Hi Guys,

I am here to talk to you intelligent guys about the cost of owning modern telivisions like LCD, PLASMA etc..We go out and buy best of stuff within our budget - sometimes just exceeding it, lets say above 30K for 32inch LCD, which give us a warranty for a year ...well what after that??!!..do these tvs' last without problem or are there some niggles here and there. Well, people pray and pray hard that the niggles don't show up soon coz one niggle can cost you anywhere between 5-10K rupees!! remember the good old CRT days when tvs' use to last for century's and a niggle here and there would not cost as high. Lets not forget it takes 1K extra to service these devices.

By the time LCD or plasma reaches its life you would have spend twice as much to keep it in running condition.

So Beware dear friends!

What is the 'good old CRT' days you are talking about?
Factor in inflation and CRTs will seem rediculously costly. They became cheaper only after the LCDs were norm.

Also, what 'niggles' are you referring to? Can you give an example? If the panel goes, you will have to pay 50%, (70% in CRTs) other than that, what are the niggles?

What is 'extra 1k to service' this devices? Costs now are atleast 5 times as CRT days. You seem to be in the past still.

Well....when its become a norm to blame all on inflation, therefore I think you are on the right tract by suggesting the same, however I still don't think servicing a burnt out IC (niggles) or whatever it is, should cost 5K or so.
By the way most of the CRT's that i have seen had lasted centurys' and I keep hearing about LCD panels going bust in the first year of purchase, with complete loss, can u imagine your 50K purchase becoming 0 in one year, only good for plastic recycle or off-course buy a new panel for 50% the cost (don't you think that's huge).
I am trying to make people aware of the cost of maintaining these tvs' and they should factor in this aspect when they go out to purchase one.

I think this hubla about the cost being 5 times as CRT days is misleading, coz technological progress is supposed to bring down costs after the initial impact, If costs are so high then how are these supremely expensive LCD selling for 40% less with advant of LEDs'.
Anyway it just seems so ridiculously outrageous that any repair in an LCD costs not less than 5K.

Thanks for giving your viewpoint!

True. It might cost more in numbers. But in value, it costs pretty much the same ;)

Not that I prescribe the CRT era over LCDs coz lcd do save on something thats in premium i.e. space, rest I don't think there is any value added if I still keep hearing that CRT displays the best image;-)

Modern CRT go kaput just as fast as moderm flat panel tvs.Manufactures nowdays no longer want their device to last for nearly a decade.

As for as CRT they are good in some ways, but for the most part todays tvs both lcd and plasma are superior.

CRT have the worst perceived real world contrast, with even the slightest light hitting them, robs them their contrast.Other issues like Flickering, eye strain, geometry issues etc all keeps adding against them.

Thanks Adder, for elucidating on CRT shortcomings! Come to think of it - eye strain and geometry does seem to be huge negative.

What good old crt days. I got sansui 21 inch crt for 14k in 2003. I could buy 25 gms of gold for 14k at that time. Now compare this. 25 gms of gold is 65k. So i paid 65k for a 21 inch crt. Now 22 inch lcd costs 10k which is worth 4 gms of gold:ohyeah:. So what is good old crt days????

That is what I was trying to tell him wrt inflation and he won't agree.

If you take out your salary increment component and purchasing power from the discussion, you are discussing nothing.

Yeah, but would you spend every evening of the last 8 years of your life watching the same gold placed on a table? ;)

1. The first commercially manufactured CRT TV is still far away from becoming a century old
2. The first commercially manufactured LCD TV is yet to reach its end of the life so we can't really calculate the costs as you did
3. Modern Flat Panel TVs (of good brands) are extremely reliable
4. Nobody would need them to last more than 10 years given the rapid evolution of technology.
5. LCD going bust in the first year- please look up 'warranty'
6. LCD servicing cost will come down to CRT range very soon and it is manpower cost which is raising, not expertise cost
7. I bought a Sharp 21 CTV for Rs. 17500 and I still think it was tooo much

Right said

Also compare one thing

Cost of the TV vs average salary at that time...in CRT days people were spending N months salary on CRT ......

also consider the area -- we were buying 21 ( before that 20 Inch) crt s with lesser area -area was wassted in black stripe.

38 Inch crts was was super luxury and biggest available were 40 Inches ( any proof on net for biggest size?)

Now 50 Inches plasmas are readily available and very very affordable...:ohyeah::ohyeah:

BTW I was also wondering century old CRTS and actually checked wiki..btw I worked in TV brands for some time:rolleyes::rolleyes::cool:
