My proposed HT in my living room - A casual discussion

I was browsing through some threads on the forum talking of selling and buying expensive equipment and my thoughts wandered to the time I got myself my first true blue stereo system. I was actually looking for a big screen TV and the biggest they had in my town was the Samsung 30 inch CRT. As I was walking out of the place after booking the TV, I heard music being played on one of the systems and it sounded quite nice. Went over to find that it was a Sony mini with a free 30 watt sub. Liked it and on a impulse, ordered for it too.

I should also probably state that I have spent quite a lot of money experimenting with a friends knowledge of DIY stuff earlier. Big sealed boxes, separate amps for sub, mid and high (which was a nightmare to balance) etc

A few years down the line, I was itching for a change. There was this one gentleman whom I knew and because of whom I got addicted to the hiss crackle and pop of Vinyl and to some of the music that I still listen and cherish. It so happened that he was also a DIY chap himself. So, when I told him that I wanted to upgrade (he did laugh when I told him of my 6 inch subwoofer) and my desire to have a box with a driver of atleast 12 inches, he gave me a look which told me that this was the beginning of my troubles. Two weeks down the line he calls me up and tells me that he has a speaker setup for sale but it houses a 10 inch driver and that it will cost me 9000 rupees. I told him that I would love to have it.

Now, the reason why I went on this rant.

He was in the business of creating and selling speakers. But, when I told him of my desire to buy, he asked me what my financial position was !!! He asked me if I could afford a speaker costing 9000 rupees. He sternly told me that this hobby could end up making me spend a lot of money and that I will never be really be satisfied with what I have !!!!

I very respectfully acknowledge this gentleman's contribution to my AV and music journey.

His speakers which has given me more than a decade of listening pleasure.

Sane advice indeed! :D Sometimes I wish I could go back to just having a HTIB and stop reading all these forums. Will save me a ton of money, not to mention time, effort and endless hunt of the next upgrade. ;)

I was in B'lore recently visiting my Sis-in-law and her husband. My co-brother, gracious host that he is, gave me a free hand to fiddle with his Onkyo-TX SR-608 powering ELAC FS-57 and matching sorrounds, centre and sub.

His living room layout is very similar to mine although his placement was a bit different as he had placed the speakers on the long wall of the L shape with space to the left and right of the speakers but very close to the back wall. The speakers have 2 rear ports.

ELAC is a reputed German brand and I have read good reviews of FS-57 on the net. I was a bit disappointed with what I heard though. The upper frequencies and the mids were quite smooth compared to my speakers but the lower mid/bass was nowhere near what I would want from my floor standing speakers. Maybe it was the room. I was not able to satisfactorily integrate the sub to the floorstands either. In stereo mode with the sub on, the depth was output by the sub but it sounded like it was directional even with the volume of the sub carefully adjusted to be just a bit over the fronts. Crossovers set at 80hz and all speakers set to small.

The time spent with this system has now convinced me that the Q700's or the Q900's might not be a overkill for my room. I don't think I would like a bookshelf + sub combo for music.

Don't get me wrong. I don't like bass heavy speakers. I would like the speakers to output bass recorded in the music though. The KEF's are not know to be bassy speakers.

Goes to prove once again that auditioning is very important before deciding on what to buy.

I have narrowed down on the denon 3312 or such, a 64" plasma TV from Samsung or similar but I am finding it difficult to choose a right speaker for my living room. Although I have narrowed down on the brand (KEF) that I like, choosing between the models is proving to be harder than I thought.

This is how I will be going about it.

1. I take my existing speakers / amp to the flat after it is furnished and see how it interacts with the room. The advantage being, I have been listening to these speakers for over 10 years and I know how they sound.

2. Buy the Q500's, listen to it for an extended period of time over a period of which I should be able to decide if it serves my needs or not. If not, relegate them to the bedroom and get the Q700's or the Q900's.

The difficult part about choosing speakers is that, I feel that is what you finally hear in the chain. I have gone through threads in other forums where members have purchased a Q700 only to exchange it for a Q900 because they wanted to know what the 8" drivers and the bigger tweeter would offer in terms of improved clarity in the mid-range and the highs. Something that I too am keen to experience.

The low frequencies can always be controlled with the AVR but then, my wife who is a lot more saner than I am did wonder why I would want to spend money on a bigger speaker only to end up curtailing its output !!!

I think it is not a good idea to buy a 64" television keeping in mind the kind of programmes which are around and importantly about 30% of the content is the forced advertisements on us.

If you watch movies regularly then projector is the way to go forward. I have used a projector lift, and it is too great a thing, complete value for money.

To plan the false ceiling is not going to be a easy job, to get a full and proper idea you must visit some of the forum member who has such a set up. Before you carry out this exercise you need to be sure that you need a projector in due course otherwise it will never be worth the effort.

I am pushing my budget with the Samsung 64" which should be around 2 Lakh or so. Panasonic 65" if I am not mistaken, is a lakh more than that and will be over my budget.

I am thinking of something like what is demonstrated in the link given below for the projector. I have no idea how much it will cost me or if I can get it done in a small town like Mangalore. These are provisions for the future really. Something that I need to tell my Interior Designer to plan for when designing the POP false ceiling. :)

Hello Vinay,

Any specific points that I need to keep in mind if I am going to install a projector and POP. I will be going in for a projector at a future date. One of my main requirements is that the projector and screen should be out of view when not in use.

I am a simple man who gets entertained quite easily. I am know to laugh out loud while watching Tom and Jerry as much as when I watch Kelsey Grammer and co. Watching Top Gear always brings a smile to my face. So, I have no complaints about the programs telecast by Reliance Digital. In fact, I am actually looking forward to watching Jeff Beck playing alongside Eric Claption on iConcerts on a 64" screen.

The ads too entertain me on occasions. I find Abhishek Bachchan going 'Baby before 3G' hilarious.

I have set my viewing standards low. It has it's advantages. :)

Regards,

Sunil

Sunil,

You will have to make provisions now itself for wiring, cabling, switches, etc for the projector + audio and video gear. This is some what a complicated job, to get a full fledged idea, you will have to importantly visit someone who has a projector and screen set up.

I have seen a few lifts with ceiling tiles, but have not come across a lift based with POP ceiling. If you will see the video of my Mini Theatre, you will get a clear idea and alternatively you can visit some forum member who has such a lift, which i doubt one has or the seller of a lift can answer this POP possibility.

I can tell you that if the projector is visible even when not in use, will still add very good decor to the room.

Vinay,

One of the problems that I could have is with the height of my living room. My room is 9 1/2 feet high. A projector lift box would be a minimum of 1 1/2 feet in height. To hide the projector lift box, the POP will have to be at a level of 8 feet from the floor. ( It is said that ideally a minimum of 9 feet height should be made available below the surface of the false ceiling.) The projector would probably drop down to a further one feet bringing the projector to project at a height of 7 feet. If I want a screen size of 110" diagonal, the height of the screen would be around 4' 6" at a throw distance of 13 feet. So, if the top of the screen is at around 6' 6" from the floor so that it is below the projector which is at a height of 7 feet, the bottom of the screen will be 2' from the floor.

Is this a plausible setup ?

The length of the room is not a problem. My living room after a few changes is now 26.3 feet in length.

Sunil

I stronlgy agree with an earlier post that it's well worth wiring the house now -do it for all rooms where you think a connection may be needed-better to be safe than sorry. I( sorry my contractor!) did it for some but not all rooms and now feel that was a mistake.

My Interior Designer has asked me to submit my lighting and HT points including speaker points for concealed cabling options as he wants to place them in the drawings. I have asked him to give me a few days as I have not yet decided on my bedroom setup. I find it amusing that I just might end up with a stereo setup (at a much later date) with bookshelf speakers and a 2 channel amplifier in the bedroom, as I would not want a surround sound setup here. More on that later.

As things stand, my living room AV setup is now envisaged as under. (It makes it that much easier to decide on this considering my future plans for a stereo setup in the bedroom )

1. Denon 3312
2. KEF Q500
3. KEF Q200c Centre
4. KEF T101 surrounds. (These are said to blend quite well with the Q's)
5. KEF Q400b Sub.

From what I have read, the KEF Q400b isn't a sub that will shake my POP loose from the ceiling (which is a good thing really, as I don't want to disturb my neighbors too much) but integrates quite well with the rest of the Q's.

All these plans when I am still a year and a half away from actually setting my system up. *Sigh*

I will have to decide the subwoofer placement right now as it needs to be given to the builder for wiring and points. I have decided on two positions. One, close to the two front towers and one close to the seating. 3312 supports 2 subs so both could also be considered. Both the subs will be placed on the long wall with a bookshelf to separate the two.

Comments and suggestions are more than welcome. :)

if you have to setup your system 1.5 yrs from now, you may consider buying AVR then instead of now. unless you have already purchased.

I have not purchased anything yet, Anm. Will do the purchasing only after my flat is completed.

Sunil,

The lift can be paused/set at different heights.

There are projectors which require bigger room lengths to give more screen beam. I think in most cases from a 12 feet or so, it can give a screen image of 100/120 inches diagonally.

In my case my room height is 9 feet, the projector lift fits well and is set at 14 feet, it can give easily a screen image of 110 Inches diagonally, and needless to say that placing the accousitc tiles also was not a problem.

While my other projector can beam about 85 inches, from a mere 5 feet.

My congratulations for the escalation of room length to a rare whooping 26.3 feet.

Lift

During the making of my Mini Theatre i had got a quote from Rs.30,000/- right up to Rs.75,000/-.

The cost of lift will wary based on the weight of projector and quality offered.

However at end of the day with other expenses involved as threaded elsewhere, the cost will past over a lac rupees for the lift.

V.

how much would a lift cost?

Vinay,

Like you mentioned in one of your earlier posts, a projector installed without a lift, just below the POP false ceiling will not look out of place as shown in one of ANM's posts. I will install a projector with or without a lift if and only if my budget/finances will accomodate one either on the completion of the flat or at a future date. My intention is to make necessary provisions for it.

Your suggestions are always appreciated. :)

Regards,

Sunil
