My DIY Altec Lansing A7 - Voice of the Theater

They look the right fit for Altecs..

That's a fantastic build, I'm sure it's glorious sounding as well. Congrats!
Thanks Anil and gruby. It is sounding pretty good and am happy with the way it is turning out :)

Hi,

Santosh, have you had the time to try out the Russian Pio capacitors?

Regards
Rajiv
Rajiv,
I tried the PIO caps out only today as I have been working on the Pass B1 buffer pre since I am letting my current ADCOM pre.

Initial impressions are very good. Overall sound has become warmer by some extent. The treble has become more smoother and has a nice sheen to it. Voices in general are sounding a bit more open while female voices are sounding more lush now. Thanks for recommending these to me :)

I know it's pretty much pointless but would you be able to upload a small video clip of these beauties in action. Ofcourse, if and when you have a few minutes to spare...

No worries Gruby. It is something I have been wanting to do. I will post a video soon.

I made a few changes/tweaks to the system over the weekend and these have improved the sound by a fair margin. Changes include:

Analog Source changed from Pioneer PL-15 to Project Xperience-II. The Ortofon Rondo Red's magic has worked on the Altecs. CDP continues to be the Marantz CD-94.

Amplification changed from NAD to ADCOM power (60W per ch @8) and pre. The ADCOM pre has more 3 dimensionality compared to the NAD 1020i.

Changed the angle of the HF horn to point downwards towards the listener. Added some absorptive material (Anutone Synth) in front of the HF driver to prevent any reflections off the cabinet coming immediately out of the horn.

Also, the Paper In Oil Capacitors have had over 30 hours on them and have opened up (?).

Since I made too many changes in one go (not a good idea), I am left guessing what changed what ...lol. Doesn't matter since I love the way it is sounding:ohyeah:

Overall, there is more lushness and mids are sounding more full-bodied. The highs are a lot more airy, relaxed and smooth - very tube like. Imaging and focus have improved quite a bit. There is more heft in the bass possibly due to the high current of the ADCOM. I am considering keeping the ADCOMs (they have been put up for sale) until I finalize my tube amp.

I still believe your speakers require a much better preamp/amp and a better turntable/cartridge than what you are using today. Marantz CDP is good.

All you need is some tube gear to complete the magic!
Thanks Titus. Next month, I will be trying out Stevieboy's Lyrita DHT pre and 2A3 amp soon and also a Leben from Sridhar.

Absolutely agree Anil. I am working on it...slowly but surely.

Hi Santhosh,
you can also try HT MC PS (DIY moving coil PS)which I sent you.Your review will be helpful as I don't have MC cart to test it.

Sachin

Sure Sachin, managed to make a simple aluminium enclosure for my MC phonostage and the MM phonostage that I am building for hydra last weekend. Still needs a bit of filing of rough edges to get the fit and finish. Will upload and post pics this weekend. Even I am looking forward to compare it with the Lehmann Audio Black Cube.

Hey Santhosh, that's news! When did it happen?
It was always there, but part of another system, the same one you listened to on your visit (inside the listening room) :). Just moved it here to try. The Pioneer PL-15 will go to the other room.

The turntable has been taken care off ;) just awaiting pickup by Santosh.

Thanks Rajiv. The Lenco L75 will be another step towards making this an almost vintage system. Theme I had in mind for this system was Vintage - Vintage Speakers, Tube amps, Vintage TT with a classic cart like the Ortofon SPU, Denon DL-103 or Shure V-15.

Hi Santhosh

How about also adding a vintage girlfriend and a vintage malt to complete the theme?

Prem, a SM always enhances the listening experince but haven't had much luck with women when it comes to music, so most of the listening happens in the wee hours of the morning or when the wife is away :ohyeah:.

Vintage malt is usually in stock, latest addition being a Laphroaig Quarter Cask that has been earmarked for a FM's visit (since he introduced me to the drink). As for the vintage girlfriend part, can't do much... will grow old (with the wife) listening to the Vintage system :).
