I am thinking about a budget amp. And I can't get along with bad sound. The sound must be decent if not great. Can Norge deliver? How it can compare with Marantz PM5004?

I am thinking about Norge 4242. Norge 1000 have better output wattage. But I can't play songs in very high volume, so I am happy with 40w output. Is there any difference in sound quality between these two Norge amps?

A local guy, who stays far far from me now, have Norge. But he doesn't have great opinion about Norge. But I see great reviews about it online.

Please share your honest opinions. So I can decide.

Thanks.

The Norge is not just 'decent', it delivers excellent sound and can definitely hold its ground against amps that cost twice as much or more.

I recommend going for the Norge 2060 instead of the 4242 just so you do not feel the need for more power in the near future. The 2060 and 1000 sound exactly the same and are identical inside - except that the 1000 has a bigger power transformer that enables the amp to deliver more output power.

Sound quality, I believe, is a matter of personal preference and a great lot depends on what speakers you pair with the amp. In the favorable reviews of Norge you will find that the amp is paired with either Norge's own millennium speakers or Wharfedale 9 or 10 diamond series. My Norge 2060 is hooked up to Mordaunt Short Carnival 6 floor standers and I am very satisfied with the combo.

I haven't heard the Marantz PM5004, but I read here that some FMs prefer the Norge sound over the PM5004. If possible, audition both amps before purchasing. The Marantz is definitely better built and "looks" Hi-Fi, while the Norge amps look like a DIY project. See this post - One FM's opinion on Marantz PM5004 & Norge 1000.

You could also consider the Sonodyne and Astonia amps for excellent sound at reasonable price. I've heard Sonodyne and they are super, but for Astonia I've only read reviews on this fourm.

Good luck.

This is how I did my comparision:

Sound Quality: I found both to be the same
Looks: Marantz is beautiful compared to Norge (Didn't matter to me though, I'm not married :p)
Price: Norge (Half the price of marantz)

So, overall winner, Norge, same sound quality at half the price.

Purchased Norge 2060 two days back from chennai at Rs.10,020. I have been listening to this amp with Marantz CD5001 CD player and Monitor Audio Silver RS1 speaker for last two days. I have NAD355 and Marantz PM7001 amplifiers also. Norge is not as refined or delicate like Marantz. But sound is very very musical and you will enjoy it throughly. If you have limited budget, Norge is a very very good amplifier. But if your budget is higher (may be four times than Norge 2060) Marantz Amps are great purchase.
Regards,
Partho.

Purchased Norge 2060, received today. Very good musical amp for my liking. I like mid and vocals. This amp delivers it perfectly. I am happy with it.

Thanks much to all who posted in this thread for the valuable inputs.

I'll experiment few more days with different speakers and try to post my findings.

You can look for Boston Acoustics A26. Please have liked it pairing with Norge amps, you can find many reviews in forum.
Another option is to look of speakers of the same make... Norge amps sound great with their own speakers as well :)

Good luck with your purchase, what speakers have you paired? If possible pls do share few pics of the setup.

Between the 2060 and 4242, which amplifier should one go for? Bear in mind that Norge has recently revised (increased) the prices of all their products..

Even though revised prices very economical.Iam thinking for Norge1000.

In case you're looking for alternatives.

Take 2060.
Believe me the higher power amp sound better and more "articulate" compared to smaller power amp - at least at decently loud listening levels (~85 dB)

I have Norge 1000 and Norge 2030, and for some months both amps were in the same room. The way Norge 1000 handles bass and lower mids is more authoritative compared to Norge 2030.
