Home theatre vs Logitech Z906

yaar 30 k is a decent budget, but investing it in z906 along with BD player is really not worthwhile, all the forum members here are trying to save you from doing a bad move which is highly appreciated and you should understand this as well...

you can also go with the Yamaha YHT 196 for about 21 k which has got some really good reviews, and a descent BD player worth Rs. 8000

umm ... why so? I believe my bd player would decode hd audio formats to its digital out as well; or won't it

Yeh, sure HD audio (DTS-HD MA, DD TrueHD) will be decoded by your bd player and will be downgraded to DD or DTS (or simply pass through the lossy part - the core) through co-axial/optical outs.

But if you have an HDMI capable receiver, like 3400/3500 you can very much enjoy the true quality of HD audio, that you will never get in mentioned logitech set.

Got it, and its a valid point. However, I wonder whether the downgrade would be bad enough to be noticeable.

u will be very upset after buying the logitech.....anyway dont know why u are so much into it when u can easily buy a good ht set and a br player well within 30k..may be 2k more.......

I think you can get an Onkyo 3400 or 3500 plus a sony/philips bdp for 30K. Sony and Philips BDPs are available for around 5K. What is your source of media? If it download contents then it is better to buy a hd media player instead of bdp. BR disks are very expensive and I'm sure you will stop buying them after a few purchase or when the fancy dies. Each disk will cost you around 800-1K minimum. I sold my bdp for the same reason. If I want one, I can always buy a player later and I'm sure prices will fall by then.

I think you should settle with Logitech Z906 for two reasons. (1) it is THX certified and (ii) you have already decided! ;)

Buddy, believe us, there are not too many options in this price range that folks on HFV will gladly recommend. Go for Onkyo 3400/3500, get a BDP for 5k and settle down in life, for now.

Don't ask why. There are many reasons. Not just versatility, the overall PERFORMANCE of Onkyo is much better than Z906, mid range is just one department I am referring to.

many members may have different idea about different model..but one thing is common everyone including me are discouraging to buy the logitech model,,,whats the part/special use/specs or performance u saw in it that u are just into it??
belive me it will a wastage of ur hard earned money........yes off course if u r just for pc use..buy cheap pc speakers at a much less price than 19k...
or at a 30k budget u can easily settle for onk/yam entry level htib and a br player under 7k easily.......

Hmm ... did gain some very useful insights from this forum :licklips: thanks everybody for educating me ...

Basically I was never planning to get into the Onkyo-Denon leagues owing to budget constraint hence trying to pit Z906 + BD against the Sony/LG/Samsung BD HTiB's. However, the impression I get is that investing on Onkyo/Denon might be more worthwhile than getting a lowly Z906. Surely, would keep that in mind.

This weekend, I went to a store to hear out the Z906, but it seemed the dealer had no demo piece of that  . Instead he played out Z623 which is a 2.1, claiming that Z906 would sound better than it(His logic - Z623 is 200 watts RMS while Z906 is 500). I played out a couple of music tracks into it. Sounded quite good, vocals and high notes like flutes were quite clear from ~12 feet in a pretty noisy place. Honestly, not as good as 3500 (however, the tracks I heard on 3500 was different, the speakers were nearer, the place was quiet, while this was a pretty noisy place ...). Didn't help me though as Z623 was not something I am looking at. And I don't believe I can get an idea of Z906 by hearing some other speaker even it is of same brand and similar specs.

Regarding my source of media - thanks for bringing this point up. Must admit that I don't plan to play a lot of BD-s with it (I might just play a couple of them just to get the wow feeling out, franky, in next 2-3 years). I am looking at something which would play audio/video from my PC, Pen drives, Hard disks, iPods, and all my VCD-s/DVD-s/Mp3-s disks. At the same time, as BD-s would become more commonplace and cheaper in next couple of years, I won't have to add another equipment as well ...

Regarding why I narrowed down Z906:
No, it is not the THX, and certainly not because I have made up my mind :licklips: I am looking into it because it has 3 digital inputs and 500 watts rms. If it has a decent clarity (which I haven't found out yet) to supplement it, I don't see why it won't fare well as a versatile 5.1 home theatre sound system in the sub 30K range.

The multimedia store guy suggested me to visit ezone to hear this thing out. Would do that and post my feedback if I get a chance ...

You may feel 3 digital inputs is enough. But remember everything is now hdmi like in bdp, hd receiver, greaphics card. Why use two cables for sound and audio when one can does it all? Most probably your pc won't have a spdif out and you need to buy an adapter. If you have a decent gpu with hdmi out, you can enjoy digital audio through it.

You meant sound and video, right! Yes, that's a very good point.
However I won't be playing out a lot of media from my laptop (as it would likely to be used by others in the house ...) but play a lot of stuff from portable hard disks, pen drives and music from ipods/mp3 players ... and also play disks (VCD's/DVD's ...)
