Hello everybody, this is my first post on this site, but I've been following it for a long time.
Now I finally need some guidance, so i decided to break the ice and ask for your help

About 2 months ago I started the search for a large screen TV (minimum 50'').
Initially i wanted a LED but after lots of digging on the internet i changed my mind and i decided i want a plasma TV.

I got stuck on these two models: LG 60PK550 or Panasonic 50V20.

I got white hair for how many reviews and forums i read on this subject.
The Panasonic seems to have better overall image quality, better blacks, but many are complaining that it has big problems with fast panning, and that the black level drops over time.
The LG, on the other hand, is bigger (this is a big plus for me), it doesn't seems to have any issues with fast pans, but the overall image quality is poorer than the Panasonic's.
Also the LG brand doesn't inspire me confidence...

The most important for me is the image quality: the colors should be real, blacks are extremely important, i don't want distortions, artifacts, jitter etc.
The 3D does not interest me, and i also ain't gonna play games on it.
I will be using it 90% of the time with Full-HD contend. I also don't care about reflexions, since i will be putting it in a dark room.
My budget is around 1600 euros.

Sadly, where i live i don't have the possibility to see both models side by side, in order to make an objective comparison of the two models (I never saw the LG in a showroom as a matter a fact).

So what do you think? The LG or the Panasonic? Have you ever seen these two models side by side (by chance of course :))?

well pk550 have received a lot of good reviews and 60 definitely is masive

yes pana is good as per picture quality..

i would bet for LG .. its no-nonsense stuff..

neways what will be your viewing distance..

I can adjust my viewing distance to whatever i like it. I can move the couch back and forth without any problem

try waiting for the 2011 plasma models from samsung most have 3d by default and also the extended functionality of your own pvr via an external hdd

And when will these 2011 models arrive? In the first part of the year (January - February)?
I'm very anxious, now that i have the money for it it's very hard to stay and wait :)

Go for 60 PK, I have 50PK and is working flawlessly for past 6 months. Also extra 10inch diagonal is gonna be viewing pleasure. I use xtreamer fr HD content and am more that happy for PQ.

well my earlier comment was wrong most plasmas in the 2010 range have 3d and pvr functionality here are some of the models 1.Samsung plasma C7000-50C7000,58C7000,63C7000
2.Samsung plasma C8000-50C8000,58c8000,63c8000

try getting one of these after the 2011 models have been released so that you can get them at the cheapest rates.

On the question of the time frame of their release well they are demoed at ces in jan low models and most mid range models are available before may/june while the most expensive models will be available at the 3rd quarter of 2011.So as all the info is before you take the decision that suits you the most:)

extra 10" will bring a lot of wow factor, especially since your 90% content is hd, so go for the 60 incher

If your setup is all HD and you have a room that can be dark then why dont you consider a full hd projector and a 120 inch screen rather than be happy with 50 or 60 inch TV's.

I will not go for LG because the 60"PK550 is not that good in terms of features and PQ, i had auditioned the same and did not find it to be that great.

Panasonic is very expensive and doesn't make sense to go for a 50" when you are spending that money.

My advice is to go for Sammy 58c6500 plasma , dunno if currently there is stock available, it's a great set and has good PQ and loads of features.

Panasonic has 3 years warranty. Can you beat that? Believe me flat panel technology has not yet matured. It is just not durable. The technology is brittle and most of the times gives away in a few years. No manufacturer will ever tell you that. Don't even start to compare it with CRT. CRT maybe fat and ugly but will last a decade. What good is a 60'' plasma if it just serves the purpose of a sleek mirror? Many customers who are board members here have been cheated when their plasmas gave away moments after the standard 1 year warranty expired. Some people like me have had a tough time getting service even during the warranty period. You can read about my ordeal with Samsung products, especially the plasma, on this board.

My suggestion is to go with the brand that gives a reasonable warranty like the 3 year warranty offered by Panasonic. Also note that Panasonic has discontinued the 3 year warranty from November 2010. So you should inquire well before buying meaning you should get the old stock (older than nov 2010). Even in the case you decide to go for LG it is a must that you get the extended warranty. LG will charge you extra for it. A ballpark figure is RS.10,000 per year for 50'' LG plasma (got this info from LG customer care a week back). It would be useful to compare the prices after adding the extended warranty charge to the basic cost of the panel. Off-course in case of Panasonic you get the extended warranty free of cost.

Well Mahesh, i would disagree with you on the same, one bad experience does not make the poduct bad, i personally have seen horror stoires with panny plasmas that have come with one year warranty, bought by my friends which had motherboards getting replaced withing the first 3 months itself and hdmi not working and other issues. Also i have seen plenty of sammys working fine without any issues.

As far as samusing is concerned it again depends what experience you have had, i have a 3 1/2 year old plasma from sammy and it is still rocking no issues at all.

Also Panny will not come back with a 3 year warranty so fast, they just did that for festive season to push sales, normally their sets carry one year warranty, same is the case for most manufacturers including sony.Irespective of the fact if u buy at TV worth 20k or 2 lakhs.

So it all depends on the expereince one has had with the product.

Be aware that the OP is from Romania, so the warranty policies would be very different there versus the experiences in India.

Dushie that is exactly why i suggested going for a brand that offers 3 years warranty. The brand should not matter. But I wonder why samsung has never given 3 years warranty on any of their products? :licklips:

LG is nothing good. At 60 it's picture has many let-downs even to be considered VFM.

Turcu - not to divide your options but do consider the Samsung C7000, C8000 (in particular).

If the budget and requirement is same then it makes sense.Spending 1.10 lakhs for buying a 50" set does not make sense, when i can add some more money to get a 55",58" or 60" sets.
And the requirement is of a bigger set here.As there is no comparison between 50" set as it is small when compared with a 55" or above.

yes if pricing is same and you are looking for a similar size set in the same range like 42" or 50" then it makes sense to buy Pana if it has 3 year warranty. But here i feel he is interested in buying 55" or higher size set, so priority should be given to screen size and performance rather than warranty here.

Also i don't think Pana is offering 3 years warranty anymore, they have gone silent no ads or noise on the same these days.
