Is Essense STX audibly better than Xonar DX ?

When u use graphic card hdmi for sound also doesn't it bypass ur xonar card totally ?

Can one sound card give simultaneous connections :
analog to stereo amp and HDMI to AV reciever , with uncompromised quality ?

Or how to take HDMI from PC ; sound card or graphic card for movies ?

thnks

sirjee i hope I can give a decent answer to your question provided your question is really as simplistic as it appears.....

1. make any item default player (any soundcard in case of mulitple soundcards - say I have a asus m3n783m hdmi and realtek optical& analog onboard)
2. I use MPC-HC for movie playback using HDMI digital for audio output (you can chose soundcard/audio out in MPC-HC). This is say for normal movie playback via tv bypassing the AVR (hence audio + video through hdmi to TV). I can chose realtek digital optical out for 5.1 movies through avr (changing output in mpc-hc)
3. I use cyberlink for 5.1 digital optical out for dvd movies to avr (you can chose audio out here too).
4. I use cplay for asio digital optical out (realtek) to AVR for music (chose output)
5. I use winamp/foobar for wasapi out from pc/dell laptop for optical digital out to DAC. I use usb connection (USB default soundcard in case of DAC).

Net net you can choose the souncard/default audio out for each SW application - hence you cvan use say HDMI sometimes, analog or digital out sometimes. The mobos with optical/coaxial/analog & hdmi can be set through different applications. The same is true for soundcard.

PS: Note you may not be able to use all of them at the same time.

@bazee - when using the hdmi (for my mobo) the analog sections or realtek is not used at all. HDMI solution is inbuilt in the mobo architecture (present latest versions of soundcards from ATI and nvidia) - digital signals can pass directly bypassing the other integrated SC realtek. Ditto for most SCs.

In case of a graphics card (present 5 series for ATI and certain recent versions of nvida) a requisite driver from ATI/Nvidia enables it to bypass SC completely and pass the signal via HDMi - some HDCP @@#@# - blame the fools in the movie industry !!!

If sound out from HDMI(GC) is turned on ,Xonar will not in action & will not be needed as AVR will decode the sound.
If you want to pass only video, you can & sound can be directed to Xonar.

In my case I pass video from DVI to HDMI & sound from D2X.

wow, so many posts on SC..
may i dare to slip a mention of ESI Juli..which I suppose deserves a mention here.. although would be rated below Xonar ST..but still a very decent stereo PCI card

Just found/tried 32bit output in KS output & its working with D2X.
I tried same with wasapi, didnt work.

Now with 32bit,sound is more exiting/live.I wonder how 192/24bit D2X work with 32bit input?
I have modified a driver of Claro-plus.I dont thing driver is making difference here.

Go ahead with your experience...

Jayad, the ESi@Juli has been discussed many times before - actually if I remember right last year. That is a very old card.

Cheers

Not going into too much details of the SQ, which can be found in the last years posts.. the one important thing that I would like to mention for ESI@Juli, as correctly mentioned by Venkat that it is a old card with decent SQ.. is that it supports Mobos with PCI bus speed of 100mz which means that you can use ur 10yr old PC for music listening..Not sure the Essence ST would support that..
I used my old mobo with 810 chipset for this card, and works great..

Hmm..the ESI Juli has been repeatedly mentioned as a card which has one of the cleanest digital outs.

Do not know whether some sort of comparison has been performed on the digital outs. But yes, its compatibility with old PCs is a boon.

Plus, it has excellent drivers when compared to ASUS' nightmare versions.

^^ that seems to be the general opinion regarding digital out, FWIR. Infact, I considered buying the Juli@ just for its digital out but then decided to shift to HDMI.

The D2X's digital out is no better than the onboard digital out, IME.

i assume Xonar ST is a PCI card and STX is a PCIe card. Yes as per the movers and shakers of the audiophile world would probably say that PCI is less prone to jitter than PCIe

jayad08, the consensus seems to be that ST/STX has better SQ. So I guess the Juli@ is out of contention.

However I am curious about Juli@'s availability and pricing in India. Any idea about that ?

thevortex, in my case, I'm not going to be using digital out. I would be hooking up the analogue outputs to my amplifier via RCA.

But I do agree about Asus giving poor driver support.

suprateep, you are correct; ST is PCI & STX is PCIe.

But I am curious about the claim about PCI having less jitter than PCIe. Do you have any links/bookmarks about it ?

hello spirovious

How did you connection your D2X to AVR (Optical or coaxial cable????)

Bothways, 5.1 analoge in & coaxial.
For music analoge & movies digitally.
new music sounds powerful digitally with DSP effects.

@spirovious
thanks bro.....
any issue (configuration issue spacially) so far with digital connection. or All works well w/o any issue

There is no issue for either of the connections.Everything works flawlessly.
Do you want to know any specific?
