Hi All,

My Marantz PM-6007 seem to have a faulty right channel. I noticed it since last week. I took it to my dealer but he was unable to put his finger to it.However i have made my family members and friends to listen to it without telling them as to which side is bad. All seem to pick out the right channel without much effort.Steps followed to find out the issue:-

1.Swapped the right and left speakers.(Found that now the other speaker connected to rt channel has the issue)

2.Swapped out the cables.(similar issue persists)

3.Changed the connectors(same issue persists)

4.Tried with my headphones connected. The issue exists but you have to strain to find it(Its not as evident as the speakers)

4.Finally swapped the rt and left channels and still people could effortlessly point to the speaker with a veiled sound.I wouldnt call it too low but a bit muffled or as if a think silk cloth has descended over the speaker. Its not just the slight low volume but the openness thats missing.

I am in Kerala(Kollam). And the authorized people here are a joke. My dealer here says to send it to Mumbai. Is there any good service center in Kerala than MZ audio where i can get this fixed?Thing is apart from the dealer every person i made it listen here could pick the difference without even telling them. And hence am afraid if the mumbai MZ guys would be able to.Please advice as to what i should do

Also a question could moisture cause this as it had not been used for say 5 months but since am here i have been using it since august????

Use a good quality contact cleaner spray to clean the volume pot first.
There are great number of videos on YouTube regarding the same.

well i am not that good at doing these stuff and am also scared that i will screw up something which i will regret later.
Hence is there any good repair guy in kerala who can fix this?

I got Mr Johny to fix the issue.it was a volume pot issue.Had to get it replaced for 6200Rs.Everything else looks fine. Also got the toslink ports fixed.

Got the amp back and connected at my home. The issue now has worsened.

Issue:-

  • Play the song via any source
  • The right channel now seems to be dead.If i tilt the balance towards right with the volume at 9 o clock level then a very feeble sound can be heard from the right speaker.
  • Now start increasing the volume. At around 11-12 o clock level theres a "zrrrr" sound and the volume level of the song in the right speaker becomes a bit more pronounced.
  • Now increase more.At about 2 o clock level theres another "zrr" and some other sound and then the volume is normal. After this both teh speakers at any volume can be played for a whole listening session.
  • Switch off and come back after say 2-3 hrs. Repeat the above again.

What all tried:

Mr johnny over video call guided me to open it up and press the board(left side) connected to the vol pot a bit.It solves the problem then and there. But after switching off and 2-3 hrs later same issue repeats.

Please note i did trying by swapping the speakers and wires. They are not the issue.

Has anyone seen such an issue and to everybody here can anyone understand what this is.Am clearly at a loss.

Seems Mr Johnny left a dry solder when he replaced the volume pot.

Theres one more update. The opamps were replaced with the LM4562.I feel it may have made the Marantz sound a bit too analytical for my taste.
It seems the instruments are taking the front seat and the voice kind of gets recessed unless we are in sound direct mode. The warm sound of marantz is gone and its like more of now in the Yamaha territory when coupled with the polk speakers.

And why was it done ? Did you ask for them to be replaced ??

Well he suggested them and said that if i choose to he can remove them.He said the sound would be more open and analytical.Although later hearing the price of the op-amps he infact forced me not to change it but i had already been bitten by the audio bug.I was hell bent on listening to the change in sound. But it seems i should have stayed with the marantz op-amps it seems.Only if we cud travel back in time.

Get the opamps reverted back . I am sure the original ones must be either with you or him. You can also get the dry solder checked up. I could have helped but am based at quite a distance from your place of stay. If you are okay with shipping the amp to my place , get in touch will try to do the needful.

Update:-
I took it to him yesterday. He did some soldering on the pins to make it thicker so that it doesnt come loose from the jack it is connected to.Now the sound has reverted back.Yet the sound is base heavy and the songs recessed a bit.But not as bad as before.i thought i will keep this and see how it is.He didnt give back the opamps and i didnt ask either.

Good to know Sir. But would advice you to collect the opamps...however your call Sir.

why do you say so.Is it necessary.Am just trying to understand the reason.A quetion..wouldnt it have gone back once removed from the board
Sir, first of all any technician replacing any parts is supposed to show and hand over the replaced parts good or bad. This is good business ethics. He has no business keeping back the removed opamps until and unless he wants to install it in someone else's amp and charge him a hefty amount.

Secondly if removed from the board and done carefully the opamps will never go bad.

It looks like you got scammed. Why out of the blue did he suggest you to change the op-amps? In doing so you have handed over perfectly genuine op-amps sourced by Marantz. There are plenty of counterfeit op-amps in the market (all produced in China). I wouldn't be surprised that what you have now is a counterfeit op-amp. You yourself feel that the sound is recessed. Most likely the result of a counterfeit. What did he charge you for the opamp? An original TI one will cost around Rs 250. Even if you ask the guy to handover the original op-amps now, it is possible you get handed fake ones again. But you should try to get them back because what was done with you is unethical.

Hi
Could you make an attempt to use Deoxit Red and spray on contacts .
Generally must such issues disappear .
Scratchy sound ,reduced volume etc .
Thanks

I sourced the op-amp myself from RS components and delivered it to him.7 op-amps cost me 5130Rs(each 732 rs).Am not sure if what RS components sold me is fake.RS.jpg

No. That will not be fake as RS is a trustworthy site. It would cost that much since you are not buying in bulk. Try to get the original op-amp
