Hi,
In the pursuit of buying a plasma tv set I did some market study today. I visited the following shops
1. Home Town, Noida
2. Panasonic showroom in Great India Place Mall, Noida
3. A electronics shop in Sector 18, Noida.

I was interested in 2 models LG 50PK550R and Panasonic-VIERA TH-P50X20D.
The panasonic set comes with a 3 year warranty and the best price was quoted by home town @ Rs.63,000.

None of the dealers had the LG model. Home town had the LG 50PJ350 and quoted a price of Rs.65,000. They also told me that I could buy an extended warranty directly from LG for about Rs.2500 for 2 more years (over and above the standard 1 year warranty). Is this really true? Has anyone here having such a warranty from LG? And if yes does it cover damage to display unit such as vertical lines on the screen.

I do have an extended warranty from LG for my LCD. And it does cover everything including the panel.

Cheers

Yes, extended warranty is available but it costs way more than 2,500.

For 50 inch plasma, I paid approx 5000 per year.

OTOH, I heard that LG is not supplying fresh piece of Plasma to dealers till end of next week. So do take care to check number of hours the set has been used.

Hi Netfreaks, thanks for your reply. Could you please tell me how I can get the exact quote for the 2 years extended warranty on LG 50PK550R. Is there a telephone number from where i can enquire?
You are absolutely right about LG not being able to supply fresh stock. This was confirmed by Home Town Noida. I can wait till jan, that should not be a problem.

Stores like Croma, HomeTown have tie-ups with manufacturers to offer extended warranty at attractive rates.

Please do not hesitate to opt for one, if you are ready to buy a TV from any of these stores (which may be expensive from other outlets - check the price threads in this forum).

The earlier comment on Rs. 5000 per year may be of AMC per year (that is what I was quoted when I purchased my LG set).

while i was hunting for lcd croma guys said that there is extended 2years warranty which covers everything for 2350rs. croma ppls have tie up wit manufacturer ,not all the showrooms give this offer, better to avail the offer which gives us security on our valid money.

You will have to call LG customer care.

There is a supply side issue in Korea, so both LG and Samsung are out of stock for some components for plasma.

A small correction - The warranty for Rs. 2500 extra as stated above is provided by stores like Croma, which tie up with manufacturers for a special bundled price offering. If you notice the price of the set will be higher than what you will pay to other dealers in the same city. The warranty is pretty much valid and honored by the manufacturer. Not sure if LG Customer Care will have any information on such deals.

LG Customer care would have details on warranty that is sold by LG itself. I bought warranty directly from LG.

NetFreaks, Did you buy the extended warranty after the purchase of the T.V or did you buy it along the purchase of the T.V?
Also Which model did you buy for how much and how much did the extended warranty cost you? It would be great if you could tell us all the formalities involved in getting the extended warranty.

You can buy it anytime during existing coverage. E.g. if you have purchased one year warranty (that makes it covered for two years, one year free + one year paid) then you can buy additional warranty anytime during those two years.

I bought two year additional warranty for two years for 12k approx. It was bought after purchasing the TV.

Easiest way it to purchase it from the engineer who would be doing wall mount etc as part of installation. Warranty is directly from LG and you have to write a cheque in favor of LG.

Model was 50PQ70 (50 inch plasma), cost was around 57k.

NetFreak,

I was offered the same at Rs. 4500 plus taxes per year, and 3 year warranty coming with an additional 10 percent discount on total cost. This is same as AMC (even the costs are exactly the same).

I again want to state that what Croma offers is again fully legitimate warranty but at a cheaper cost (Not sure if TV's price @ Croma + their subsidized warranty comes out to same). If you can bargain with Croma on basic set price and also buy additional warranty at less than 3K there is nothing like it.

3k for 3 yr warranty makes a lot of sense. However, there are three things we need to consider w.r.t. Croma:

1. Lackluster attitude of sales personnel. Its almost take it or leave it. To me it appeared that major part of their salary is NOT commission.
2. Price / Availability. Set that I bought was only available as a display piece and Croma was not willing to arrange new piece. M.R.P. of the set was 74k and Croma was not willing to sell i for less than 70. I bought it for 57k.
3. Track Record. We should see how does Croma perform in terms of delivering the service.

Hope if anyone on this forum has availed this service from Croma, they post their experience. I saw similar offer from Hypercity but their prices were way too high.

NetFreak, thanks for your post. This clarifies - the 3 yr warranty from Croma at 3K does not make any sense. Read below/

You paid Rs. 57K + 15K (for addnl 3 yr warranty) = 72K for a FRESH PIECE of equipment. Where as Croma was selling you the same TV, a used one, at 70K + 2.5K = 72.5K(Not sure if the warranty charges will be same for your set as well)

So it made money sense for not buying from Croma. In process you saved atleast Rs 0.5K plus also got saved from being dumped a Display piece.:clapping:

Just got of the phone with LG customer care. LG is quoting Rs. 10000 extended warranty for one year. They will give 15 % discount if i buy the warranty within 15 days of purchase of tv set. That sounds very expensive!

This is for the model 50'' PK 550R T.V costing RS. 62,000 in Delhi.

Netfreaks, do you have the engineers contact info from whom you purchased this warranty?

Spoke to a senior in the industry. His wordings ::

Well, being into a after-sales profession. I would try to make make it in clear words.

From Company point of view - "No extended warranty is valid until and unless company issues you or certifies someone to issues a certificate on company behalf."

ELSE

The Seller (Megastore) will be responsible for the warranty repairs after official warranty.
