hi
for the last one week i have been doing thorough research on buying 40 inch lcd/led .....

i was biased towards sony ......but when i tried to play my external hard disk on all the sony led/lcd ..........none of them recognised my external hard disk

the only exception was 32 cx420 ..,, it was playing all formats of video

therfore i do ask why are people buying sony ........when u cant play any movie from ur usb or hard disk .....

pl advice what is the real scenario

Brand name is on priority than playing USB movies for not "so techy" people. They will be happy with cable /DVD mostly. Majority buyers will be like this only.

You are looking at market as per YOUR priority.

For a typical buyer PQ is more important than USB play capabilities. Any day I 'd choose a TV with best picture quality over a load of hi-fi featured one, let that be any brand.

There are people who buy Tvs based on features such as USB playback, more screen size per buck. For them Sony is not the ideal choice or even samsung when it comes to screen size.
But there are people who buy tvs based on performance for them Sony/samsung are stong contenders.

In the CRT world there were many people who bought tvs based solely on the PMPO and woofer, even if the tv had a crappy picture quality.

People who buy TV for the picture quality do not looks for specific brands, they buy whatever tv that offers the best picture quality at the time of their purchase.

People who look for features or brand value in spite of picture quality mostly buy Sony,Samsung or even LG.

Friend, Actually speeking only formats supported through USB is not ONLY decidind factor. Most important is Brand, Picture quality, sound quality, after sales support, Tech parameters. Where Sony is ahead of others.
In all Sony is really reputed & trusted brand worldwide.
By the way, new EX720 series can support DIVx videos through USB.

Why people buy LG, Samsung over Sony?
(My viewpoint)

1. Price :- Low price compared to SONY
2. Offers/Freebies :- Very attaractive offers like Blu ray player, HD Movies etc from LG
3. Availibility:- Max. stocks available at dealers place (Sony always have shortages of many models)
4. Formats supports through USB

another reasons

Better Sevice
Very good ,aggressive pricing
10% More Screen Real Estate ( LG's 42 Inch to Sony's 40 Inch)
MNC brand having it's own technology and developmental and manufacturing capacity ( still I think Sony is not making their panels)

Performance wise I think Sony and Samsung are the same. LG is behind these two in terms of picture quality. Feature wise Samsung definitely has the edge. Also the onboard speakers (though crappy on every lcd) of samsung are slightly better than sony.
The fact that samsung lcds can play almost every format easily is a huge huge plus for me. I have tried several 1080p mkv files ( some around 15 gigs) on my samsung lcd and it plays them without any problems. Also I was able to Dolby Digital 5.1 when i connected my onkyo 3300 to my lcd through spdif. No need to plug in your laptop, just connect that usb drive of yours and get into the action!! The fact that one can add subtitles too is sweet too!! Except .m2ts my tv was able to play every other format like divx, avi, mkv, mp4, flv etc.

1. NO
2. Maybe (same is also applicable for Sony as well)
3. NO( i paid for a ex 710 for my sister and got it delivers within a hour)
4. NO

Real reason why people choose other brands:

There are better, much better tv's available in the markets today which can produce great picture unlike most of Sony LCD.

Why people buy Sony:

Mostly because its a Sony, u re-brand moser baer to Sony and people will still buy that.

FYI, i am having the cx520 and its going fine and mine doesnt support NTFS drives. So that might be the reason for incompatibility of your hdd. Dint you go through the I-manual which explains every nook and corner of the functions of the TV ? . So if the drive doesnt get recognised, then format it to exfat or fat32... It should work. THe formats supported by my TV are mpeg1/2, divx and mpeg4 (only certain types)....

Since the cx420 is inferior to the cx520, there is reason for why it shouldnt support all file systesms. As the other members say, when it comes to wide format support, SAMSUNG wins the race...

Even i am biased towards SONY because of the name and i cant change my mind, whatever people say. Perhaps if i see both SAMSUNG and SONY side by side and if the former satisfies me in picture quality i may regret for having purchased SONY ;)

Just my two phooti kaudis here,
anfjavid pre-empted me, I was just about to suggest this by reply but when I scrolled down to post a reply, I found he had already said it. My oppo dvd-980h does not read NTFS formatted hard/pen drives, either.

Now about Sony
I am sorry to say that this giant has resorted to tremendous cost cutting and downsized quality lately, esp in India. If you have to get a sony, make sure its made in japan or else perish the thought, is my advice. As such, very few TV makers make their own panels. Panasonic is definitely one of them so do give that plasma a thought.

LG is a resurrected maker which had almost become extinct. The earlier avatar was called Goldstar, LG now means 'lucky goldstar' and not 'life's good' as many still believe.
They offer better value for money than samsung, overall, but are just a wee shade behind in quality and features.

For Your Answers i will say a Big NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,
I have samsung LCD and Sony LCD at my home.
Samsung @ my native kerala
Sony @ my Chennai home.
Both are having same diemensions
Feature wise Samsung is few points head of sony
But the main thing Picture and Sound "Sony Kills Samsung".

Well samsung have their own tech and make their own panels, but whether they use them in all their lcds is a different story.
Again not all samsung SPVA panels are made in korea many are made in china due to cheap labour.

Panasonic doesn't make large size lcds for that they use panels from LG.
Philips whose flagship tvs are quite good and among the top in performance again don't make any panels and use panels from Sharp for last year and this year high end models.

So just because a company makes their own panel doesn't make their tvs best. They may however have the price edge.

If you want a Sony lcd made in japan good luck finding a new one in the world.Sony has closed all its lcd manufacturing/assembly facilities in Japan.

Many huge first tier companies use proprietary stuff in their lcd panel.
A LG OEM panel will be different from Lg panels they use in their own tvs.it will differ in backlight, color filter, outer layers etc.
Same goes to Sony they have a joint partnership with Samsung and Sharp.
There lcds have different color filter, backlight, external layers etc.

There is also more to a tv then just panels.Image processing makes a huge difference.

In todays globilization you have outsource in order to be competitive.

Last I heard from few of my friends , that Sony 2010 new led panels are from sharp. Is this true?

Last I heard from few of my friends , that Sony 2010 new led panels are from sharp. Is this true?

In 2010 the following models used sharp panels EX700,NX700,NX800 and all 60" panels.
They then introduced thr EX710,NX710,NX810 in middle of 2010.Reason being according Sony press briefing there was a shortage of Sharp panels made in their joint 10g facility in osaka,Japan. Also the plant was not 100% efficient in 10g terms. So Sony was forced to lauch a new series with a SPVA tech from their joint S-lcd partnership with samsung in korea(they could have done a lottery like samsung, but they didn't).
