I have gone through many threads... now I have shortlisted 2 system...
yht 196 & sony ht iv 300..
which 1 should I buy?

Im using yht196. The bass is not so heavy... but it is an awesome system in every other way possible for that price. For movies it is 9/10... for music it is 7/10. With this avr, you can upgrade speakers later, and add an active sub too !!!
Neither, these very entry level ones are not known for performance. Instead use a PC/Laptop with a USB sound card such as the Asus Xonar U7 and connect to something like Swans M20 5.1, the performance will be better than entry level systems such as the Yamaha.
No budget is small. Yht 196 will provide good upgrade as compared to TV speakers. Later you can upgrade to better front speakers and active subwoofer when budget permits.
Else you can look at HTR 3067 plus nsp40 speaker package. It will sound better than yht 196 out of the box and has active subwoofer.

There is also a dedicated thread for yht-196. Please check that for initial setting in the AVR to get start.

People select brands like Sony, Philips,Samsung, LG so on.. however let Pine Tree State guide to you one not thus acquainted product of Yamaha-Yamaha YHT196 five.1 full vary acoustic sort. (Yes, Yamaha doesn't sell solely comfy bikes ! )

Thnq guys for ur reply... just last one thing. I have bought yht 196 but I have not installed it yet as my new room is getting constructed. I have a concern that my tv does not support ARC. I want to connect my blu ray player & HD set top box to the AVR. will I able to listen to the sound of set top box on my speakers?? or I have to do something else?? plz do reply. thnx

YHT-196 is very good for Music and Movies but it has following disadvantages.
1. No active Sub woofer.
2. 4K doesn't supported.
But Yahama has introduced another HTib with above features.
you can think of it which cost you around 32000/-
It's Yamaha YHT-1840. you can try it. specs lucrative.
One more thing YHT-196 price decreased to 23000/- in Reliance Digital considering new model arrival in the Market.
