Got bored with a 50" plasma. What to do?

Try adjusting your sitting position (closer/farther) according to the quality of a movie.

I sit in a revolving chair with wheels and move it to appropriate distance. I did some experiments and have arrived at optimal positions for BD, DVD, HD-DTH and SD. Sitting too close with lower quality formats results in disappointment as well as eye strain. I also move the chair horizontally depending on whether others are also watching - I sit at a corner if they are and at the center if they aren't.

Some more experiments to get the best out of your setup - tweak picture settings according to ambient light etc...

Yes Hemant, Unfortunately they are not available any more. Thats why I asked to get used one. You get few ads on net selling these items in used market. As a brand new they used to cost multiple times than normal Tvs.

Frankly this big TVs had its issues of weight and impracticality. And price around 7-8 years back was around 1-2 lacks,or more ...without 1080 p resolution and HDMI..See what you can get in 2 lacks ..in fact you can have a 50 ich plasma for 50-60 K!
There was an ad 34 Inch Philips (34PW9819 )for 8 K( Nego) , I gave the details for enthu members and no one bothered to check! So big CRT had its days which are gone for good!

( Desclaimer:
1) Mods if you feel the thread inappropriate or commercially motivated please delete it!
2) I was noway related to seller....

4) It is used and ODD size - so buy at your own risk!)

Get hold of 'those' movies. It would pep you up ..... :licklips::ohyeah:
Unlimited supply from some members here ..... put in a request.

+1 to that. But I wonder how OP will react to close-up shots, that too on a 50 inch screen:D

I agree with you. They were heavy and somewhat impractical and too much costly. And may be thats the reason they did not survive. But the PQ quality they offered was just unbeatable. I have seen them working with 720p component & dolby digital (There was hardly HD content available that time)

kapvin, is the quality of movies in moviemart good for BD content? And moreover do they give you original BDs or copied versions?

originals.

it's probably the same BDs that you buy in your music store.. with different license Agreement

i've not noticed any difference between the these and any retail BDs that you buy.

as far as scratches and playablity is concerned, I've only had 1 hiccup so far (in about 1.5 years) when the borrowed bd gto stuck on my htpc. however it played fine on my bd-s370.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I am now beginning to think that there is a still long way for Full HD in India. When i bought this TV back in july there was discovery and national geographic hd. I use tata-sky hd for tv viewing. Its still the same. The content is pathetic. Then if you need something else you have to hunt for it eg. get a BD or download it. Downloading 4gb to 12 gb will take some time so again plan for it. Now before you rent or download search that the movie was shot in 1:66-1:85-1 so then you wont get black bars. If its your lucky day you have a winner or else wonder how would this movie be like on a philips 21:9. Now i say forget it and i start watching DVD's and admire the pixels on my tv. Okay enough of the pixels i will download/rent a sitcom or a cartoon. OMG i have black bars at the side too but there is a trick. I could zoom and watch. This i never did in my entire life but never mind lets zoom and watch the cartoon.

The reason i bought 50" plasma was for PQ and Full HD content but after 7 months i dont feel i have even got 5% return from it. I have a 29" CRT which i used prior to this. Life was very easy back then. Even a VCD would look gr8. Really bored by this 50".

Cheers

^^When buying a FHD display, it has to be on the basis of the amount of 1080p/720p content u have or that u can acquire in the near future.I cannot believe u were depending on HD providers to switch to FHD transmission on all channels within just a few months of introduction of the service.I feel like u are hating the TV just to....uhm,well, hate it.IMHO,these are all silly reasons that u have posted regarding black bars in movies and pixelation from low quality content on a huge screen. There was a reason the director shot a movie in a particular aspect ratio, thats how he want the audience to experience his piece of work-nothing at fault there.

Frankly, u didnt demo the set before purchase according to ur usage, and as a result, the blame for this let down lies on ur shoulders alone mate.Feed quality, Get quality is what large displays are all about,i would say.Lower the quality, poorer the reproduction-though this can be compensated with a viewing distance of >8 feet very much.

Just my 2 cents

@siddh

I beleive the MRP of philips cinema 21:9 is apprx 4.5 lacks. Is it ready available in India and I wonder are you willing to spend that much moeny to eliminate black bars? Not sure how small normal 4:3 will look on it which is still 90% content of channels ?

kapvin,
One last query, are the BDs region free?

You may want to invest in good home theater unless you already have one.

It's lot of fun(sometimes) tuning HT and identifying sweet spot where you get best experience.
You can definitely watch all your collection again.

if you are selling at a throwaway price.. I'll happily pick it up.. or I can exchange my non full-hd lg lcd.. (which looks great with SD)

:-)

Try some yoga positions on this revolving chair with wheels. Try shirshashan and see how the tv looks. Another idea is to ask someone to rotate your chair at 24 rpm...and lo ! you have a reverse projector

So now come to think of it, it is the picture quality of the program and the general programming itself which is making me bored.
You can improve the picture quality by adding a upscaler like DVDO Edge. I was in same situation when I had bought LG42LH90. The SD content was so disaapointing, that I was thinking of returning it. The DVDs looked great as the source was Oppo 983H. Then I bought DVDO edge after lot of thinking. I got it from 20north. Now the SD content (Source is Sun HD) looks much better and HD content looks as good as what I get from Pioneer BD-51FD. DVDO edge do wonders when converting 1080i content to 1080p.(Some users reviewd it in US & the reason I bought). If you try shopyourworld or other merchants it is much cheaper now. I think DVDO edge is not overkill but a usefull add on as most of the content we watch is SD.

Guys thanks for the offers for my tv, Only problem is it is going to my cousins house if i sell it. He has been after it from day one. But if i do sell it outside do check me here for my offer after mods approve it.

Cheers.

Can we know the price paid of DVDO edge in INR?

1080i->1080p improvement is very feasible. I have doubts about SD improvements. By the time DTH box prepares it's final frame, all the work is already done. nothing can be done to recover the details lost due to compression. Is there any technology explanation for this improvement?
