Hello people,

I have a choice of some record players and need help choosing from them,

1. Denon SL200
2. Technics SLQ2
3. Technics SLB2
4. Sony PS 11
5. Sony PST 22

All players are in mint condition, although with original cartridges; so will need to replace them but not immediately.
All players are between 4500 to 6000 bucks, so thats really is not an issue.

I also have an offer for an audiotechnica cartridge(brand new) for about 1500 bucks. If i dont take it, i can reduce it from the player's price.
The dealer seems keen on the Sony players and personally i liked the Denon, thought it had a very classy look.

There are many other players available, so if there are anything else i should like for please let me know, although i want to select from the above list....

thanks in advance.

hey looks interesting. i am in chennai very soon maybe i can also see those and pick one (already have one but the love of it is driving me towards it)

Hi,
Buy Technics Sl-Q2 if in a good shape, its a quarts drive TT.Technics known for their good DD player so you can skip SL B2.SLQ2 weighs 7kg and a good entry level player.
I never read anything about this Denon TT so can't comment. Can you tell me which AT cartridge is this?

Regards,
Sachin

Hi Sachin,

The AT cartridge model no is AT91E, it is brand new.

and thanks for your recommendation. How good are the Sony's btw? they had pitch control which some other players did not have.

To be honest this is the first Denon TT i have come across, and it looks pretty good, its quite recent and apparently sells in stores now.

@denzong -
Sure PM me when you are in Chennai and i will guide you to the place. Maybe i can use you as a a potential customer and bargain a bit on my player's price. :D

Hi,
AT91E(if new) is a good cartridge for this price. Both Sony's are looking like bottom line TTs of Sony, not sure though. You can check by its built quality like weight, tonearm etc.You can skip Denon if it is a recent Dp-200.

Sachin

Friend,

Can you please tell the dealer's name as I am also looking for an used TT.

Thanking you,
Sincerely,

pksnathan

The AT91E is a pretty decent cartridge from all that I have heard of it in the last month. Moreover I would suggest you go there and check out the condition of all the TTs. Check the speeds, the motion of the tonearm and basic appearance. I own a Denon vintage and can tell you that it is a fine machine. With vintage audio, I would suggest it would make more sense to pick up a cleaner less renowned model, rather than picking up a not so clean benchmark model. Even the okayish models back then kick some modern day equipment's behind. Guessing by the description of the stuff that is available to you, I think it is Mr. Sasi/Mr.Kamesh in Chennai who are offering you these choices. Decent guys they are from whatever little I have interacted with them. Good luck with your hunt Charanbee.

So let's have almost a chennai meet. Will confirm the date by coming tuesday

Done!

Your right it is Mr. Sasi :)
Thanks for your input @everyone. Will let you know what i bought on monday.
Cheers

The SL-B2 is an excellent table. I have the same and it sounds far better than the entry level project tables. If you can pick it up within 4-5k and its in good condition, its a nice deal. Be on a lookout for cable issues. The captive lead on the table is of pathetic quality and is best replaced.

Try pairing it with a shure m97xe or a v15. This particular arm seems to love shures.

+1 most of vintage Technics are better than today's players.Technics SLB2 is an excellent entry level player but Sl-Q2 is little better IMHO.You should replace interconnect cables in any case to low capacitance video cables, as stock leads of vintage tables are of high capacitance.

Any idea how the shure m97 compares to AT91E?

How exactly do you say the SLQ2 is better? because it is direct drive?
And is there anyway i can buy these low capacitance cables and wires online?

Hi charanbee,

It is not fair to campare the two. I have used them both, the AT-91 is slightly bigger stylus, picks up surface noise when used with dusty LPs. On the other hand the Shure is a Audiophile stuff, it plays with less noise, HF is slightly rolled off, but still it is very revealing cart, plays good mid-freq, bass is well defined, treble adequate, if properly set-up. I use the latter for Conversion purpose, it tracks very well. But a person used to AT-91, will find the Shure a bit dull sounding at first. But once it is burned in, after properly set-up it is a very good cart and very gentle on your records, as it needs just 1.25g tracking weight.

Hope this helps,

N.Murali

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
