Hi,

Now a days we talk a lot abt HD and FULL HD TV.

I have TATA SKY which offers only about 5-6 HD channels. Then is it worth to purchase full HD expensive sets for watching only few HD channels?

I am also tempted to purchase full HD tv rather than HD or SD.

Whats view of other members?

initially we started with only 1 HD channel and now the number is growing every gradually which is making the need of a F HD tv more sensible. also soon we wont be seeing anymore dvd's as BD becomes more freely available at a competetive price.
this is a whole new era of higher resolution.

you can always go ahead and get a HD ready tv if watching TV is the only purpose.
however if you plan to watch HD movies on the same i would suggest to go for a F HD tv to be future proof.

another thing is if you plan to buy a 32in or less and the viewing distance is more you can always opt for a HD ready tv as at that size you wont find diffrence in the quality.
the diffrence in HD ready and F HD becomes more visible at bigger sizes.

after all it will be your call as the size needs to be decided by you and if the wallet permits. however F HD is the way to go to be on a safer side and enjoy the growing number of HD channels. eventually we will see more number of channels in HD.

HI.

Thx for good advice. I would go ahead with Full HD .

Is any one using 42 inch plasma for bedroom (not living room) at viewing distance of around 7.5-8 feet? I am confused--I feel it will be too big screen. But I want to have preferably plasma (42inch) over LED (32inch), here screen size is an issue.
Kindly help.

If you already have a HD ready TV and you are in no urgent need to replace it, stay with it.

If you are in the market looking for a new set, go for full HD if the size exceeds 42 inch.

If you are particularly interested in sports HDs, NG/Discovery kind, then a full HD plasma is ideal.

What ever the options are, now that you invested in HD box, try to enjoy it maximum.

It is wrong to say full HD sets are expensive. Full HD LCDs starts from 32-35K and some do have reasonably good pic quality, IMO.

Some terms -
HD resolutions - 720p, 1080i and 1080p (and potentially above res also qualify to be called HD)
Full HD - 1080p
HDTV - a tv that has any of the above resolutions AND have a digital/HD tuner built in.
HD-Ready TV - a TV/display that has any of the above resolution BUT does not have digital/HD tuner built in.
EDTV - a digital display having resolution 480p.

hi,

Does it make difference in PQ if we watch SD content on non HD (SD)TV AND on HD AND full HD TV at a same time?
This is imp. b'coz most of TV channels are SD only.

Just last point about screen size and bedroom that I mentioned above---kindly help.

sd content looks best on sd tv(crt), as the size increases it become worse.(especially dth because of the heavy compression)

general consensus is SD content looks comparatively better on HDTV than full HD

42" at 8feet should be fine, i watch 50" from 12 ft.

i too have TSHD(and reliance) and i have put the hd channels as favourite and watch them only, completely stopped watching SD channels except for the news, (we dont have any hd news channels in india.those 6 hd channels are enough for me

Nothing beats Sd content on sdtv....they r made for each other!... & i watch a 51"FHD @ 7ft, but with only with justified hd/fhd content for the glorious in house cinema effect.
I for the matter nearly left watching cable sd/dth tv on the big one...i have left it for my new 32"fhd lcd to do its job....only hd/fhd cinema & doc magic on the bigscreen!

It makes more sense to purchase a FullHD since the cost difference isn't so high. The number of HD channels will increase in coming years. Upgrading then will be costlier. Good quality (Full) HDTVs will upscale SD as well in a decent manner, so you won't miss anything you'll see in a SDTV.

Going by above definition of HD ready TV, which is true as per wikipedia too, there is no difference on a HD TV and a HD Ready TV in a situation where the tuner capabilities of the TV are not required at all which is true in India's context in most of the cases when DTH set top box is used to view HD TV contents. Even where the TV's tuner is put to work instead of STB's, HD content is hardly available in India which can be viewed through TV tuner only.
In that case what is fun shelling extra bucks for a full HD TV when we are not going to use it's tuner and the same quality if resolution is available in a HD ready TV.

vktyagi,

Totally agree with you. The difference between HDTV and HD Ready is the built in tuner. As for most of the services, a Set top box is needed which renders the TV as just a HD ready display. Why shell out the bucks? But most TV's are available with the tuner anyways.

I think when TV display cos say Full HD, they are not talking about tuner. Currently, 1080p is considered Full HD. Just another term created by Marketing folks at these tv companies. Wonder what term will they coin when the 4k displays become mainstream.

In the HDTVs the tuners are a useless appendage ( in India). No terrestrial digital or HD broadcast available in India. But on DTH and C band Satellites, HD channels are available in 1080i format. To enjoy it in its full clarity you require a full HD TV. So is the case if you are planning to buy Blue ray players or download 1080p / 1080i contents from the internet. So if you are planning to buy a TV of more than 42 inch, full HD TV is the way to go. Otherwise a full HD TV is a waste of money.

one guideline where one can benefit between 720p vs 1080p. If seating distance is less than 2x screen width, go for 1080p set. You absolutely need it. For more than 2x seating, you may or may not see any difference between 720p vs 1080p.

Thanks to Manoj, I finally got to know why HD TVs in India are called HD Ready (as I used to compare them with good SDTVs which said "AV Stereo" and "NTSC Ready" - That also made them a good quality monitor capable of "displaying" those source, but didn't had a tuner with that facility).

However even the "Full HD TVs" sold in India are similar in that aspect as they don't have a digital or HD/Full HD Tuner! So both HD Ready and Full HD TVs in India are sold with only one basic difference - Panel Resolution!

Now talking of HD and Full HD TVs, few bits from me:

Number of pixels may not matter much in DTH scenario (especially on TS HD platform!) as they compress the content heavily even if it is in Full HD Interlaced resolution. Watching lesser compressed 720p or 1080i content on a good HD ready TV might give you BETTER results than watching the same content on a Full HD TV which do not have as good picture processor or panel quality as another HD Ready TV.

Hence, unless you watch very high quality Blurays or use the TV as a computer monitor or play true 1080p games, you may never notice quality improvements on a Full HD TV especially below 42" size.

Can some one try to receive DD Direct+ signals on a HDTV from US having ATSC or other Digital tuner? I am curious to know if it can work as a FTA receiver.

The US tvs have ATSC tuners. I think the FTA and dishes use DVB standard. In any case, you still need set top boxes with any of the satellite reception (even the old big dish antenna's) because the signal cannot be directly decoded by TVs.

It is true. The terrestrial frequency range and satellite tuner ranges are different. Hence the terrestrial tuner cannot be used to receive satellite signals. VIDEOCON has some sets equipped with satellite tuners. I am not sure it is a general purpose tuner or customized for videocon D2H DTH service.
