Just ordered Line Magnetic 755 Field Coil Speakers & Amp.

Last weekend, I had a 6 hours extensive audition at ARN Systems, Bangalore.

The Line Magnetic 755 Field Coil Speakers are a field coil remake of the revered Western Electric 755A. They have a cult following and a recent Stereophile article rated some experts as saying that this is the best wide band driver ever made!!

The speakers had only about an hour on them when I went in to audition them in the morning and they drew me in to the music every single time I changed tracks and sat down for a listen.
I don't know what Field Coil Speakers are doing to let things sound as real as they do but it's a great execution!.
I consider LM one of the best intimate loud speakers I have ever heard in my short journey. Very coherent, nuanced and musical from top to bottom.

By the end of the day, the few hours of play time changed the speaker phenomenally. I initially missed the low and high that I was used to, but by the end of the session, it was all there.

Sorry, I can't be too comprehensive now as the audition was on just-out-of-the-box speakers and amps, and the musical involvement was so high that I could not register individual aspects of sound like scale, imaging & sound stage.

I have listened to Line Magnetic 755 speakers on different amps from Line Magnetic itself as well as Leben CS 600. I listened to various different genres of music (except Western classical).
I have shortlisted Line Magnetic 219 IA 845 SET Dual Mono amp & LM 210 IA 300B amp and I plan to choose one of them.

Apart from the audition, I got an opportunity to meet our FM Square wave and enjoy music for few hours.

I will post my comprehensive views after couple of months of listening.

Fantastic Sameer, there are a very few people who would relate to what you tried to explain "the musical involvement was so high that I could not register individual aspects of sound like scale, imaging & sound stage". In fact, the ultimate musical experience is not listening to the system at all, but having the system immerse you in the music in all its detail and emotion with no effort on your part at all.

I wanted to ask you if Lyrita EL84 will be able to drive the Field Coil Speakers effectively.

On reading more, seperate variable DC power supply to feed into these speakers to create a magnetic field. Very intriguing stuff.

Great buy Sameer. That combination is a very intimate music maker. Pure sound. It was nice meeting you.

I was just going to ask Sameer if you two were at the audition together!
Congratulations on a great buy! What happens to the Symphonic Line now?

Thank you. I think LM Mini 218 (EL 84) is compatible because Line Magnetc LM 210(8W 300B) was driving LM 755s effortlessly. Contact ARN Sridhar for correct information.

LM makes a mini EL84 amp that puts out only 3W and while I haven't tried it, a dealer who has done this has posted it on his blog saying that it performs reasonably well. This speaker doesn't require much wattage to make it sing - as Sameer said, the 8W 300B amp was more than sufficient.

cheers

Sameer could you tell us a little bit more about these amps? They look fantastic.
Unfortunately not a lot of information to be found on Line Magnetic online.

Hi Nikhil, Prem furnished relevant Line magnetic links.
I need couple of months time to post my observations.

Cheers

Hi Nikhil, a lot of Line Magnetics products are replicas of original WE products. I am not sure about the amps though. Most of the drivers are, with the exception of the 755. The original 755 is not field coil. The LM one is.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
