EX710 vs EX500

LOL... I love it when you call it Panel Lottery.

My whole experience (or should I call it an ordeal) over the last 2 months seems to be re-affirming the fact that I should just suck it up and wait it out till next year. Can't wait for CES 2011 in Jan.

It may be worth the wait, since next year you may see samsung/sony lcd tvs with a new tech called Bluephase lcd similar to sharp UV2A tech, but specs are only better.
Then there is the AMVA5 with a claimed contrast of 15k:1 vs current SPVA,AMVA @ 5k:1 .

Google tvs may appear in india as well.

Hello Satan Hello Adder
I am glad about this discussion and new information that pops out
I confess that i am more inclined to sony as brand and i can understand the difference between panel lottery and different panels on different sizes.
but it is also disappointing to know that sony has chosen to go for AMVA panel in some high mid end models as Ex710
you all have mentioned how can samsung c65x models can have noticeable different picture qualities due to different panels used. so that is not good indication for sony

away from this issue i really need an Advice
Sony in my country has made quite large discounts on Ex500 model
so 40 EX500 now costs around 50550.5 in indian currency so i am really now considering to buy it in few days.so need ur advice

known the previously mentioned problems in EX700 as non uniformity and excess lighting in corners,etc........, i would like to know What advantages that LED Ex710 can offer more than Ex500 and what are disadvantages for EX500 ? so plz help
or in other words
what can edge LED offer more than CCFL in general and what can they offer considering these 2 models Ex710 and EX500
Thanks

hey anabil, just buy the EX500. EX710 has nothing better to offer - buy it only if you have no better avenues to spend your money.

Leaving all the technicalities aside, just helping you make a decision and my honest opinion.

Main advantage the Edge led offer is lower power consumption and higher brightness, the tvs dynamic contrast can work a bit more aggressive(dimming or brightning),but its always recommenced to disable them.
Apart from that LED are slimmer,in future Edge led lcds will be cheaper then CCFL.

Finally got the chance to check out the EX710 today. Unfortuantely, it wasn't an experience that led me to bring it home. I'll go on record and say that the EX710 is more hype than substance.

While I liked the slim profile and the minimalistic design along with the matte finish screen, the quality of the picture definitely leaves more to be desired. I won't say it's bad, but I wouldn't say it's good either. Everything looked quite washed out and colors are far from being vibrant. I saw the display at a Sony Center and believe it or not, the lesser models looked much better. I checked and double checked the settings and they were all on the exact same settings with the ambient sensor off.

I definitely wouldn't recommend this model, not for the premium price they are charging for it. You can easily make do with any of the other models (lower end models), unless of course you are looking for a 50+ inch tele.

Aside from my brother and I, there were 2 other potential customers who, like me, had their minds made up to buy the EX710, till they actually saw the EX710. Sufficed to say, they left the store quite disappointed as well.

At this point I'm left with just one other option, the Samsung 55C6900. It's an impressive display with only one problem... a big, big price tag.

For me, it's either that, or wait till CES 2011.

I registered here just to add my vote to this observation. I had compared the specs online between Samsung LED TVs (non-3D) and Sony LED TVs (non-3D) and had decided on the Sony EX710 because it seemed to be at a good price for a 40" TV.

I went to Croma (Eva Mall, Bangalore) in the evening and they had just got a new display piece for the EX710. One of the demo videos looked a little noisy and I asked the salesman to play the same video on a Samsung Series 6 40" C6200VR (another one from my shortlist). After he played the same video on both the TVs (one by one, not side by side) and looking at the comparison *twice* between these two TVs from the same distance and angle (respectively), I just came out with the feeling that the EX710 is not good enough.

The Samsung (more expensive than the Sony) looked a lot better, although the salesman was pushing the Sony saying that the picture processing (what Sony calls BE3) is much better. He did show one difference - the Sony had brighter pictures while the Samsung was a bit darker. But compared to the noise in the overall image on the Sony, I'd say Samsung really is a lot better!
The salesman also said that the default factory settings in the Sony had a high sharpness level and that reducing the sharpness would make it better. Of course, I know sharpness makes the picture noisier and wanted him to prove that it would be better. But he just couldn't figure out how to change the sharpness (and he even went into the XMB menu looking for it)!!! So I had to leave it at that and decided not to get the EX710.

Also, if you look at the news and review sites (International or US), you'll see that the EX range from Sony is called the "budget" range. It's not anywhere close to high end or even mid-high-end (whatever that is).

Comparing only Samsung Series 6 LED and Sony EX710, I'd definitely say the Samsung is *the* better choice.

so away from higher brightness advantage on edge led (that will be turned off as u recommended) and if i don't care much about power consumption i will only buy 40 inch, do you think that 40 Ex500 is the best option right now considering all factors and problems mentioned in some lcd (excluding local dimming and 200 hz sony or samsung or 3d since it it out of my range)

this 2 questions may be the most important and last questions b4 buying
-plz tell me in points what to look for while examining the model in the shop b4 getting it to home and what to check for
- we only have the KLV ex 500 not the KDL ex 500 does that have any effect on the reviews that praises the KDL Ex500

Thanks

Wells thats correct if you don't care much about the said advantages of edge led, they you can go for a regular CCFL based lcd.

Well check for backlight bleed aka clouding/flashlighting.
Check for deal pixels by playing colors Red,green, blue, black and white in full screen.
KLV only lacks a digital tuner and some video format support via USB.

so the Ex500 is the best available choice in the LCD with 100 hz option?right?

when i check hours viewed on the Lcd, how many hours are considered ok?
and is that way is the right one i > 5 > Volume+ > Power?

about backlight bleed, how can i detect it, do i have to increase one of the settings to certain number?
and about playing with colors red, green what to look for, i always see pictures posted but i don't understand what they are looking for.
so plz help me detailing these question because i want to make all these checks rapidly as sales people won't leave much time nor patience to try for more than 5 min i think

thanks so much

EX500 is one of the 2 options the other is the samsung series 6.

Well it was the i ,5 vol+ ,power i haven't checked that out lately on 2010,2009 sets.
There shouldn't be any backlight bleed at max backlight settings,if there is some backlight bleed it depends on your own preference whether its acceptable or severe.

Look for odd pixels when displaying R,G,B,W,B colors.

Many thanks Adder for your helpful answers.
is there anything else u would like to inform me to prevent any cheats from the salesman?

Adder
1)what is the acceptable no of hours viewed on lcd b4 buying it?
2)i have been offered today the 2009 model of samsung b650, what do you think in comparison with the Ex 500 in terms of picture quality, and viewing angle( washed out pictures) etc...?
3)what is the expected life for samsung b650 and the Ex500
by the way i think u own ex500 but i don't remember, will this model stay for how many years i don't intend to buy LCD today and then buy again and so on
so what is the expected life of LCD?

1Well i haven't checked the service menus of tvs lately,so not sure whether Sony resets the timers, since in 2007,2008 one used to see 3 digit hrs in a brand new sealed tvs.
Best thing to do is see for scratches ,finger prints, remote.

2 B650 is quite old,so avoid that .The life expectancy depends on lot of factors in theory it should be good for atleast 5 years .In todays world 10years are the max.

3 no i don't own a EX500.the EX500 will be replaced in feb or by april

Hello all
decided on the 40 Ex500 and brought it home last thursday.
the picture is good for sd channels i haven't tried any hd yet.
i need help in adjusting picture and audio settings
adder what are the general lines considering picture settings
i know some settings depend on my preference.
when i turn off the sensor the screen become more bright and colours are more vivid but my eyes are not comfortable when it is off
i wasn't able to find any problem like blusih or tint that i have always heard.
and last point considering the yellow color i wasn't satisfied about it , is it possible to make some adjusting in order to make the yellow yellow not yellow orange
thanks

congrats on your purchase :)

If your eyes are uncomfortable turn on the light sensor.your eyes are important more then the eye poping picture.
Turn off setting like mpeg noise reduction and noise reduction.advanced contrast enhancer, clear white, black corrector.
look at the thread in AVSforums and a quote from HDTVtest uk reviewer

"People asking for settings: approximate ones are in the shots above. Be sure to have Gamma at +1, Sharpness at 0, Film Mode on Auto2, and all the other video processing features off."

Hello Adder
Thanks
something happended yesterday while i was playing with set and i am worried about it.
I was playing with the wide and normal wide and at the same time i transfered from one channel to another channel using the receiver remote and suddeny around 30 cm Long* 50 cm Width in square shape appeared in the right middle part of the 40 inch screen
This square shape that appeared is like (when u are doing auto tuning or searching using the uhf mode) this shhhhhhhhhhhh appeared in some colors not in white and black.
i was worried and tried to change the wide to normal mode and again to wided but it doesn't disappear , i turned off the TV using its remote and turned it on again but this square still exits ,
changed the channel from the remote receiver but it still exists
finally i turned off the receiver from its remote and turned it on again and this square disappeared.
so is what happened is something that i should return the TV or it is just due to something related to the receiver
Thanks so much.

will u please tell me where the R,G,B,w,b is found and how can i access it

Well i can't understand what exactly the issue is ,but since its solved with turning off the receiver it isn't a issue with the tv.

Hi Adder again
i will try to explain and thanks for trying to help
u know the horizonatal lines that go up and down as semicircles when u are playing with the equalizer visulazation in ur winamp or any media player( or when u are searching for a Tv chanel in an old crt).
that is what appeared on a nearly the middle of the LCD screen.
it is not picture in picture mode.
suddenly around 6 to 9 horizontal lines appeared and they covered nearly 40cm^2.
and these lines appeared in mixture of colors red and white or something like that, while the rest of the screen shows normally the channel that the receiver is on
i turned off the tv by remote and again on and it hasn't disappeared and i switched to another channel but hasn't disappeared
but when i turned off the receiver by remote and again on it disappeared and everything returned normal
i want to know what that could be, it is only 1 week and i am worried that this error(or whatever it is called) could happen later after the 14 day money back guarrantee .
i don't want to go in troubles
i wished i could have thought to get a camera shot for it but i hope that u can understand or imagine what i am trying to explain , i am sure you have seen it before
thanks

well since its resolved only by switching off the reciever the fault is in the receiver.
try disconnecting the receiver video output connections and then in the tvs try switching to wide mode to normal or vice versa and see if the problem remains.
