Great musicians of the 20th century

All of us would be having areas of darkness, whole genres of music,we know nothing about.I will try to list some of mine:mad:
In my 35 years of listening to music,I've heard Paranoid,War Pigs,Back In Black,In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida....can't think of any other 'heavy metal' track that I know.
Teen Spirit,Lithium,Come As You Are.That's all the Grunge I've ever heard.
I have never,ever,heard a single track by Gun's & Roses,Aerosmith,Ozzy Osbourne,Judas Priest,Iron Maiden.
I am familiar with 1 Radiohead track called Creep.
I have heard 2 U2's,Beautiful Day and One(with Mary Blige)
I have heard less than 10 Michael Jackson songs.2 Maddona's,2 Sting's,1 Bolton,1 Wham,1 Shakira,No Britney Spears,Celine Dion (Was it Celine who sang the Titanic track? Not sure.)
I am not familiar with any track of Prince,Eminem or Tupac Shakur.Have never heard Rap.
I came to know that there is a band?solo?musician called Manowar from this thread.Ditto Dead Confedrate and Nuno Buttercourt.
My country music listening experience would be less than 50.
My ignorance may seem incredible to people who have grown up on this music.Dire Straits/Making Movies/1980 was a cut-off point with me.Any music later than that, which I have heard, was by accident and not by any effort on my part.
The point is,that there is so much of music out there that we are unaware of.Music that we can discover and debate about on this thread, peacefully :)

AAAAHHHH!!! - the incomparable pablo honey! - genius:) -

and, to imagine, i do not have the cd yet - unforgivable!

get off your sorry butt, suri, and get the cd.
Suri, Same here! I have the entire thing on mp3, but thats about it.

Go on, this is a wonderful thread and every post opens the door to the possibility of some good music that I have not heard before.
Ditto for the discussions regarding the music.

Abso-freakin-loutely!

One can't say that Classical is better, or jazz, blues, Indian classical, or hip hop....

Good music transcends man-made genres.... touches souls.... the only good music is that touches the souls... lifts you up from the mundane, transports you to a better place...

music can move the soul, help firm up the mind and move the body to action...

it can also calm the soul, soothe the mind and relax the body....

It can also make you sing out loud... make you dance with careless abandon....

hence... there is a kind of music for every emotion.... even dance music ain't bad, if it touches your soul appropriately....

well, that's my take...

Interestingly, old fogie that I am, I can still on many an occasion enjoy a good rock ballad. I guess the romantic in me wants to stay young

I couldn't have said it any better. :)

wanted to know what it is that Michael Lee would not do.

I'll never lie to you and that's a fact.

But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, oh no, no way.

But I'll never stop dreaming of you,
But I won't do that.
No I won't do that.
[Girl]
After awhile you'll forget everything.
It was a brief interlude
And a midsummer night's fling,
And you'll see that it's time to move on.

[Boy]
I won't do that. I won't do that.

[Girl}
I know the territory, I've been around,
It'll all turn to dust and will all fall down,
Sooner or later, you'll be screwing around.

[Boy]
I won't do that. No, I won't do that.

hi ssf - these are the things that meat loaf would not do - but obviously, he is besotted by the (idea of) this unattainable girl - and obviously does not know her first-hand (live-in girlfriend/married).

if he knew her first-hand, such stupid romantic notions would be replaced by one of these two-

1. respect and trust - and a safe distance will be maintained

2. hatred - with proximity guaranteed during violent fights!!!

i heard manowar when i was at school...now i feel this kind of gothic rock (is it called that??) was a a very WASP (by the way there was an eponymous band too) phenomenon .. popular music that tried to shake off the Black (jazz, blues,r&b) influence and hearkened back to , for want of a better term, i will call the gothic roots....the patrons of this music too were overwhelmingly white...recently I heard Blind Guardian (Night At The Opera)..kind of felt like Manowar II....
technically these bands are very accomplished..but i somehow feel they lack the emotional energy of the blues (though most of their compositions are highly energetic..)..
but that's me..someone who prefers the guitar of T Bone Walker over the pyrotechnics Satriani or Vai or for that matter that unpronounceable Swede ....anyway this is just my two paise....

Manowar is a band:)
Nuno Bettencourt: was the lead guitarist of Extreme. Most people know Extreme by the popular song "More Than Words". This might give many the impression that Bettencourt is more of an acoustic guitarist. A very wrong impression. Nuno is famous all over the guitaring world for his sheer speed and technical wizardry. You want to see what Bettencourt is truly capable of listen to the solo of "Play with Me". (Extreme in some of their songs have a very noticeable Queen-ish sound. This is one of those songs. But I don't see Brian May doing this solo..... sorry fanboys. Sad but true!!!)

Watch it to believe it

i think about the same time that Bettencourt was regaling us with his riffs (his painted fingers running up and down the fretboard)..there was another band called Tesla..they were good...was attracted to them for their unplugged cover of the Dead classic Truckin...
anyway for some good old fashioned heavy metal..Motley Crue was always there..(Jailhouse rock, girls girls girls etc..)

mr big..didn't they do a very popular cover of cat stevens?? somehow these names bring a flood of memories..ugly kid joe (i hate everything about you), cinderella ( band members dressed in drags..influenced perhaps by KISS (whose acronym was very adolescently deciphered as KINGS IN SATANS SERVICE), poison (every rose has a thorn or some thing like that), def leppard (drummer with one arm) of course randy rhoads and blizzard of ozz with osbourne (bark at the moon) etc etc...i had friends who would do these acts to death...anyway those were the days...

But you know how we fool ourselves into thinking that we can fool our partners.

I told my wife that Meatloaf would do anything for love, except stop playing Rock/listening to rock music.

And she says, 'Finish your breakfast, it's getting late for work !!!'

Sunil
