Installing Xpenology on HP EX495 Server

Dheeraj/Pitchucold....

Any update on Xpenology stability how is it going, since now I am free from my HET, and few other projects (like subsonic on Pi) I want to give this a try. Whats the latest here. Pichucold since its been few months, you must be using Xpenology, how is the stability, can Xpenology be used as a permanent NAS OS.

What features do you think are missing if we compare it with DSM 5.0 on say DS413. I am particularly interested in Audio our from USB, does that work.

I current am searching the latest stable version to download and have a go at it so thought to ask you people how is it going.

Would love to hear few updates on this... :)

ok dheeraj, will look in to OMV (though I was not very impressed with it when I tried it like 2 years back) FreeNAS current version seems very stable NAS OS with plugin ans all, but does not have USB Audio out.........anywhay there are other features on DSMas well that I simply love plus I am very well versed the DSM so was interested in DSM on x86. So audio ain't working on DSM here????

What is the general feedback on this if you have used XPEnology

@sam9s all plug ins available for omv too. It's mighty stable and hassle free. Base being debian, the world is our oyester.... While xpenology is good especially the comfort of dsm for you, but it's still closed and for me that's a deal breaker... I love to experiment constantly without disturbing regular functioning. It's for this reason my nas runs plex, lms and squeezelite feeding optical audio out to the yamaha v473 reciver. All I need in this chain now is a good dac. The mobo I have as base has ion chipset so if I want I could turn the nas into a htpc on the side too... power of debian

ok cool OMV it is then ..... Actually I am developing a Home Entertainment system for one of my friend ... with XBMC and a DIY NAS for him. Synology is out of question for him coz of the expense, though he just loved DSM, (hence XPEnology was on cards) ...... I am gonna check on OVM again on VM and build a system for him .... XBMC is on Intel NUC. ...... will create a new thread for this entire project ...... thanks again for the insight .. :)

If u choose the nas h/w carefully, then you can save the Intel nuc all tpgether. E350N or ion boards with 4gb ram and ssd boot are rocking. Put in a good cabby like bitfenix colossus gives enough space for a good 5-6 hdds. It's decent power to run omv and xbmc too.

mmmm but I have suggested to keep, NAS separate .... though idea is enticing. NUC was his choice but yes I did put my ok stamp on it ..... :) ... Its arrived now I am configuring it as I post. (It actually is a very tiny piece of hardware, even tiny than ZeeBox and I am pretty impressed (how it performs is yet to see)) Storage for NAS will be huge 3x3=9 TB HDD (another reason he did not want to go for synology as he wanted to spend more of HDD).

On my setup I have 5x3tb and a ssd (overkill) for debian. I ain't running xbmc but anytime I want I just need to enable desktop environment and install xbmc.
I like the idea of separates too... nuc is extremely exciting but I feel again a tank for an ants job. Zbox pico or cubox is pretty plenty I'd for xbmc alone

yes I gave him the idea of CubieBOX or even RaspPi, but he was somehow impressed with ZeeBox, which was much expensive for just running XBMC so advised him to go fro NUC.

Hi sam

Xpenplogy is great so far. Touchwood.

I haven't tampered the initial setup due to lack of time and fear of breaking the working setup. I typically use them for Nfs for xbmc running on win 8 and sonos.

I have updated the latest patch as we'll.

Btw how is cubox/nuc working with xbmc...eagerly waiting for ur posts.

Dheeraj has tried cubox i2 and he has positive experience with it.

can you pass me the link of exact version/patch you are using, and what hardware is ti running on ?

Hi Sam,

I am running Xpenology on EX495 hardware. It is a HP Mediasmart server had WHS V1 on it. I overwrote it with xpenology gnoboot DSM5.0 Update 2.

It is becoming a pain to have expenology. Copy speed is slowing down and there is very little support available. I guess it makes sense if you are Linux guys compiling kernels etc.

Looking at alternatives again :) Suggestions welcome !!

Yea +1 for OMV ...... learning curve is a bit high, interface is complicated, but its a rock solid product once it is setup properly.
