Been using HTPC since years as i am into gaming too so have been playing Bluray movies through Nvidia GTX 1060 via PowerDVD latest version.

But now i want to start getting Physical copies of Bluray instead of digital, so my question should i buy Bluray player in a budget of 10K to play movies through the player or buy Bluray ROM for PC?

Which of these 2 above options would have better picture quality? Can a bluray player stand a chance against HTPC (with good gaming card like Nvidia GTX 1060?)

In terms of pq or sq, I don't see or hear any difference between gt610 and pana bd75.

Ofcourse downloaded ripped movies have inferior quality compared to original Blu ray discs.

My mind.

Sent from a handheld device. Some typos may creep in

no not about rips, if i am playing original blurays would a player give similar quality or i should just get a bluray drive for PC? :/

Anything would give similar experience I believe. Standalone bdp or Blu Ray rom will work as digital transport only.

As long as no software or hardware is applying their brain (read processing) before signal goes to AVR via HDMI, I think both will provide similar experience.

However, I don't have any experience with Blu Ray rom in a computer.

I would get a BD ROM, rip all my BDs to ISO or better MKV ( Using This Guide ) and store them on a NAS and then use my HTPC via Kodi to play them in full Glory.

Infact this is what my setup is. I also have a bluray player BD60 hardware hacked for all regions .... For me Quality was same in both, but playing through Kodi makes it more apealing.

Hmmm tbh I am tired of using external hdds for storing full Isos and plying it on power DVD. Quality is amazing no doubt but now cuz of space constraint I was thinking about buying disks. Only concern is the quality, I don't want any quality degrade that's why I wanted to make sure it doesn't happen before I buy a player and start collecting bluray disks.

So I can go and buy any 5k-10k range bluray player and connect it to avr to get full htpc like quality?

If you are tired of external HDD and also have space constraints, get a NAS, Instead of purchasing Blu-rays, each costing 1000-1200, invest in a NAS, or a file server like WD My cloud and done with it. its a long term proper solution.

Hmmm so in short you suggest Htpc is better then bluray players and I should stick to it. Btw I have no idea about NAS :/ and also if I don't want digital I can get bluray drive for pc and start buying bluray disks for playback and collection? Are bluray drives for pc reliable for long use?

HTPC is any day better than Bluray Players, but also depends, on individual, the learning curve, time and effort you need to spend on getting an HTPC ready ..etc ..etc, so for some people BD player is much simpler, switch on pop disk and thats it. Bluray drives are ok as far reliability goes there is no guarantee, MY LG bluray drive dies after 2 years, but my ASUS is still working 4 years.

Thank you bro, really appreciated :)

Hi All,

Regarding to this topic, i want clear my doubt. Is there any quality difference in hdmi output (Audio Video both) between Low end graphic card (like Geforce 210, price range ~ 3k to 10K ) and high end (above 15k) while watching Bluray movies?

Thanks

^^ Short Ans ..

No as far as Movies go, and Yes as far as Gaming goes.

Hi Sam

Thanks...

Anytime ... you didnt ask for a long ans:p .. well a quick one on the house none the less ..:D

More expensive cards will gain the ability to play Movies encoded with latest and better codecs like H.265 and have better rendering capabilities. So in that regard higher quality cards will give better pic quality in those media files.

However if you are not compressing or playing any compressed movie, or there is no encoding/decoding involved with any complex media codecs, like paying a simple BD ISO file or a simple straight mkv ripped from a Bluray, there would not be any difference ....:)

Modern cards are meant for gaming and have superior features as compared to any video extraction in Blu-ray players. One of the biggest advantages of GPU processing is the capability to handle high speed movement. In fast action scenes, I believe a good GPU will have a distinct advantage.

At the same time, there are a number of factors that make this discussion gray.

1. Ultimately the capability of the TV/Projector does matter. If the GPU does all the grunt work, and the TV spoils it, that would be a waste.

2. The AVR also comes into the picture. Again, if all the grunt work is spoiled by the AVR, you will achieve nothing.

AMD/Nvidia are neck to neck if not ahead as compared to IDT/Silicon Optrix in terms of video processing, noise suppression, etc. In fact, the competition between AMD and Nvidia is so intense that they have moved to a scale far ahead of IDT/Silicon Optrix.

If the whole sequence of players and processors are properly set up, at least for 1080p, I am not sure you can find much difference between HTPC and a good Blu-ray player.

Cheers

An Oppo BDP 103 (or probably UDP 203) may potentially give better quality because:

1. No color space conversion from component to RGB (typically done on a PC with older Graphics cards - on later ones also, depends on the decoding software if you could pass color without any conversion or processing).

2. HDMI inputs mean it can potentially serve as Video processor for DTH, etc. and improve upscaling/deinterlacing quality then your typical TV/Projector. Not aware of such option on a HTPC unless you go with expensive HDMI capture cards.

3. Remote control and HDMI CEC - unless you get a kit for PC, you are out of luck particularly with CEC which I am yet to achieve on a PC with GTX970 card through HDMI/DVI output.

ehh not much technical i am in these, but i tested same Bluray movie on my system GTX 1060 nvidia and powerdvd 16 and on my friends bluray player (sony and lg price range 9-12K). And belive me the picture quality difference was quite noticeable. Bluray player PQ was not sharp and blurry as compared to PC.

I dont agree to this point, what bluray player outputs will be same as GTX 1060,Since everthing is digital (HD 1080P),it may be the display difference coz
you will be using t.v for a bluray player and monitor for a pc,may be the settings of this display that is giving the difference.

But there will be certainly huge difference when it comes to audio part, that is
getting true hd audio (5.1/7.1 ch)..In a bluray player it can be done easily by connecting hdmi output (v 1.3) to avr for the later to do all the audio decoding.

Whereas in a pc you will need a high end pc or a graphic card which can transmit both a/v through hdmi either bitstream or a software player like arcsoft/power dvd to do the decoding.

thanks
rajesh.
