EXT two TB

have ou tried formatting utility... esp swis knife..

it uses "brute force" to format everything .pls tryand tell about results

take out the full parts from the enclosure and check the serial number and google. Most probably it should be a 20/40gb IDE hdd or a pendrive at the bottom of the pcb with a fake hdd motor

Kaushik,

Still hoping that it is atleast a 500GB HDD. Commiserations if it is indeed a 20gb HDD :(

I would like to thank Kaushik for taking this gamble, carrying out this experiment & being open about his findings/experience & sharing it with all of us FM's

This shows that Kaushik truly is here to help fellow FM's, which i wholeheartedly appreciate & so should the other FM's as he is constantly finding new stuff DIY or otherwise for our benefit.

:clapping:

PS: When ever you are in mumbai, do PM - I owe you atleast a couple of

Why don't you send a detailed letter to Western Digital including the seller info. Let the track down this guy.

Just a suggestion...

The site has refund policy as it is mentioned. You can give it a try...

I doubt they refund a product that has been opened up.

I thought people in India were the experts in such frauds but the chinese surely take the cake for going to thru such lengths :)

Sorry to come back late .. there was no net there .
I am very happy to hear atleast some people expressed that this thread is beneficial ...

although the gamble was for personal gain, even it is a loss but the loss will be minimal if it helps others .

what i think

Q. why the guys are selling such hdds they may be some working ones with slow speed

I can file a refund or demand 70% money back(I am lazy to ship it back) in case is is of no use or give him my next move that I will reveal the details all over the internet.

Dont worry the I opened the piece very carefully , and there are no sign that the seller can guess that .

Lets take it in a positive way.. and cut the fluff .
Some one suggested letter to WD , WD will entire china to catch a seller and demand refund , guys be practical!

My plan is if it 500Gb I will make it to work , else refund etc etc.Tonight I will put it on office laptop and may be by sat afternoon I can decide..

Why people are so scared to take a unknown route .. lets add little spice to our decisions I m not feeling sad for this buy..

IMO there would be no point in sending it back for a refund. This would be
additional waste of money. These guys are just frauds, in case if you send
it back, they will repack it and sell it to some one else.

Well put Kaushik. It was indeed a risk worth taking looking at the escalating HDD prices. Personally I too would be tempted to do the same keeping in mind that I am fast running out of HD space :)

All in all your gamble helped not olny those of us who showed interest in purchasing the product but also to others who were curious to know the outcome.

Like others put in shipping it back would be a waste of money. Retaining it would save someone else from being duped by the same piece of HDD. I am sure the seller may not get intimidated by your threat of revealing his fraud to all on the net as he has been shamelessly and fearlessly been selling his products online but having said that It is important that the seller is given a scare and others are warned of his dealings. Just wait for your refund and then do the needful.

may be i will do some to lift off scam sites .

dhgate like ebay clones, can be checked with these steps :)

one thing strange to me was that there were no search results /real discussion on the chinese HDDs .

Not even appreciation threads!! So i will be happy to reveal the truth..
Personally i am very happy with china sellers so far along,8audio,hifidiy, etc all sold useful stuff ... VFM.

This was something that struck me too. There is always a first and the bright side is that current and future members will benefit from this post :)

ok so far in a summary
*Bought a 2tb marked HDD from dhgate.com at approx4.5k
*HDD says not formatted ,out of curiosity opened it
*there is a real HDD indeed inside
*format taking long time so attached to a laptop where there is 3hour+ backup
sothat power cuts dont terminate format

so the factory format was not done it seems
*current status : old laptop format took 1hour for 1%,new laptop formatting is fast in 15min 1%like progress i can see, may be tomorrow afternoon some progress we will see!
