My DIY Altec Lansing A7 - Voice of the Theater

Good news all around. Lenco L75, Laphroaig, Altec...Stay away from the wife part. Another few years will make you vintage anyway.

Hi,

Also planned in the same visit are a pair of large Altec 805 horns like in pic below:

Santosh,I plan to bring the horns back to Madras next week .

Would 1/2 July or the next weekend suit your travel plans?

Regards
Rajiv

Rajiv, I doubt I will be able to travel until late July, will keep you posted. Please don't bring them just yet since they occupy so much space.

That looks like an even bigger monster than your VOTT. And it's got fancy tweeters (or whatever that honeycombed thingie on the top is). Will need a small truck to bring it from Chennai, I guess:)
:) the honey-combed thingie IS the horn and together with a compression driver forms the HF unit. Sizewise, it is about the width of the VOTTs. Altec HFs go pretty low for a HF driver starting at 500Hz and up to 20k (depending on what driver is used).

Let me share my plans (Phase II) as it might be useful to anybody taking this route. The difference between the 811 horn that I have and this is the design. The 811 is a single horn (called sectoral horn) with a wide dispersion whereas the 805 is a multi-cellular horn ie., it has multiple individual horn cells and compressed sound is forced out of that many horns(8 in this case) together covering a larger area. So one can expect a wider sweetspot apart from a slight mechanical roll-off of the HF. The 805 is usually used with larger format drivers like 288 (Rajiv uses these and they are superb, especially the mids), but I read in the soundpractices article that the smaller format driver like 802-8gs (that I have) also sound very good when crossed lower ~600hz and coupled with a large horn using an adapter. Now, these adapters are all out of stock now and super-expensive on ebay, I plan to make my own like in this link: Eliptrac 2"-1.4"-1" Adapter

Phase III begins whenever I manage to source Altec 288s. After listening to this for sometime, I'll work on integrating a supertweeter (the toughest part). By then I will have grown old like we have discussed in above posts .

Sure George/Sajith, originally Stevieboy and I were to do this trip. Let us make try and together.

Chennai FMs, if you have any plans for a Chennai Hi-Fi meet on the horizon, we can plan our trip around that time.

I can get Amrut Fusion for you if I come, should you want a bottle. Laphroaig from d-f might pose a problem.

Thanks George, i will take Amrut, but still i am behind Laphroiag after smelling( not tasted) in Rajiv house.

Regards
