How Do I align the Cartridge all over again?

I hope some of us do not get so snobbish about what is essentially a public forum for discussion, debate and advice. If there is a house rule about redundant simple and basic queries, the forum moderators are well within their rights to instruct and if necessary moving or in rare cases delete the thread and warn the user. I personally hope the forum doesn't become so rigid.
The current user could have done better with a wee bit more research effort, as there is a lot of material available online, but sequentially other users could refrain from admonishing the poor chap for asking.
The broader paradigm of the site is not just being a cozy boy's club of 'experts' with their noses in the air, looking down on the 'lesser mortals', but a more beneficial purpose of encouraging and helping others in their initiation into the hi-fi world.
Frankly, I find a lot of unnecessary snobbery and an attitude of 'how dare he be so stupid...' from some members disappointing. If you don't want to help, move on, someone else might or not.....
Anyway, thanks to people who didn't judge but chose to help and better still helped and also advised the user on how to search better.

Thank you so much Sir!

Please pardon my opinion and I'm not yet fully knowledgeable about all the rules of our forum (honestly), but I feel we must not discourage someone who asks questions, however elementary these may be. Probably there's a better way to group them together or so but again, keep them coming. At work I have managed teams of different sizes, and one piece of feedback I've always received from my western customers over the years is "your Indian team members never ask questions" :)

Thank you for all the support as you have always been there answering my query how stupid it might sound.

OT, it's not personal to anybody but generic ...definitely not against OP and Reuben. I know you are nice, helpful and kind to other FM. After this post some people will pounce upon me. I will try to avoid answering all forthcoming bashing :D.

It's not about asking novice questions. But it's about where and how to ask it. These subjects are widely explored area beaten to death. Little search might help to find existing area or thread where it could be amended. That anilva and others were pointing out. And about answering questions, if you answer my question I have to thank you. But if I write 'thank you' post then it increases another useless post. Rather using button optimises database storage and avoid all useless clutter. Also it adds to credibility of person who receives it. So it boils down - if I don't know how to use forum then I should learn first. There is search rather than littering down everywhere. If this is free facility we should use it legitimate manner. If anyone want to know what I mean then try to do same thing (open individual thread for 1 question) in DIY Audio forum. He/she will realise what I mean.

We are happy to answer at one related place. Anyway I am out of space need to backtrack now.:)

This is not a comment about the OP, but takes off a little about a point that omishra raised.

Any forum like this is dependent on some total stranger answering a question (basic or complex - it doesn't matter) posed by some other total stranger, by passing on hard-earned knowledge for no other reason than a common interest in this hobby and a well-wisher mindset. It does not take much for the OP in question to at least acknowledge the reply, either by another post, or by the 'Thanks' button. What sometimes is dispiriting is that many OPs lack these basic good manners, taking it as a matter of right to be gven a reply merely because they asked a question. I've personally encountered this a few times, and I'm sure others have, and it just might wind up reducing the number of contributions on this forum. And, hey, none of us are gurus, and we all have questions of our own that need to be answered. Let's not scare away those who might otherwise contribute more.

As I said, this is not about the OP of this thread.

^^+1, we none are gurus, but learners.

Now about answering cartridge alignment. I align a cartridge first time completely using protractors etc and play using same setting unless one of following happens -
  1. I remove headshell from tonearm.
  2. I clean TT and unknowingly change balance or antiskate.
  3. In same configuration, I find distortion in previously good playing record.
Still in all above case, only horizontal level of headshell, balance weight and antiskate are only required to be done again. Not touching cartridge mounting screws unless protractor shows distraction from path.

Otherwise gently brush cleaning, or Onzow Zerodust cleaning does not matter. I never used liquid cleaning method on stylus.

Just for the sake of trivia, thought I'll mention an old trick that was used to align cartridges of the old "record players" back in the day.

One would be told to lift the tonearm manually and move it towards the center of the platter. When brought over the platter spindle, the stylus tip would need to be bang over the center point of the spindle top. Then one would have a perfectly aligned cart :)

I think with the advent of automatics and semi-automatics, the use of this method was discontinued.

Moral of the story: read the user manual of your equipment:)

To be sure, I tried searching the forum with key words like "cartridge alignment", "tonearm balancing", and the relevant results were as below (by relevance I mean it actually instructs/tells how to bdo alignment or balancing):

1) http://www.hifivision.com/phono-tur...-ps-11-direct-drive-turntable.html#post544306 - which is a "query" post. The next page has some relevance.

2) http://www.hifivision.com/phono-turntables/47454-how-identify-grove-distortion.html#post537928 - explanation of IGD and how to avoid it.

3) http://www.hifivision.com/phono-tur...d-sound-amazing-while-rest-ok.html#post479358

etc.

My point being: there is fractured information spread across different posts. One must be really wanting to know to weave together the different "threads" to a coherent "fabric". That takes lots of reading. I think we're giving too much credit to the richness of information from past threads without really checking it up for ourselves.

This is, therefore, a good opportunity for volunteers to put together a comprehensive "how to" article on tonearm balancing, cartridge mounting and alignment, peppered with lots of general theories and illustrations. Any volunteers? I volunteer to write the text. I am too lazy to make the illustrations.

Would have volunteered had I the adequate knowledge to put together a guide. Being an infantile novice in this subject I might just hinder the process than help. Appreciate the thought though. Ta!

What was wrong in my asking? Where in my approach did u find something wrong? It seems u guys are projecting this as a criminal offence :-)

G401 has beautifully asnwered to your above post. Its easy said than done.Search always don't help in getting things exactly what am wanting.

We are all sane people who know whats useless. Thanks is showing respect to someone who has cared to answered your query. Its a basic ettiquette that should come from within and not thinking how much storage space of forum it will consume.
