Making baby steps into Hi-fi

Nice progress! I was looking to get a recliner myself!

Stay tuned for some updates on my thread as well. The new room is well on it's way :)

Nice Recliner Hydra. But I guess it arrived quite early, before the demands of your other girlfried are met, like the AVR, sub, centre etc.. But yes, this recliner will satisfy both of your girlfriends :ohyeah:

Hi Hydra,

Nice recliner man. How much did it cost? Btw, if anyone nearer to you has Squeezebox Touch, can you give me your impression how SBT+RegaDac combo sounds? I've read people(squeezebox forums) swearing on this combo outclassing Rega Apollo CDP but I need an apnawaala's impression on the combo you see;)

Have fun brother.
Kevian

hydra, the samsung 40d550 is a sweet deal! Good pq and an excellent feature suite. That recliner sure looks comfy!
I hope you have not moved the refrigerator too far!

Thanks, Bluu! Good to know your room is shaping up well! Will look forward to the updates. :)

Thanks, Santy! Heh heh, yup, I'd originally planned the recliner as the last step, right after the speaker, amp, power conditioning and cable upgrades. Even the TV wasn't really planned, but it just happened. As they say, the best laid plans of men and mice... But then it's all good :)

I actually have no plans for any upgrades along the lines of AVR/Sub/Center/Surround etc. My setup will always be a true-blue 2-channel setup. I'm quite happy with watching movies this way, and I'd rather spend all future upgrade money towards building a good 2-channel setup. This is all the movie GF is going to get. 'She' gets most of my time, and the music GF gets most of my money :P

Thanks, Kevian! It came to bit under 18K. I don't know of anybody hereabouts who uses an SB Touch, sorry. I'd seen the comparisons to the Apollo in other contexts (= transports) too! Unfortunately, I've not been able to listen to an Apollo either :( But I can say the DAC sounds bloody awesome to me in my setup. And not to boast, but I've come away from many listening sessions with other equipment (quite a bit more expensive than mine) with a sense of pride of how good my setup sounds in terms of sound stage, imaging and involvement. I'm pretty certain the DAC has a LOT to do with that. :)

Thanks, Titus! The difference in PQ (improvement) over my old Series 3 32" Sammy is like night and day. I didn't think there would be so much improvement. Even SD content looks really good! I've not really started messing around with all the features yet, but I look forward to having a lot of fun trying them all out. :)

Yup, the recliner is really comfy. I barely got out of it this sunday: Watched 4 movies in a row and listened to a whole lot of music! :p

The refrigerator is outta the building! Long story, but it's all good. I barely used it anyway. It was being used for my Mom's "offsite" vegetable storage.

Thats what I would like my listening room to look like. May be a few accoustic panels would improve the music even further.:D
Now that I've poisoned your mind......

Looking good and comfy Hydra. Congratulations.

LOL, about the two girlfriends - movies and music. I married one (movies) and the other (music) is the mistress :ohyeah:

Thank you, Santosh! Yep, somewhere down the line a choice has to be made, one way or the other. But then, we do want to have the cake and eat it too :p

Recliner

Hydra,

Congratulations for a great recliner.

You are right that a recliner can be a marvel for watching movies and listening music, with much more benefit while watching movies.

A recliner have health benefits too.

It is a great idea to get rid of a few things from your entertainment room, sooner then later it may end up as a dedicated room for movies and music.

V.

I bought myself a Samsung 40D550 and a Recliner.

I also got rid of the Refrigerator and a couple of other bits of furniture from the room. The recliner has substantially improved the listening experience! :)

if your bookshelf's are back ported (and even if they are not) you need corner traps right behind your speakers...

Yup. I'm sure bass traps in the corners behind the speakers will help a lot.

I need to figure out a way of building them in such a way that they are not fastened/fixed to the walls, but are still effective enough. The left corner is a door, opening into my bedroom, so I have to keep that in mind also. I've been thinking of getting two sheets of foam and rolling them up to form two tight cylinders, and then using the cylinders as the bass traps.

Unfortunately the room is somewhat small -- it is in trapezoidal shape and it is narrower behind the speakers -- and there isn't a lot of room to work with. I'll figure out a way soon enough :)

Thank you, kittu! :)

To ID the first reflection points:

1) Sit in your listening chair.
2) Have somebody slide a mirror (preferably at the height at which the tweeters are) along each side wall.
3) The position on the wall where you can see the speaker in the mirror (while sitting in your listening chair) is the first reflection point.

4) Plot reflection points for both tweeters on each wall
5) Plot the first reflection points for ceiling and floor as well

Well Done Hydra, very well made even from an aesthetics point of view. Please share some W.I.P pics as well.
What you have mentioned is correct. I have added a few points in bold ^.

PS: I saw your other thread first, sorry for cross posting.

Thanks, Santhosh! :)

I unfortunately don't have any WIP pics (except for the bare board before I painted it). I did the pasting of the panels in a bit of a rush yesterday night. Should have clicked some pics in between :(

If the corner is having doors, keep it open while listening and use a tri-trap for the top corner of that room, you dont need to make any full bass trap for that corner.

Please post a rough floor plan of the room.
