Help! 40" or 46" LCD? (Pics of the room included)

Looks like your bedroom.

You can sit as close as 1.5 times the screen's diagonal measurement. Work it out this way. Multiply the screen size by 1.5 to arrive at optimal viewing distance.

1.5 x 40" = 60" / 12 = 5 ft.
1.5 x 46" = 69" / 12 = 5.75 ft.

Again, viewing distance is a matter of individual taste. But for SD viewing do not sit too close unless you want to degrade your eyes. For HD do not sit too far unless you don't want to enjoy what HD has to offer.

Have you narrowed down on models for purchase? Share your experiences.

Sorry for the late reply, there was an electricity failure. Yes, I have hand picked some models -

1. Sony KLV-40EX400
2. Sony KLV-40V550A/B
3. Sony KLV-40EX500
4. Sony KLV-46EX400
5. Sony KLV-46V550A

Do you believe 46" would be too large for the room?

I think 46" would be overkill. 40" would be good enough. But if you happen to have a BIG bank balance then nothing like more real screen estate...

Yes, agree that 46" looks a bit too much for your room size.

I would suggest the Sony KLV-40EX500. It has received a lot of positive reviews. I have seen one at Croma and PQ was good. Also depends on your watching patterns (SD, HD, games) and how picky you are about blacks, motion, etc. Having said that you cannot go very wrong with this Sony.

What price are you buying?

Gosh, there was a terrible thunder storm last night and there was electricity failure from right then until now. Thankfully power has resumed and I'll be able to watch the IPL finals tonight.

Well, I'm willing to pay whatever is required until it don't exceed Rs. 90-95K. BTW, I have Tata Sky Plus. Do you think SD from it will be kinda good to watch on a 40" Sony LCD?

Picture from Tata Sky+ will be good but not excellent. You will see a difference in quality only when DTH servies go HD (like Sun HD).

Sony will handle SD well. Other choices are Samsung 40B650 and Philips 40PFL9704. If you can find a Philips and fit your budget then it's the best thing around.

Go to different dealers, demo the pieces and pick what you like. I would any day go for the Philips if I had the money :licklips:

All the best.

As for my room size, I'd say it requires a 2 Ton AC. It's quite big actually. But the ultimate thing is the viewing distance. I'll be viewing it from my bed. You believe 46" would be an overkill? One more question. Tata Sky + offers SD in optimized for 4:3 ratio CRT TV's. There is however an option to opt for 16:9 ratio in the Set Top Box. However I don't think it'll be that good on 16:9 LCD sets. It might appear stretched. What do you say?

I have made my recommendations. Rest upto your budget, eyes and bedroom.

I am purchasing a 50" 2010 Plasma. Will post my views in another post.

Bye now!

If the set top box really offers a 16:9 option then why would it appear stretched? 4:3 picture on a 16:9 screen would appear stretched.

As for your room size, even 40" would appear humongous. There is no hard and fast rule, but the general consensus appears to be that 8 feet is the ideal viewing distance for 32" TV. I understand you are going to be watching mostly from your bed but imagine if you had some friends over and had to watch from the foot of the bed. You will surely be sending your guests home with a big migraine. Having said that, watching high definition would be a pleasure though.

The viewing distance in my living room is around the same as yours and I have a 46 inch LCD. Personally I think its about the right size for my living room. End of the day it comes down to your preferences. You can probably try out both 40 & 46 inches from the same distance and decide.

You think 40" won't be good enough?

All said and done, I think it's better to rather opt for 50" Plasma, if one really needs an HDTV of at least 46". The advantages of Plasma over LCD technology is something we all know. It's true that Plasma has it's disadvantages as well, but barring one issue, rest are not that big. They weight more, consumes much more power than LCD (I think this point is a big issue), and happens to have a little burn in problems. Now tell me why would anyone want to pause a frame and keep it like that for more than an hour, specially when you know that Plasma TV's have this burn in problem? Only a simpleton will do it.

BTW, there's this one 50" Plasma model of Panasonic which has got a review of being extraordinary - TH-P50V10D (Rs. 149,900)

Here's the link to it's Cnet UK review - Panasonic Viera V10 (TX-P58V10) Full Review, Television Reviews on CNET UK

Cnet review also mentions "Testing conducted on 2009 Panasonic plasma TVs, similar to this one, has revealed that black-level performance has become noticeably less impressive within what is typically the first year of ownership". Agreed no one is going to pause a frame for an hour but what about channel logos (eg: Ten Sports, Star Sports, Sony Max) that are going to be displayed at the same area for the entire time that you watch that particular channel???
