Hi, One of my friend is having a problem in his monitor and he asked me for a solution. I suggested him to use a vga to component cable and connect it to his CRT TV. I even helped him to purchase the cables via eBay.

The problem is when we connect the cable there is no signal. We tried every thing.

So can any one tell me what is the proper way to connect the CRT TV to PC using a vga to component cable.

Check if your card specs support tv out. I think there are two types of these cables. One that support Nvidea cards and others that support ATI card. I am using ATI 4350 card on my HTPC with a component cable to connect it to my Philips 55" Rear Projection TV which has only composite, svideo and component inputs.

You can connect your PC to your wide screen TV if either the TV has an RGB (HD-15 or 5 RCA) input or if your computer can output its signal in component. Some video cards can do this natively (some ATI) or via a "dongle" (most Radeon cards), some NVIDIA cards have component output also. Bottom line: you'll have to check the specs of your video card. If there is no RGB input on the TC or component output from the video card, you'll need to get an RGB to Component transcoder, or scan converter (really two names for the same thing). The cable which you have is just a passive device and cannot do what a scan converter does. So if your card does not output component video on particular vga pins, your cable will not work. I have tried scan converters too. The quality was never upto the mark. Ultimately I had to buy an external ATI card to connect the tv.

I don't know about VGA to Component Video converters but I recently purchased a VGA to Composite video converter cum S Video converter. Very tiny box, needs power from computer's USB port or external wallwart 5V adapter.

But the conversion clearly has degradation of picture quality.

Cost Rs 1650.

@mbhangui:

I'm not sure about the system specification.... But the PC do not have a separate video card it is connected to a mother board.

I will post the system specifications... sooner...

By the way, how do I check the video card specification for the component out put. Please educate me on this one.

What motherboard are you using? The motherboard specs will tell you which graphics chip is being used.

You can always put an external Graphics card (which supports tv out) if you have spare slots on your motherboard.

That is a scan converter. I have tried this in my journey to connect tv to my pc. I did not find the quality good enough.

You cannot connect A PC with VGA output (This uses a High Density 15 pin connector) to a HDTV component input with a cable. The conversion requires an active converter that adjusts the amplitude of two of the component signals. Component video uses RCA phono connectors. There are also problems with adjusting the scan rate of the computer video board to those of the HDTV. More than not, you will also want to fix the color as well.

This box solves all those problems, and looks good on the screen.
