Finally purchased Marantz PM6004...chase for speakers begins

As Blasto correctly said... the 6004 is not adequate enough for the 685. So the 684 would be out of the question. They would definitely need a lot more power.
Again more watts does not necessarily mean louder.
Infact higher wattage amps will you give you better control at lower volumes

I don't understand why you guys don't think the 6004 can drive the 685s! Of course they can! You guys don't know your **** from your elbow!

As Sidhu says its like sending a boy to striptease bar, he can only enter:D:D
I personally checked b&w need lot of power than fs of other popular brands. Rotel is perfect sync though.

Hey Craigo !!!

I don't think you have been on this forum long enough.

However since did bring up this point.

let me start off by saying that

I own the 685's and I have tried them with the PM6004 a while ago for a very brief time. - Anyway the result was crappy. (( so advise given on the basis of real experience not through my rear end ))

Another FM ( who's name I shall not mention - but you can do a search on the forum)
also owned the 685's and took the leap and bought the PM6004..... End result he could not live with it. he sold off his 2 days old amp as well as the 685. as he realized they needed a lot more power and better amplification to make them sing/ live up to its potential.
He had initially auditioned the 685's with Rotel Pre + Power

Anyway
Getting down to brass tax - I now drive the 685's with the 2 Rotel Power Amps bridged as Monoblocks 180watts per channel + Arcam Pre (temp)
If the PM6004 was a suitable mate for the 685, I would have saved a ton of money and time and lived happily ever after.

So now I would rather put the same question back to you

Cause I / other FM's / Blasto are talking through experience - and not what we read on some Review site.

Hi

i heard B&W of sidve, he was driving them with Belcanto pre&Power amp combo

it was very nice sound...

Regards

Tanoj

Agree with Flash, PM6004 cannot drive B&W's. Heck, it cannot drive most of the speakers I heard. I think it is most suitable for Wharfedales I guess.

krishpiscean,

I think I posted following info. in a different thread.

PSB and NAD are owned by same parent company.

ROTEL and B&W are owned by same parent company.

Denon, Marantz and Boston Acoustics are owned by the same parent company.

You know why they partner well with each other.

As mentioned by other FM, the best method is to audition at your place with your favourite music.

It seems that you guys know more than the experts at What Hi-Fi that awarded the 6004 5 stars. I'm currently running the 6004 with KEF R100s and am very happy with the result. If the 6004 is wrong, I don't want to be right. Also tried the 685s and although the 6004 is more than capable of powering them, they are dinosaurs compared to the R100s.

What hifi is a joke nowadays. They have some staple words which they recycle across all reviews. There are few review sites dependable anymore. Their forum is still more or less good though.

B&W are current hungry. Marantz budget pm series is current limited. Wattage is not everything. Go check out it's transformer rating. It's good enough for kef bookshelves maybe, those speakers don't need a lot of juice to start opening up. But not for speakers like Epos, B&W and similar.

Craigo,

FYI:

The professional reviews for any equip. will have measurements not stars.

For example:

Can PM 7004 drive MA Rx6... (again 100 WPA channel speakers) vs PM 7004 (70wpa)...

from my limited experience and learnings from my mistakes, it is always better to take amp at the higher range of speaker channel WPA. Unless it is bedroom setup with BS, FS certainly need more power. Few exceptions would be matching pairs like marantz with wharfedale, rotel with B&Ws as they have sync up very well. Also marantz are too good for BS but i doubt how good they are for FS.

As your are going to SG, get a better amp than marantz as you pair it with FS. Rotel/exposure/arcam etc

FYI: I find the measuring devices on either side of their head that What Hi-Fi use to be the best. Anyway, I don't have the time or energy to explain further why the What Hi-Fi experts know their stuff. We are all entitled to an opinion, and the enjoyment of the music is the important thing. For now, I'm going to enjoy the measuring devices attached to my head.

That's the best way to go. You don't need any Mags.
