@manav: Great going on the 401 (I presume). Where are you sending for retip? Ruby cantilever? Or Sapphire? Plain ole Aluminium? Boron? Some other exotica? What is the preferred stylus geometry for an SPU?

I am gonna stick with the aluminum tip with an elliptical diamond, as that is what the Ortofon SPU's were tipped with originally.... wanna keep it as close to original spec as possible.

News from sound smiths... My Clearaudio Concerto came back nicely re-tipped... but the Ortofon SPU seems to be damaged beyond repair.... so have asked them to send it back....

i guess i will put the Lyra on the SME 3012 S2 now...

Pick one up Malvai. The SPU is worth it. The sheer authority and weight I think is something no other cart will ever match.

Hi guys, time to revive this looooong neglected thread. The past month or two, I actually eked out some time to finish the plinth build for my 401. And also attach the arm wands.... For a week or two I played around with my Koetsu Onyx and yesterday I pulled out my Brand new Denon 103 pro.

The Koetsu is a very warm cartridge and very lush. Its kinda sweet and juicy like an alphonso! The Denon 103 pro is still burning in, with just about 3-4 hours of play... but even fresh out, one can make out the legendary signature of this cart... also what one can make out, straight up, is that this is far more extended in the HF than the regular 103....

More on this, with pictures, soon!

The 103 pro has done 10+ hours over the last 5-6 days... The sound has opened out considerably... the HF has improved considerably and overall the sound has opened out big time!

This is a GREAT cartridge and already competes favourably with carts in the $1500-2000 price range.

I can only wonder what would happen if it got a wood body or an aluminium body.... Plus a fineline stylus! It, I have a hunch, will KILL $5k carts!

The 103 pro is getting better by the hour! Awesome! I now know why the 103 in its various avatars has been a top seller through the decades...
