Hey Guys,

My first post, i need your help and opinion.

Being an avid fan of movies, i am building a home theater in my basement.
The size of the room is biggish, approx, 35feet x 17feet

I am getting some king of wall pannelling done for the sound.

I need your opinion on the combination i have chosen for the setup.

This set up is for about 4 lacs, give or take.

Dali Ikon 6 (mk2) Floor standing front two speakers
Dali Ikon Vokal 2 Center speaker
Dali Fazon X4 Surround Speakers
Velodyne SPL 1200 Subwoofer (or two smaller cheaper subwoofers)
Marantz 6008 AV Reciever
Transparent Audio high end cabelling.

What do you think and what changes would you recommend if any ?

Also, if anyone has any view on this projector :)

Sony VPL HW40ES/B - SXRD projector - 3D - 1700 lumens - 1920 x 1080 - widescreen - HD 1080p

Thanks for your help guys, i have saved this money for the last 4 years, and now my plan is coming to fruitiong, i just dont want to make it any mistakes.

Would love to hear from you guys :licklips:

With 35 feet in hand I would suggest to split the room in to two with one as your HT and the other as your pantry/gaming/BAR or just a casual room. The design should be like you can also view your HT from there, but basically it should act as more like a break out area .....

That actually sounds like a good idea, but it increases costs, which I have saved up. But will investigate. Thank you :)

I would audition more (IMHO)... not that Dali is bad.

For starters I'd check out the GoldenEar speakers (both towers and sats) though with your budget you could get towers.

KEF (Q series floorstanders for fronts) is another option.

Also, is it purely a setup for movies or will it be used for playing music too? Purely movies I'd audition sats and THX certified speakers and not the mainstream floorstanders which are more "musical" in nature. I have listened to home theaters with a pure satellite speakers + sub setup vs. regular speakers like say MA RX series + sub and the floorstanders were an overkill or simply did not add anything to the movie experience.

And yes I would recommend keeping the home theater and the music system separate... hard to get the best value from a single system though online reviews suggest the GoldenEar Triton series are seriously good though a tad overpriced in India.

If home theater is the only usage of the speaker i guess these guys make some speakers which are suited specially for home theater needs, it might even cost much lesser the actual budget you had in mind.

You dont necessarily have to fill it up immediately, idea is to leave room. and then later gradually add things up. Over a period of time you will have nice HT with a decent breakout area

Thanks for your opinion, love hearing other peoples point of view..

I did call up the dealer of goldenear and it'll be a bit out of my budget, with floor standers cost 1.3, surround x4 would cost 80, centre about 45, bass for 70, marantz for 75, and cabelling for about 40. So a total of 4.6. So about 60 above my budget.

Dali fits in my budget and when I heard them, they were fantastic. But of course I'm open to all options, haven't done my research on KEF yet though.

Again, thanks for your help. :)

Such is the plan, can you tell me about projector screens please, it's a dark room, so I need one that's low gain but good clarity. I haven't decided on the projector yet. Will import from the US.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I had almost decided to get the multiple award willing Dali Ikon home cinema package which was 2.25 lacs at the time. Then I heard about a company called MK Sound and the rest as they say is history.

One listen to MK Sound was enough to conclude that it was leagues ahead of any HT system I had heard. Finally I went for it. I was way too expensive compared to the Dali set but every paisa worth the money. If you would like to hear the MK Sound speaker system send me a PM.

For the kind of space you have, I'd strongly recommend two subs rather than one. You'd just get a lot more better feel with two subs.

The budget you have is very good. But please don't even think about Transparent Audio high end cabling. You will run out of your budget on cables alone ;)

First of all I'd say be sure to decide what do you want. Is this budget only for audio part or does it include video equipment as well? If the budget is inclusive of video, set half of it aside for the video part. Cant say about you, but most people who visit a private theater, their first impression is made by the display device. If you go for a proper display device for such a large space, set aside 2 lacs for that. Your overall joy would be a lot more this way, rather than if you get a Rs 50k TV and spend the rest on audio part.

Finally, a little friendly wallet alert: Rs 4 lac might seem a lot when you start with such a quest. But once you get going the money just goes up in the air, without a trace. So be cautious while making your wishlist.

My HT system uses a Marantz AV 7705 and a homebuilt 5 channel power amp using Hypex UcD Class D modules. I'm sure there are a lot of other options out there, like Anthem which is rated highly.

Since you are building from scratch, and your room is so big, you are a perfect candidate to have Dolby Atmos. The new AVR's with Atmos will be available in few months. Get an AVR with good room correction as Audyssey XT32 so that's one more plus.

At this moment, you need to plan your seating layout, screen size and speaker layout. Next is the room treatments. People often overlook room treatments but I can tell you from my experience - treated room is in another league as far audio is concerned. Room can make or break the sound. You would get big, tangible results with room treatments than spending on fancy amps or receivers.

Speakers - The M&K speakers suggested above is a very good choice. Also is Hsu. Those Hsu speakers are very good with music too. I was very surprised at how this $150 speaker delivers. Although not sure how it will perform if you listen to it from 15 ft plus. Your best bet is to audition all these speakers.

About subwoofers - having multiple subs is not for loudness but for smooth out response and get better seat to seat consistency. You can go diy route here, that will save you lot of money and give very good response. I know diy is looked down at HFV but many people are moving towards diy because what it offers. Check DIY Subs and Speakers section of AVS and you will get an idea.

One last advice - plan, plan and plan. If something is out of budget, then do it in stages. Audio/video is not buy once and done. You will be ready for upgrades in couple of years. Its very easy to get carried away and do costly mistakes of rebuy. ;)

Well I went the DIY way and ordered the screen material locally from a dealer in delhi. Got the frame made locally as well from a carpenter (providing him all the instructions). The gain value is 1.2 for my screen which is pretty acceptable.

What your budget for the projector?
