Hi All,

I have come across some audio files in a file format called "ape", which I am clueless about how to play them.
I have the following audio player softwares on my lappy but none of them seems to be happy playing this format:
1. Foobar
2. VLC
3. Winamp
4. WMP
5. Real Player

I have done some R&D on the net about opening these files by installing some plugins in the winamp player but none of them is working. So, What I am thinking about is to convert these files to either WAV/FLAC/mp3(320kbps) and play it on my existing players rather than downloading a fancy player again.
Any suggestions from the audio gurus here?

Thanks!
Vivek

You dont need to convert the file(s). You just need a Monkey's audio plugin for foobar or for any of the other players as well. They are readily available at each of the home pages.

Try Monkey's Audio. Its free player and convertor.

Thanks Shailender. i will try that out.

A Foobar plugin is always desirable. Let me check out the Monkey Audio plugin for Foobar.

You can use RadLight APE DirectShow Filter (126KB) and can play ape files in any DirectShow based player like Windows media player, winamp, foobar etc

.ape is the file extension of Monkey's Audio compressed file. Monkey's Audio compresses uncompressed PCM wave files to about 45-50% of original size. So use Monkey's Audio to get wave files from .ape. It's a freeware.

You might also have come across .wv files - this is wave files compressed by Wavepak. UI is command line but it's fast compared to Monkey's Audio.

just google and get a cracked imtoo mpeg encoder or xillisoft encoder and they'd convert the frkn ape! format to any other audio format you desire!

Hi All,

Just downloaded the Monkey Audio plugin for Foobar from here and the apes are singing now :clapping:
Thanks to all for your help.

One thing I noticed about the ape files is that the sound quality is much better than the mp3s. I have done a comparison between the 320kbps mp3 and the ape file of the same song and found the ape files to be more clear and not clinical sounding like the mp3s.

Cheers!

I know a quite nice tool that can help convert APE to WAV or FLAC.

It can also help:

Convert APE to uncompressed audio formats like APE to WAV, APE to AIFF, or APE to AU
Convert APE to lossless compressed audio formats like APE to M4A (Apple Lossless) or APE to FLAC
Convert APE to lossy compressed audio formats like APE to MP3, APE to OGG, APE to WMA, APE to AAC, APE to RA, APE to MP2, APE to AC3 and more
Convert and play APE in iTunes/iPod/iPhone/iPad/Apple TV/Mac/QuickTime and more
Convert and play APE in Winamp, Windows Media Player, Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000 and more
Convert and play APE on Android, Motorola, BlackBerry, LG, Samsung, Xbox 360, Microsoft Zune, PSP, PS3, Wii and more

Find it in Google by typing "Convert and Play APE on Mac/Windows/iTunes/iPod/Winamp/WMP/Android".

.ape is LossLESS compression. NO information is thrown away (Loss). You can convert an ape file to a Wav or FLAC file and Zero info will have been lost from the original file.

MP3 is lossy compression. An MP-3 320 Throws Away almost 75% of the information !

I use Avdshare Audio Converter to convert APE to WAV.
It also can batch Convert APE to WAV with high Audio Quality on Mac and Windows

Use Format Factory to convert your audio files into FLAC. This software is one of the best and it's free.
