for those looking at rega P1 vs project debut III

This was the part 2 I guess. I listened to the music through IEMs. To me, the Rega (Grey one) sounded trifle forward and brighter sounding to the Project (Red one) which was comparatively laid back and had rounded off highs. The difference is very subtle though. Hope I'm right in my perception.

Hi Captain,

Yup the rega sounded a bit brighter to me too.

The tonearm and cart makes quite a bit of difference, though in this case I haven't heard the Rega so cannot really comment. Both are relatively on par, with different sound signatures that might have different attractions depending on your tastes. Both retail at around 20 to 25k I think.

Regards

Thanks for the link Steve. You're a mind-reader. The Pro-ject sounds muffled to me, compared to the Rega which is more open sounding.

I find the Rega too bright for my taste. Project sounds better especially with the higher frequencies.

Co-incidentally I was just wondering about whether to buy a budget turntable at all or not. Will see if this helps either way. Probably deserves its own thread, but if somebody would like to suggest their own opinion, would be nice. ( regarding budget turntables vs similar-range CDPs )

Hi Alcy,

Are you choosing between budget and higher end turntables or between budget and similarly priced cd players? The choice will partly depend upon whether you have or are in a position to build up a collection of vinyl. It will be a difficult, costly and time-consuming process unless you can lay your hands on an existing collection.

Once you have a collection of records, you will have a very enjoyable time cleaning and caring for them and listening to the sheer quality and variety of the pressings. Their musical quality, on a well set up record playing system, is simply unsurpassed. Do go for a turntable if you can.

Regards.

+1 on that

Absolutely there my brothers. While I sensed slightly more depth and better imaging from the Debut 3, the highs and even a bit of upper midrange from the P1 were definitely brighter and more defined, to the point where I found it distracting. On some records it could and likely would be annoying. There was a slightly greater degree of warmth from the Debut 3, and more low-end presence. I would definitely coose the D3 over the Rega. Hope this helps somebody. Best Regards to all fellow audiophiles, Will

I have a Rega P 1 which initially sounded bright. I promptly changed the RCA cable without disturbing the original internal RCA connection by cutting out the cable from under the player without opening up the TT. Let me tell you, the TT was completely transformed and sounded much better than many higher priced TTs including Pro-ject. I even adviced some Forum Members who had similar problem. They swear by Rega P1 now. It works.

Any pictures of what you did, I mean the cable mod on R P1?

Most of the entry level Tts come with very high capacitance RCA cables, replace them with low capacitance cables you will hear the difference.I alwas replace Tts cable with low capacitance Video component cables. You need to be careful while soldering as they are very stiff and thick to solder.I am currently using Amazon Basics Video Components cables in my TT Amazon.com: AmazonBasics 6 feet 3RCA Component Video Cable: Electronics

Please let us know, which RCA cable and Connector you used in place of the stock one ?

Vipin.

I use high grade professional low noise microphone cable of MX. It has very good shielding. Regarding changing the original RCA cable, I cut the original cable just below the hinges so that it will not be seen.
