Interest Check: LPs

@ capt: mostly hindi film singles....

@sachu... you are most welcome to adopt them an the Roberta Flack Lp... That one was one of the watershed moments in her career... I would have loved to have it... but then it would defeat the purpose of this exercise.... that is something both santosh and I have been trying to be disciplined about....

but yeah! enjoy guys! discover some old gems and have fun!

Hi Malvai,

You can keep this Lp for yourself no problem at all :licklips:

Regards,

Sachin

EP means Extended play I guess. Do each of them contain songs from a single movie? That would be a wonderful acquisition.

But I find it surprising that there are no takers? What could be the reason? Am I missing something obvious?

I think EPs play on a Gramaphone which are hard to come by in good condition. I may be wrong though. The only person I have come across on this forum who has a working Gramaphone is member Suhas.

Bro,
EP means extended play....

usually, EP's would have just one song on each side, to accomodate the tracks that could not fit into the regular two sides...

EP's were also issued to release singles...

They will play on your regular LP players either on 33.3 or 45 RPM, depending on which speed its been cut on.

IMHO, 45 RPM sounds superior to 33.3.

Hi Santhol,

EPs turn on the turntable more quickly than LPs, they don't run as long. The usually hold two or three songs total time from 15 to 30 minutes. They ran longer than singles, playing 45rpm speed.

Sachin

Even I have a working gramaphone. Not the one with a horn but one in a box with folded horn. I tried playing a few records a decade and half ago (they are different from LPs) but didn't like the SQ. It was very ordinary. It is lying in my mom's place. (hopefully:sad:)

Gramaphones are not that hot on the SQ capt.... plus they play 78 RPM discs, the material of these plus the 78 RPM speed does not allow great SQ... but yeah, good thing to have as a part of your collection!

Hi,

Incidentally ABBA-The Visitors album has the distinction for being the 1st Album ever to be released on Redbook format CD.

If I am not mistaken the first album to be released on CD was Billy Joel's --52nd Street.

Hi Rajiv,

I quote Wikipedia below

"The first test CD was pressed in Hannover, Germany, by the Polydor Pressing Operations plant. The disc contained a recording of Richard Strauss's Eine Alpensinfonie (in English language, An Alpine Symphony), played by the Berlin Philharmonic and conducted by Herbert von Karajan.[11] The first public demonstration was on the BBC television program Tomorrow's World when The Bee Gees' album Living Eyes (1981) was played.[12] In August 1982 the real pressing was ready to begin in the new factory, not far from the place where Emil Berliner had produced his first gramophone record 93 years earlier. By now, Deutsche Grammophon, Berliner's company and the publisher of the Strauss recording, had become a part of PolyGram. The first CD to be manufactured at the new factory was The Visitors (1981) by ABBA.[13] The first album to be released on CD was Billy Joel's 52nd Street, that reached the market alongside Sony's CD player CDP-101 on October 1, 1982 in Japan."

unquote

I correct myself that the First album to be pressed is ABBA - Visitors.

Hi Malvai

No probs buddy, eagerly awaiting:licklips:

Took my Garrard to the guy Rajiv had referred. Seems to be a very knowledgeable guy. He opened it up and figured that Idler wheel has worn out and advised replacement of cartridge with Shure M 44-7E or M55E

My search is on.
