Hi, could anybody provide some idea how the sound of home theater speakers would compare against the Logitech Z906 5.1 surround sound speakers? I plan to hook it up with a blue-ray player, hence I would like to know whether it would fare better than HT systems of common brands (like Sony/Samsung/LG) in the price range of INR 25-30k. 30k is my upper limit and getting beyond it (even by a K ) is not an option

I plan to use the system equally for movies and music.

I hope it is the right place for this query but if it is not, please point me to the right forum.

Thanks in advance.

OP is looking for a BD player too within the budget. Yes, Onkyo HTIB and a BDP is possible within your budget depending on what models are available in your city.

Cheers!

My requirement is to have BD player and 5.1 surround sound to fit in 30K. Z906 + BD player comes in that range. Hence I wanted to know how this setup might sound compared to other BD-Home theatres in this price range. (By 'BD Home theaters' I mean HTiB-s which come with bundled BD player or a HTiB and a separate BD player ...)

Onkyo HTIB would give you much more connectivity option because of its receiver, making life much easier in todays digital world IMO but sound wise it would not be an upgrade to a Z906. And as for other BD-Home Theatres (LG/Phillips/Samsung) you are considering, personally I would have stayed away from them.

Hi thebanik, thanks for the response. The Z906 supposedly has 3 digital in-s (2 optical and 1 digital coaxial), and three analog (a six channel, an RCA and a 3.5 mm) which should be pretty much ...

Very bad idea. Once the player goes the entire 5.1 system is of no use. I've seen enough people invest in such 5.1 systems with inbuilt DVD players from the likes of Sony, Philips, etc. Once the DVD player developed some problems the entire system was of no use.

I have an Onkyo HTIB and though it does not come with an inbuilt player its still the best because I use it for TV (with Tata Sky HD), DVDs and movies with WDTV... and even occasional gaming.

I suggest please dont waste ur money on the GLORIFIED DVD/BR PLAYER set from lg/sony/pana...anything.....
buy onkyo 3400/3500.or denon 1312...or yam 196/296........
u wont be able connect even ur stb with the former types(they dont have hdmi input)...and cant enjoy 5.1 sound.....keep away from them...

Imagine the mess of cables, and then imagine a proper reciever with 3 HDMI Ins and 1 HDMI out. Which means, your Set-Top box, PC, Gaming Console can all connect to the reciever, which in turn will be connected to your display. So all of your digital devices can share the same speakers and display.

But ofcourse till the time you do not use a proper HT setup you may not be able to understand the benefits.

My stb is a tata sky plus (SD) which has only RCA out. Laptop has HDMI out but I don't plan to play video out of it too often; but I would be playing out a lot of audio out of it. For that I would use the headphone jack (and that's the only audio out it has). I don't own a gaming console and unlikely to use one ... Hence I believe the Z906 connectivity pretty much serves my purpose ...

Basically this is what I am trying to understand. What are the benefits? Better sound? Better connectivity? Upgradability? All in the price point of less than 30K.

suppose u have a basic system like a tv...a tatasky hd...a dvd/BR player with hdmi out...

now u want that u play a hd channel and ur display is on tv and the 5.1 dolby digital sound plays in ur speakers....

u play a original dvd disk in ur dvd player and want ur display in tv and 5.1 sound in ur speakers

just imagine how you will connect ur systems if you dont have a system having multiple hdmi input..and one hdmi output....

u can only enjoy the video thru hdmi into ur tv/pj and still enjoy the 5.1 proper dolby sound..in case only and only if u play a dvd disk in that particuler ht system u are interested now....

but that is not the particuler case we always play...we play hd channel/our laptop/from other player/games with hd sound/...etc etc...

all entry systems from onkyo/denon/hk/yam/pioneer have this feuture but the sony/lg/sammy they dont have.....
this was the connectivity part only.there are many other feutures..if you follow the specs....u will easily understand..

better upgradibility---definitly...think u buy a blu ray player and play origional br disk with dts-hd sound track....then...or u buy a game plyer/or u want to hook it up with ur hdmi pc/laptop

better sound----yes of course---onkyo/denons/yam/pioneer are the dedicated av reciever makers certified by dolby lab...

if you still think u will do without hdmi...then u can go for a non hdmi model of denon/onkyo/yam...at a very very cheap rate(discontinued model if lucky..u can get)..with 6 different channels analouge in....then connect them from dvd player analouge 6 channels out...and use composite for video...

at 30k range u blindly buy denon 1312...onkyo 3500/3400..or yam 296..acording to ur ears.all they are good systems..sound diffrently to diiferent ears..

edit--I just checked logitech z906.it nowhere stands with a dedicated av reviever and speaker package...also it is inferior than market avilable sony/pana ht packages.......if u want to play from pc only(pink, green and blue jack) and intend for pc speakers..then u can buy 5.1 creative/intex speskers at a much much cheaper rate.........why it is priced at above 31k:mad::mad:......where denon 1312 is also around 30k..32k..

before I was explaining to u why u go for this and not go for that.now I am begging u not to buy this logitech model at 30k!!!!!!!!or u will curse urself later.......

either buy pc spesker under 7k.or buy a real reciver and speaker...under 30k I prvsly mentioded the makes and models.........
u go to any showroom and just see and touch any onkyo/denon/hk/pioneer/yam...recivers....after that if u do not fall in love....u bet...I fell in love instantly when I saw onkyo reciver backside(no pun pls) for the first time......:ohyeah:

edit--I checked ur needs..laptop audio mainly...in my opinion 2.1 creative/intex is quite enough at only like 2.5k only/mitashi 5.1 at 3.5k..which are also quite cool to connect with tatasky sd box sound cable red and white....so dont go for expensive models...but yes as I mentioned if want to be future proof and want to invest pls invest in a good system I mentioned..

Hi prosenjit, thanks for your inputs.

Please note that z906 is available for ~19k in Bangalore. (I would probably go to the retailer who claims to stock it and hear it this weekend). If I club it with a BD player worth ~10K, I get a BD + 5.1 surround sound system within 30K - which is my requirement.

I heard 3500 at a dealer's place and it sounded beautiful, but clubbing a BD player with it would jack the costs up to ~40K. Unfortunately I need to restrict myself to 30K and therefore Yam/Denon/Onk are kind of ruled out for me.

This why I was trying to pit a Z906 + BD player setup against the Sony/LG/Philips/Samsung HTiB bundles (ones that come with their own BD player or those who don't) in terms for sound quality.

The reason I choose Z906 is that it seems to be one of the very few multimedia speaker models which have digital ins, so that it could work with a BD player without an AVR sitting in between.

okay if budget is the problem u shd buy the br player at 8k u will get...sometime later.

.but just think with hurry u ruin ur future level...also buying a blu ray player not using its hdmi for audio will be a crime....if you have plan for a future br player and play original bd disk in it with hd audio like dolby tru hd/htd hd ma....u right now cancel out logitech.......

onkyo 3400 at croma 26k.......sony br plaer 380..7k...........33k total.......why worry..also emi option is therer everywhere.
go for it..

umm ... why so? I believe my bd player would decode hd audio formats to its digital out as well; or won't it
