So I understand that if u wash and clean the record's, most pops and crackles will reduce.

However I get a lot of pops and crackles even on some new records that are in near mint condition.

Which leads me to think that maybe it's time I change my cartridge and stylus on the 242. With the help of Navin Sinha, I will manage to get a shure cart and stylus.

Question is, will changing the cart and stylus help in anyway reduce the pop's? I heard his friends 242 and that sounded really wonderful.

Thanks and regards.

Hi

Welcome to another never ending debate or shall I say endless brainstorming voyage.

Please don't take my opening words in a pessimist manner, the whole experience of vinyl listening has a substantial chapter devoted to elimination of pops and ticks or shall I say controlling too much of that. Because even pops and ticks add to the flavor.

Big words apart.

There's a few reasons which I've found out the hard way :

1. Dirty record.

2. Stored static on record or a charged record.

3. Worn stylus.

4. Bad pressing.

A dirty record can be cleaned, how to do that is explained and debated a lot on forum already.

Stored static or charge can be removed by washing the record.

A worn stylus can be changed.

And a bad pressing can be either tolerated or replaced.

In India dust is everywhere.
Records that used to play flawlessly in the UK are now always a bit crackly no matter how much you wash them

Thanks guys, so let's say we take off the dust equation out from this.

Can a bad/worn out stylus or cartridge cause pops and crackles?

The pressings are all pretty ok....have checked Indian uk and Japanese pressings.

Nearly forgot... There is the lil problem of the track skipping too, what could that be because of? Again, a bad vinyl?

The skipping is due to anyone or multiple reasons below,

1. The Turntable may be placed on a poor level surface.
2. Incorrect Anti-skating setting. This should be same value of Stylus tracking force.
3. Bad Stylus.
4. Damaged Record.

to add one more,

5. Clogged (dirty) stylus

Good thanks I'll keep all this in mind, thanks selvin, I think I'll change the cartridge and stylus first.... Then let's see further. Navin sahab will need ur help soon!

Insufficient tracking force can also lead to skipping. Damaged groove too could cause skip.

Some phono preamps are better than others at suppressing ticks, pops and clicks.

Celester 340

If possible take your LPS and play on another forum member table. That will let you know if the problem is with the records or the table.

a few pops and crackles can sound like music as well, depending on your age :)

the older generation (like me) feel nostalgic when they hear pops and crackles, the newer generation find them irritating :)

Is the distorted sound, unclear high frequency, one channel more loud due to bad record or worn out stylus?
After the Vim bath pops and cracks are reduced to some extended to can hear on start of play

The 242 does not have an antiskate switch...so how does one set that up? Also insufficient tracking force, how can I check that?

The player is on a flat balanced surface,I have confirmed that with a bubble scale.

Thanks.

I've seen most recent Marantz stereo amps suppress clicks and pops pretty well. Also some vintage amp from 70s and 80s has very good phono stage like Pioneer SA9900.
Cartridge wise M97xe from Shure is a good choice though it is tough to mount and align. I use a Nagaoka 110 (yellow) in my SL1210 and it is very silent and sounds better than a CD player:)
This cart also comes pre mounted on universal headshells so no hassle of alignment.
Hope this helps
