Hello guys.

I want valuable information on how to build my home theater . my budget is 1lac and this does not include TV.

My preference is Movies and music at 50% each.

What information are you looking for: speaker placement, treatements, projector choice, A/V receiver, or...?

hi sanjay,

i am basically looking for speakers and A/V receivers and i will be using it watch movies as well for listening to music on 50:50 basis.

hi sanjay,

You should be looking at brands like Yamaha, Marantz, Denon & Onkyo for A/V receiver and for speakers there are many brands like wharfedale, polk audio, KEF,Klipsch, Boston Acoustics, Paradigm, Energy, Magnat, Tannoy etc.

If your preference is 50:50 for music and movie, I would suggest you to look for Yamaha or marantz. In Yamaha your options would be RXV573 or RXV673.

How this product Onkyo tx-Nr818, can it server my purpose?
The Onkyo TX-NR818 is probably the greatest value in receivers right now (value = bang for the buck), until the Denon AVR-X4000 shows up later this year. The 818 includes the latest and best room correction technology from Audyssey (MultEQxt32). Plus it can process up to 9.1 channels (7.1 + 2 heights), so you're covered in case you want to expand your system in the future.

BTW, what are the dimensions of your room? Is it open (archways, open floor plan) or closed (doors, windows).

Since you also would listen to music, I would go with Marantz / Denon. Onkyo is a bit on the brighter side which works well for movies. Marantz would suit better for music and movies. Best would be to demo and then decide.

Very good product in my opinion.....Itz been a month since i bough it.....

Excellent Video processor (Upscaling to 1080p), good for listening to music, very good for movies, tons of connectivity (8 HDMI inputs), Pre-Outs...More importantly, it can expose your sound material if it is of mediocore quality.....

BTW i see your budget as 1 Lakh...If you are looking for Onkyo TX NR 818, it will blow your full budget...It retails for Approx 90K in India.... Are you planning to get it outside India ?

In addition to other speakers brands suggested by other Forum members, consider Sonodyne Sonus range....

Hi bhaskar I have recently purchased a home theatre after auditioning most of the famous brands like dali, paradigm, wharfedale, monitor audio, tannoy,Klipsch.
1) My journey of auditioning started with klipsch dealer at cinebels lajpat nagar delhi. I auditioned the klipsch reference series rf62. I needed a system both for music and movies so a balanced speaker is what I was lukin for, now before auditioning the klipsch I have read that klipsch are highly recommended for movies but they are not good for music and to my surprise it came true as the dealer was interested in letting me judge the speaker on the basis of movies as he showed me three four clips of blu ray discs but was not that enthusiast in giving me a music demo and hence I got my answer.
Dealer rating 6/10
Demo rating :- very good for movies but not that good for music
Overall :- Not value for money
Flrstanding :- rf 62 for rs 76000
denon avr 2113 :-45000

2) My next visit was at bass n treble at ghitorni delhi auditioning wharfedale diamond 10.7 with denon avr 2113 & 1713. The dealer there was such a gem. He was very patient, adjusted everything according to my need.
I started the demo listening mitwa from lagaan with only floorstanding in the scenario and I must say i was amazed with the low frequency response(bass) of the speakers. After the song I auditioned hotel california in a 5.1 setup and i must say i was blown away with the quality of the diamond 10.7 setup.

Dealer Rating :- 10/10
Demo Rating :- 9/10
Overall :- Great value for money
Front 10.7 Floorstander :- 64000 + discount
Rear diamond 10.1 :- 18000
Sub :- SW150 :- 25000

3) Next in the list was paradigm monitor 7 series. The exp. with the dealer was not that good. In short.
Paradigm monitor 9 :- very good performance , vocals was very clear, lacks low frequency if compares to wharfedale. price 66000 + discount
Overall
Dealer rating 2/10
demo rating:- 7/10
Good speakers but if u are considering to buy the rest of the speakers of matching series then forget about it as it will not fit your budget
5.1 Setup:- 140000 without receiver

4)Last destination :- Top Gizmos Noida U.P.
Started with dali zensor 7 floorstander and it was good but still my mind was stucked at the wharfedale only. After much discussion with the dealer he convinced me to audition the dali ikon 6 speakers which were a higher end of the dali and we started the demo with the taal movie song "mere paas hai tu" sung by hariharan and I must say the performance of the dali took me away with them. The vocals were crystal clear ,bass very tight not at all boomy, mids were excellent and it touched my heart instantaneously.
Overall
Dealer Rating :- 9/10
Demo Rating :- 10/10
Price for front floorstander :- 96000 + discount
At first my budget was 150000 with receiver but after auditioning dali I had to raise my budget as i cudn't go for any other speaker so I purchased them and in the end very happy with what i have.
Tips :- Do audition the speakers & let your ears be the best judge
Play same set of songs on all the different brands you audition as only then u will be able to figure out the difference.
If your budget is tight then I will suggest you to go for
Denon AVR Receiver 1713 :- 30000 after discount
Front Floorstander Wharfedale Diamond 10.7 :- 58000-60000.
Sub :- Diamond SW 150 :25000
Rear :- Diamond 10.DFS :- 12000
As of now if u r seriously lukin for a quality than go with this system or
You can make a 2 channel system with dali ikon 6 floorstander pair with denon avr 2113 and can later on add the other speakers as well.

If you plan to buy 818 from outside, try to get it from Kuwait/Dubai....Approx 45K there, http://www.xcite.com/

I don't own an Ipod/Iphone, but per the specification it is compatible thru the front USB port...(Direct Digital connection)

In Comparion with RXV 673, 818 is a step ahead

@hemant_22engg. Thanks a lot for the detailed information. Information about the speakers are very valuable and it has made my decision easier in buying speakers.
At the same time i want to know which AVR's did u experience and whats your take on those.

Dear bhaskar I had decided to go for the denon receivers prior to my speaker purchase as I think u just can't beat the audyssey setup in denon and marantz receivers. One more advice is don't go for overpriced receiver u shud limit ur budget to say 40000 and spend a good amount on buying quality speakers.
As far as my setup is concerned I have denon AVR 2113 and I just had to put the audyssey mic at my listening position and the receiver calibrated the speaker lows and highs automatically as per my room to deliver the perfect sound.

Hi Hemant,
Thanks a lot for your post and it helps many of us. I request you to share or throw some more light on the point you made on limiting the budget for AV receivers. While I wait for your inputs, here are my thoughts. Generally, most of the AV receivers which are around 40k to 50k budget don't have pre-amp pre-outs. So it might be a blocker for any future upgradation in going for power amps. Though I understand that one has to limit the budget, it is well known that the SQ depends equally on both receiver (the processing part) and the speakers. Receivers have to reproduce the analog waveforms as true as possible (close to the waveforms produced at the time of recording) and the speakers have to convert those input analog waveforms to sound waveforms as truly as possible. In a nutshell - Both receivers and speakers do play an equal role in accurate sound reproduction. Again, I must admit that I haven't done any exhaustive audtion other than listening at friend's house. So if you can share more details, that would be great.

Dear Hemanth,
it would be wonderful if you can share knowledge on @shanmune question. your insight is closest to what doubts we have as starters. Thanks again

Agree with Hemanth. Most avr get outdated quickly with newer models coming in and spending more on speakers would help in the longrun
