F5 Amplifier Kit Available (India Only)

Rajesh

I have to question your assumption( I could be wrong on this)-but won't a good heatsink handle the heat dissipation adequately? Why should that not take care of whether it is operating in Chennai or Timbuktu?

Suds?

George

heat sinks will dissipate the heat
that wont stop your Room from getting hot
And if the room isint air conditioned that would be ouch!!

i think rajesh is getting at this fact

this may sound insane, but why can't one thinks of keeping amp out of the room as a solution? If you can keep the compressor of your split AC out, you can keep the amp out as well :)

Only that you would need a long connector between pre and power, and very long speaker cables.

Hi George,

Thanks for the question. Between Chennai & Timbuktu, what matters I guess would be the ambient temperature. The higher the temperature, the lesser would be the heat dissipation. You would then have to also factor in 'Wind Chill Factor" (made famous by news channels but very valid) i.e. must have the means to move the air around the heatsink (by using fan for ex)

Ofcourse, the room temperature would be unbearable is a foregone conclusion.

Hope I'm correct here. We would be missing Cranky here for sure.:D

BTW, I've ordered the Class D amp after wire transfer of the funds; waiting for delivery.

Your said it magma.

Hmm. quite radical thought anm; but I think it would be impractical. You can't keep your amp out perpetually like an a/c external unit. It will go kaput in weeks if not earlier.

Guys Captrajesh is absolutely right. The heat generated by a class a amp. regardless of the heat disspation method built into the amp. is substantial and will contibute to heating the room air - I am not too sure about this specific amp kit though - and will definitely add to the cooling bills. What I am doing, though it is a slightly more expensive option, is to have both a class a setup and a class a/ab or class d setup and switch out one for the other based on the season. Sometimes in summer I miss the warmth of the tube sound but the warmth outside keeps me going:ohyeah:
Cheers

Guys

I HAVE a Class A amp-it's a 9wpc valve amp which hardly runs hot-now I may be comparing apples and oranges, but that was the basis of my comment. I may be wrong ( in which case I will stand corrected) but would like Suds to also chip in on this.

George

PS Rajesh, look forward to your trip to Bangalore to check it out!

I envy you sidvee. Hope to catch up when I visit Hyd in 3rd week of May. BTW, there are a few forum members in Hyd as well. cha_indian, afj, gopi whom I've interacted with and some more names I can see.

Why don't you guys do a Hyd HFV meet? Lets put Hyd on Indian audiophile map. Wot say guys?

Bad timing Capt. I am headed over to North America for a much deserved vacation with my family and will be gone for 6 weeks starting May 18th. Maybe we can catch up next time. We do have a small gathering that meets every qtr. or so, next time will be in my place probably in July.
Cheers

Enclosures / Cabinets for First Watt and other amps.

I can get these Retex Series 180 rack mount enclosures imported..

2U / 3U Type should be suitable for First Watt Amplifiers..
can some one check the height against the height for toroid transformer ..
from spec pdf.

Enclosure Spec and Image.

hi - I have been watching this thread for a long time and I am interested. My question is - how safe would it be against electric shocks etc.

Suds-the Retex units look neat.

Gobble-any idea about pricing for a 2U unit?

anm-if the soldering is done correctly I dont think you need to worry about high voltages..

Looking at the F5 unit, it appears as if some customizing will be needed to have the heat sinks not sticking out on the sides of the front plate. Im seriously considering building a couple of these, and will post info on Miracle's quote for a toroidal transformer ( 400VA, 24 V secondaries) as soon as they respond to my email.

Let me check with them, I exchanged a couple of emails with them last week.
