No, that's not the thing. Most non-audiophiles associate loudness to sound quality. Hence, the companies want to make their songs louder and louder by applying dynamic range compression. This works every time on most of the audience who are with decent to cheap gear. Hence came the 'loudness war'. Companies are hell-bent on achieving much loudness than the competition and therefore more people keep listening to the music on repeat and which translates to more revenue.That argument was valid in the days of AM radio. But today with FM radio and digital streaming on capable smartphones with reasonably decent earphones, one doesn’t need that loudness to be provided on the tracks even for radio/streaming.
This is just like why many people find brighter pictures have better quality than neutral pictures.
