Hello All,

I'm a new entrant to this very informative AV threading Forum. Looking forward to a great experience and learning from the experts out here.

My purpose here is to get some very valuable information for my DIY project on Building a Speaker system for my Onkyo TX-SR506 AV Receiver.

I'm based in Bangalore, hence, looking for locally sourced parts and accessories.

Objective is to build a low budget yet a decent sounding speaker system (5.1 Channel) speakers, for my room size (12x15 feet).

Complete DIY - Right from Driver selection, Box Building and Fine Tuning.

Hoping to see and talk to the experts helping me complete this project.

More detailed write up on my requirements in my next posts ....

ok.. taking it further..

My Onkyo TX-SR506 (7.1 Ch) Receiver's amplifier specification says -

Amplfier - Specifications
75 Watts / Channel @ 8 Omhs (FTC)
130 Watts / Channel @ 6 Omhs (IEC)
160 Watts / Channel @ 6 Omhs (JEITA)

Keeping this in mind, i wish to build a 7.1 setup.

1. what would be the ideal wattage / omhs required per speaker for each of the speakers.

1.Front-Left / Right (plan to have 2 drivers box Tweet+Woofer for each box)
2. Surround - Left / Right (No Idea abt number/type of Drivers)
3. Surround Back - Left / Right (No Idea abt number/type of Drivers)
4. Center - Center. (No Idea abt number/type of Drivers)
5. Powered Sub Woofer.

For Speakers 1-4, the speakers should be compact (no Towers preferred, as i have a space crunch) bookshelf or sizes in between a Bookshelf and Cube.
- Need to buy from scratch.

For Speaker 4 (Center), again a compact sized one.
- Need to buy from scratch.

For Speaker 5 (Powered Sub), i was hoping to use some already available 6 Sub Driver (Specs - 40W @ 4 omhs, 6" in size) with a Sub-woofer Plate Amplifier (100W Peak-180W, 4 omhs).
- Need to build Enclosure.
- Expert's advise needed.

Enclosure Build -

Using MDF 17mm Boards (8x4ft Boards costing Rs 55 per Sqft), there is one more MDF with Water proof costing Rs 75 per SqFt. Need Advise on this as well.

Ok.. Here i start ...

My Room Size - 12x15 Feet.
My listening pattern - 60% music + Television / Rest 40% Movies from my DVD Player.

AV Receiver - Onkyo TX-SR506 (7.1 Channel)

Amplifier - Specifications given in the User manual.
75 Watts / Channel @ 8 Omhs (FTC)
130 Watts / Channel @ 6 Omhs (IEC)
160 Watts / Channel @ 6 Omhs (JEITA)

Based on the above specs, i need to build a suitable speaker system.

Front Speakers -
A compact bookshelf design with a tweeter + Midrange (or Woofer). Or a Single Full range Driver.

Driver size and Wattage = Need Expert's opinion ?

Surround Speakers -
A compact bookshelf design with a tweeter + Midrange (or Woofer). Or a Single Full range Driver.

Driver size and Wattage = Need Expert's opinion ?

Surround Back Speakers -
A compact bookshelf design with a tweeter + Midrange (or Woofer). Or a Single Full range Driver.

Driver size and Wattage = Need Expert's opinion ?

Powered Sub-Woofer -
A Powered Sub Woofer using the available parts with me,

6" Sub Woofer Driver - 40W @ 4 omhs (donated by my friend, who does not need it anymore). Can save on money if this is enough.

Sub-woofer Amplifier plate - 100W (Peak 180W) Output @ 4-8 Omhs compatibility.

Need to build a suitable Sealed Box Enclosure (Design n size to be determined). Need Experts advise on this.

Experts, please advise here..

Speaker Boxes -

I've decided to use 17mm (3/4 Inch) MDF Board for this project. Just checked on the cost, it's costing some Rs 55/- per SqFt for 8x4 Feet sized boards.

Connecting Terminals + Crossovers (if any required) + Speakers Wires + any other accessories List. I need to find a source in Bangalore (hope to find them in SP Road Stores).

However, i need to first zero in on the Drivers (Type and Output Power Specs) based on the valuable advise of the Experts here..

At this point of time.. my Brain is going tongs with all kinds of questions.. i'm just putting all of them in this thread to get a clarification...

What does Amplifier specification of 75W / Channel @ 8 ohms mean ?

Is it that I can use an 8 ohms driver/Speaker of Maximum 75W Output and not more than this?

If I intend to use a Tweeter + Woofer, both @ 8 ohms for a Channel.. should Watts of both the speakers be 75W@ 8 ohms each? if not, what would be the ideal balance in terms of Watt distribution among these 2?

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
