Hello folks,

I was wondering if I can use "Roxio Creator" to convert a few downloaded 3D SBS files into SD DVD format for playback on my DVD player?

Also, will my HD 3D Plasma TV be able to recognise the 3DSBS format played from my DVD player?

Thanks.

3D requires a lot of detail to be effective. So the file sizes are very high. Converting it into an SD dvd will lose a lot of detail and 3D will not be impressive.

In 2D even if the rip is 700mb the tv will upscale and make it appear good but for 3D this is not so effective as our eye perceives even tiny details in the picture and hence a highly compressed rip is ineffective !!

For 3D to look good atleast it will be 6 to 8 GB and for very good pq it will be 15 to 18 GB. No alternative !!

Thanks Madhav.
I just wanted to know if what I described would actually work and even worth trying, before I buy myself a media player.

The dvd specification does not allow SBS or TnB streams encoding. Whatever you embed in it will be converted to standard 24 or 30 frames. Your only chance is to encode it in mkv format and play through suitable player.

SBS does not require special encoding. 2 frames are stored side by side in a single frame. Don't confuse it with frame sequencing. Framerate has nothing to do with sbs. Theoritically it is possible to create an SD sbs dvd but practically it will not produce impressive 3D.

I finally gave in to my curiosity and here's a brief description of my attempt:

1. Downloaded some LG 3D demo content in SBS mkv format (272MB)
2. Used a trial version of "Wondershare DVD creator" to convert the mkv to DVD format and burn that to a DVD (344 MB).
3. Played the DVD on my 5+ year old Sony DVDp and switched on SBS 3D on my GT20.

Lo and behold, for the first time on my set I was able to view real 3D - meaning that the objects actually popped out of the screen.

The PQ was not mind boggling with the demo gaming and sports content, but with the IMAX deep blue content, it was dramatically better.
The trial version of Wondershare left a very irritating watermark on the content, but it became less obvious with the IMAX videos.

I think the way to go is a HD player, but this exercise game me a good glimpse of real 3D on my set.

1. You should try to play the downloaded content through usb itself. If mkv support is an issue, for converting to xvid or divx, you can use 'Pazera Free MP4 to AVI Converter". You can download it from -

Pazera Free MP4 to AVI Converter - Convert MP4 files to MPEG or AVI - Jacek Pazera

It is fully functional programme and not a trial one and can be used to convert all formats, not only MP4..

2. DVDs are 480p576p only, whereas for the best experience, you need full HD content. The clips you have downloaded must be in full HD. Pazera will help in preserving the resolution, or even upscaling.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the hint. I indeed downloaded the content in HD(720p) format, but conversion to DVD format basically would have downgraded the resolution. Well! I cannot use the USB for playback as support for video formats is almost non-existent on all *20 models.

convert the file into a compatible format with a video conversion software. i think *20 model does support avi wth xvid codec. thats good enough. just use a good conversion software, if you want an open source conversion software use format factory which supports almost all formats !!

In Pazera, in the bottom left hand side, you have to choose "Output file format/video setting". Choose, "AVI", and in video codec 'XviD 1.2.2.". In "Audio settings", choose "MP3...". Once converted, you should be in a position to play on you 20 series pana. I have 50VT20D and have not faced any issues.

One more thing, when adding files, apart from mp4 formats, you can select any other video format also for conversion. Just in "files of type" , select "all video files".

Thanks very much. I was always skeptical of the video format support on my GT20.
This works like a charm and I could notice that the videos were understandably far better in PQ than in DVD format :)
