How to connect a Powered Sub in a Stereo set up?

Thanks for all the inputs.
Wow this has become complicated - at least for me.
Currently I have disconnected the Sub from Amp and connected to the AVR - Subout for use in 5.1. Though as you guys pointed out it does not add much base w.r.t. to the fronts.
