Thanks a lot to all the experts for their valuable suggestions, finally got a Marantz PM6004 in Singapore. Bought from Alpha audio for 440SGD.

Now have to purchase an interconnect cable to connect to BDP and start auditions for new set of speakers. May be upgrade to CDP after few months.

Pls further advice

1. Need to buy interconnects immediately, suggest a decent one max 1.5-2k.
2. Speakers either BS or FS for my bedroom of size 16x14. Following are in mind Wharfdale 10.2
Wharfdale 10.4 or 10.5
KEF Q300

TIA

If Wharfedales are in considerations, you should also consider DNM bookshelves. They're much cheaper and at least to my ears sound better. But thw Wharfedales are not bad to begin with.

I dont want to offend any one, and I am sure there are some excellent suggestions already, but I feel that before suggesting a speaker one needs to know what sort of music the person mostly listens to, and what sort of sound signature he likes. That can considerably narrow down the choices.
As I myself felt in my auditions, there are a lot of very good speakers, but different speakers do different things well, and have different sound signatures. So one should be clear about his/her music choices before choosing speakers.

Just my two cents. Again apologies if I offended anyone.

@ OP: I have personally felt that wharfedale has a very warm sound, meaning it is more towards the bass, mid bass and mids, but is less detailed than speakers in its price range. KEF q300 on the other hand, though have not yet auditioned and am planning to, is said to be detailed but brighter, meaning that the higher frequencies come off sharper than wharfedale.
Two more speakers I will suggest you audition are Mordaunt Short Aviano 6(FS) or Aviano 2(BS). They have a good low end response, more so for Aviano 6 and I felt they were pretty detailed.

Go and listen, and tell us what you liked about which speakers. Carry your own amp and music. After you post back on your impressions, people can give better suggestions based on your preference. Because ultimately its your speaker, and you have to like it most.

krishpiscean, congratulations on the new Marantz! May it serve your ears well and long! :)

My interest in this thread is the "getting gear from abroad" part with respect to customs duty! A friend of mine is coming over from the US and he is ok to bring the Emotiva UPA-2 amp. I am wondering about how to manage customs here!

So would like to know your situation, after you get back from SG. Btw, I stay in Hyd. If you do too, can I check out your gear sometime?

happy hunting for the speakers. Cheers.

Raghuram,

Thanks. Fortunately the custom guys are not part of HFV and r ignorant of the good brands, so chances of getting caught are less . But if goods are well advertised brands like Sony, Sammy etc u r chances of escape are minimal. I was safe today with marantz though its well within 25k.

U can check my gear anytime, currently i have only video set up and stereo is in process, may take time to get right speakers.

Congrats on the buy......

I auditioned (all bookshelves) - Monitor, Magnet, Polk, before settling for the Kef Q300. They pair well with Marantz.

I agree to what Jsl says. The DNM "High end" speakers(that is the model name) are at least as good as, if not better than, wharfs 10.2 but no brand value. I liked both the speakers.
Definitely worth consideration.
For interconnect i would say use MX. Will give good results at much lower cost.

Hi Krish. Resurrecting your old thread - did u buy speakers? Which ones and how is the pairing with the Marantz?
Thanks. Have a good one.

I haven't finalized on any speakers...currently managing with a borrowed set of 685s from a neighbour uncle :D. Still have 15 days of the borrowed time, so vl run for auditions after that.

Well I bought the KEF Q300 bookshelves along with the Marantz PM6004. Flet that the highs on the KEFs were muted initially, with awesome mids and great bass. Burning in to the 4th day, the tweeters are opening up.... great stuff!

Did the marantz really cost that little only $440 sing dollars in singapore.

Can get good deals in SG and requires good bargaining. My uncle who stays in SG has long history with couple of shops, so he gets very good discounts. If you buy more stuff in a shop, u can easily get 15% off on each which was the case for my amp and other av stuff. The catch is u wud be easily caught by the customs with all such heavy equipments but again u can bargain for all the stuff with customs with out flat 20-30% customs duty :D

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
