Hi everybody,
Whenever I google about audio systems, I always end up reading discussions from HFV, so I thought I might as well be a member and request for suggestions.

I am planning to buy a Sonodyne SiA 310 amp and assemble a pair of bookshelf speakers. I am really constrained on budget (10K for speakers), hence thinking of buying a good pair of speaker cabinets and vfm drivers. With time I will purchase better drivers.

I stay in Bombay and I have been to Lamington Road but I have no clue about which shops one can go to, what are decent vfm drivers (5.5") etc. It would be great if any of you could give me any information regarding this.

Thanks in advance,
Ramanuj.

Welcome to HFV ramanuj.

Dont look DIY as option for cheap speakers. Generally DIY is time consuming and sometimes exceeds the budget. Most of the DIY in first attempt may not produce satisfactory result. When DIY projects are executed properly, they are sure bang for the bucks. Step into DIY if you have the passion for that rather than for budget constraint.

Rs.10000/- is a descent budget in which you can get some good pre-owned speakers.

Once again welcome to HFV.

Thank you everybody for your responses.

I went to Lamington road yesterday, heard demo of a couple of speakers and amps. I listened to the DNM AV 499, but somehow I felt that the power of these amps was not very impressive. At a late stage I want to get tower speakers I am not sure if the amp can drive them. the specs for the amp are-
Power: 20W RMS per channel
Input Impedance: 47K

I was wondering if any of you have used AV 2020A which has the specs -
Outputs:Speaker Outputs for front left & fornt right channels - 20 Watt RMS Per Channel @ 8 ohms
line Output + Subwoofer out ( to Connect an Active Subwoofer ).

I also did a demo of Panda Audio, the amp looked like DNM AV 499 but the speakers that were connected were a set of big bookshelf speakers. The speakers (@4950 a set) seemed really good value for money. However, it seemed to lack the depth of bass. I listened to songs like - Come away with me (Norah Jones), Ma Rewa (Indian Ocean) and the song Shyam (from Aisha).

So with all this put together I am kind of thinking about the Sonodyne SiA 310 with the Panda Audio speakers, later I can add a sub woofer for more bass. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on Panda Audio speakers.

The specs for these speakers are -

Recommended Use Main/ Effect Channel
Low Frequency 20 cm woofer
High Frequency 1 inch Dome Tweeter
Input Power(Maximum/ Nominal) 100 W/ 50 W
Frequency Range 45 Hz to 20 K Hz
Sensitivity 90 dB
Impedence 8 ohms

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Thanks,
Ramanuj.

Thanks Spirovious, I got in touch with a Mayank (got his number from Jeetubhai), I will probably visit their store today and try think about giving DIY speakers a try.

corElement my budget for the amp is about 10 - 12K and another 10K for the speakers. My current room size is about 15'X10', but in Bombay if you don't own a place the room size changes frequently:sad:. I like to listen to rock, country and Indian mainstream film music, I am looking for something which is good for non electronic musical instruments. Btw am not sure if this is the correct answer for the sound quality question.

Thanks again,
Ramanuj.
