What came with the box ought to be the best:)

PS: some people seem to claim that the Baerwald (inner null at 66mm/outer null at 120.89 mm) is superior to the Rega geometry. See post by Dr Pan K here. Further, there are people who swear that the Loefgren is superior to the Baerwald. It is easy to find out for oneself by using the stupid protractor downloadable off vinylengine.

PPS: I have tried both Baerwald and Loefgren for a Origin Live Silver Mark III and SME 3009/II arms and neither worked for me. AFAIK, the Silver follows Rega geometry. I am not sure what SME follows. I could discern IGD in both geometries. Finally what worked for me was to align the front of the headshell with the front of the cartridge. This works as long one uses cartridges with squarish edges. I understand this method completely ignores the concept of correct overhang, but I must say that I have fiddled around a lot with overhang - including the Keith Howard recommended overhang - and it made no difference to trackability nor to the sound - at least in various setups that I have tried (ADC LMF2 tonearm, SME 3009/II tonearm, Origin Live Silver and Encounter tonearms). YMMV, of course.

Bottomline: try the Rega geometry. It should work best.

Hi Joshua,
I faced the same issue of not having squarish edge with ortofon 2m red when using the rega protractor. So kind of used the front edge and tried to make it parallel with lines perpendicular to the edges. Only issue is it has only one point so I can't really have the option to check overhang along a curve. I tried using my jeweler's loupe but I can't see clearly using that so just used my trusted my eye. Do you do that with bare eye or use some magnification ? Any idea is it possible to make one locally Untitled Document

Thanks.

Hi,

According to reports from Abhi (Dr. Bass), the 2M Red in some sense may be a better cart than the Blue. If you wan to upgrade, change to at least the Bronze, if not anything higher. The RP6 can take even better carts, but I understand that may be an overkill for your second system.

Regards.

Hi Asit,
thanks for your suggestion. I agree with DR bass that ortofon 2m red is a great cartridge I have tried it on my transfi tonearm in my VPI table and it performed admirably. The way I think is for a rega table 2m Blue makes a good value proposition as it is supposedly better than 2m red but if I have to move higher then rega exact makes a much better value proposition and it is the best MM cartridge made by rega. I am talking from the UK price perspective the US prices are a bit crazy for rega cartridges. Another cartridge in my radar is dynavector DV 10x or DV 20 x cartridges and people have reported good match. I am in no hurry lets see how it goes.

Thanks.

I endorse that 2M red is a real nice cart and may be a better cart than Blue. It gives very accurate reproduction and now I am using it with my SME 3012 on Garrard 301.

Try Ortofon Super OM10.It may surprise you. Some people prefer it over OM10.Ortofon had to reintroduce it again due to high demand.

Indeed, the Super OM series is a hidden gem. Unfortunately it is now replaced by the 2M series, and may not be easily available any more. I got the Super OM 30 (nude fine line needle) for my Scheu TT from the German Ortofon distributor. Actually Scheu arranged it for me, and the TT came with the Super OM 30 already fitted to the Rega tonearm. It is a very very good MM cart.

I personally do not think the Exact would beat the performance of the 2M Bronze or the Super OM 30. Alternatively, if you want to keep costs down, the Super OM 10 (elliptical needle) is a very decent cart, as Sachu888 has suggested above.

mksharan (Manoj) of this forum (my colleague and now my neighbor too) has the Exact fitted to his Rega 5 TT. I hope, Manoj can share his experience with the Exact.

Since Super OM series carts do not have the bulk of the 2M series, one would have to again lower the Rega arm which is adjusted with spacers to accommodate the 2M series.

Regards.

Congrats Mahiruha !! That Rega is a very elegant TT. As others have said, give it a good phono and cartridge like Dynavector 10x, you will have a super time. By the way if you are serious about MMs, look at this thread on Audiogon forums, there are some serious MM carts discussed here:
AudiogoN Forums: Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?

I bought the Empire EDR9 mm cartridge based on this thread and it really turned out to be a very very good cart, equalling many good MCs in detail resolution and ambience but with the gold grace of MMs. Look for one if you can, it will not cost you a lot but will beat many big MM carts of todays generation.

Hi Sachin,
this super om 10 looks like a very good value for money cartridge. I will try it out in my project debut III when I connect to it to my AVR. Do you know if Om 5e body can accept om 10 stylus? Another question is for my project table arm I seem to lost the tiny cuing thing. Do you know if it is possible to diy it although sonically it doesn't make much difference.

Thanks.

Hello Dr Bass,
thanks for the suggestion. This empire cartridge really looks very interesting. Will try and get one. Is it very demanding in terms of VTA. My current rega RB 303 arm is not very flexible in VTA adjustment and is tuned for ortofon 2m series cartridges.
Thanks.

Congrats on your purchase!

I have to say, I feel kind of bad since i've not played my Rega P3-24 in almost a year! I bought it brand new and played it for about a month and then I came across an excellent Lenco L70 that I picked up. Ever since I got that, the Rega has just been sitting in a box. I keep meaning to set it up alongside my Lenco but never get around to it. I can't bring myself to sell it either (a back up turntable is essential). I've mounted an Ortofon 2M Red on it, to match the red body. I have to say, it's a dreamy looking turntable! But the Lenco is a beast!

Hi Tek,
did you install the spacer for the 2m red cart. If not then your VTA might be out of place. What cartridge and tone arm combo you are using in your Lenco 70? I have a plan to mess around with a Lenco L75 but never got to do it. :)

Thanks.

5e body can take 10 stylus. My suggestion is to buy a new cart as there isn't much difference in price.I can send you my Ortofon Om10 for testing purpose.I am not using it since I have upgraded to AT15Ea
I thing DIY cuing lever is possible.

Hi, the Empire has an elliptical stylus so it is not VERY demanding of VTA. It is a proper high resolution MM cartridge so the better you tune it the better it gets.

Hi Sachin,
thanks for your kind offer but it will be too much of an effort for OM 10.:) AT15Ea looks interesting.Where did you get it from ?

Thanks.

Red = Right

I've used this simple memory method ever since the first time I connected two hifi components. Yesterday, I saw a wiring diagram for a 3.5mm jack. The three parts of a stereo (or balanced mono) jack plug are called tip, ring and sleeve and I noticed that the right channel is wired to the ring (middle section) giving us

Red = Right = Ring

The Rs are with us all the way! :ohyeah:

No I never got around to that. I don't think i've even listened to it with the 2M Red on, I had just transferred it over and took of the Denon DL110 that was there and switch it to the Lenco.

The L70 is great, I am using the DL 110 with the original L70 tonearm. i did a bit of research online, and everyone claims the L70 tonearm is vastly underrated. I tend to agree, although I am sure mine could use some new bearings..

Tek,
Just get any linn arm and drop it into the arm slot of the lenco.. You will be amazed
