This post of mine might sound silly but its not that I am avoiding the DIY method :-)

Years back I aligned my Shure cartridge in my 1200MK2 following the method advised. But suppose if now I need to do it all over again what are the basic parameters I need to look at 1st and how do I proceed in the whole process to keep the stylus at 90degrees?

Pls help.

These questions are answered n number of times in the forum. It is advisable to do a forum search with related keywords to find out. You can use keywords like Protractor, Stupid etc. Meanwhile, the answer is available in detail all over internet & YouTube as well.

Since you are having a 1200, its very easy to align. Assume you've got the tone-arm alignment spot on. For the cart, you can easily download a protractor and use it for alignment. On another note, if your turntable is playing ok (as it has before), then its better to apply the old Russian saying - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Looks like the DIY fever has hit you. One very important aspect a DIYer should follow is not to experiment, fiddle or meddle with something that is working properly. More often than not, upgrades are better left in the hands of experts or experienced people. A DIYer who is not experienced may end up changing, misaligning or damaging something and it would be difficult for him/her to restore the previous settings. Turntables are not like Microsoft Windows XP, where you can just click a button and restore previous settings :)

Its not that I am trying to fiddle around with it.

But as I went through the grind 2 years back not sure how perfect it was as over the months I have become more experienced.

The Tone arm alignment I did with the antiskat and checking the equidistance between the tone arm and base all across the arc.I hope this is correct.

The critical part is cartridge alignment with a printed protractor where real precision is needed and a bit of learning as well.

Jay,

The answer is please search and not expect spoon feed. I have noticed many of your posts asking questions on basic things. Looks like you need answers to your questions fast and direct. Does not work in a forum like this.

There is enough advice given by fellow members to you already.

Cheers.

Anilva,

What is basic and elementary to you is not for me. A forum is a place to discuss, interact and get clarified. Is anywhere written that I am not allowed to ask basic and direct questions?

IMHO not looks good to discuss this same thing in so many threads and posts.
If you are new you can use search tools to get what you want, there is lot of info posted about cartridge alignment in previous threads.

Thanks
Raghu

Thanks Raghu. Trying my best to do that but at times it's a bit confusing going through the posts received from Search engine :-)

Hi Jay

you may check this thread http://www.hifivision.com/phono-turntables/47934-protractor-used-sony-ps-11-direct-drive-turntable.html

There are tools which will help you print the appropriate protractor as per your turntable specs

you can get your turntable spec like "pivot to spindel distance" overhang distance etc from vinyl engine dot com

Note : Before you begin, just download a Baerwald stupid protractor from vinyl engine and check if the null points match, if yes then i suggust do not do anything

Hope it helps

I will direct you to download the user manual for the SL1210 here: Technics SL-1210 Owners Manual, Service Manual, Schematics, Free Download | Vinyl Engine. You will have to register yourself on the site to be able to access the library. It is worth the small trouble.

Almost all the information you need are written on the pages of the manual.

Page 2 and 3 have diagrams. Page 4 onwards is explanation of how to make all necessary setups.

In general, tonearm balancing and cartridge alignment process requires the following steps:

1) balance the tonearm
2) set the counterweight (a.k.a. tracking force)
3) set the antiskate force
4) set the vertical tracking angle
5) align to inner and outer null points, and overhang

For 1), 2), 3), and 4) the said user manual gives you sufficient information.

For null and overhang adjustment: see post # 13 here:

http://www.hifivision.com/phono-tur...used-sony-ps-11-direct-drive-turntable-2.html

Do read the manual from first to last page. You will learn a lot.

Anilva,

From the time I started, and even before I started my first thread, I went through the Forum in detail. The search feature was very effective and I found most of my queries being answered in historical threads i.e. they were discussed and answered in length. These threads not only answered my questions as there was huge amount of knowledge sharing as well that I picked up.

Most forums today encourage new members to first search existing threads before starting new ones as this helps in the overall management of the forum/database.

Now, you are most welcome to ask even the most basic questions, but instead of starting a new thread, you can read through the existing threads and also post your questions on that same very thread where I am sure our FMs will be most happy to answer.

I think this is what Anil's thought and communication was.

Cheers...

This is a standard response. Everyone says the same thing that "I am unable to search". Nobody is stopping you from asking basic questions but do that in the related posts and not start new posts for every fundamental question. You have already posted few of that nature.

No I have not.
All my threads which I have started are dedicated to a seperate issue altogether.

what is this then

http://www.hifivision.com/phono-turntables/48037-whats-cnc-phonostage-all-about.html

instead of opening a new thread, you could have easily clarified on the main CNC phonostage thread.

The TITLE of the thread is loud and clear.

Reference of CNC is there in every alternate thread. So to get it clarified I started a new thread.

A suggestion - U can pin this thread for any newcomers who might have questions on CNC or else u will question the new comer again as why is he starting so many new threads.
