My proposed HT in my living room - A casual discussion

Could someone help me out with the connectivity options available to connect a Projector to the rest of the system.

Am thinking as follows:

Blue ray player to AV receiver (HDMI)
Reliance HD STB to AV receiver (HDMI)
AV receiver to TV (Uplcaled port ?) (HDMI)
AV receiver to Projector (HDMI)

I would say there is practical problem using above bold connection always. Instead of connecting as above you can think of TV with ARC (Audio Return Channel) and connect your HD STB directly to your TV. If there is no ARC in TV you can use Optical connection back to AVR.

For watching general TV you always cannot switch on AVR. For you it may be OK but for other family members it will be problem. I faced this issue at home so this my 2 cents.

Thanks, anujmishra, for pointing that out. Will rethink the connections. :)

Alternating between Vocal smooth jazz ,classical crossovers (Romantica) and smooth jazz on sky.fm via XBMC from my wife's laptop connected to the TV and playing through the Topping TP60 and Quad.

Enjoying the music :)

I have received the Optimus B speaker stand from FM Magma and the Quads are looking quite nice on it.

Kudos to Magma for taking the time and effort to provide beautifully constructed, well designed stands at a very reasonable cost. :)

Two years since I started this thread and I am nowhere close to the Home Theatre dream

I have finally moved into my new apartment. I am posting some pics. Please do suggest improvements to the sound of my entry level music system.

Distance from speakers to back wall : 21 inches
Distance of right speaker from right side wall : 9 inches.

The sound:

Very nice. I was expecting echo, bass boom etc due to the position of the speakers but none of that. I have tried a few different placements for critical listening but it did not change the quality of sound to a great extent and I am still not experienced enough to recognise soundstage etc. This setup was never sounding this good in my house. One of the reasons for the improvement could be because the flat is very silent especially after 8 at night. I hardly feel the need to turn up the volume above the 10 o'Clock position which is a good thing because distortion sets in early with the Topping.

Instruments, vocals sound absolutely superb to my ears. The quads are constructed quite well for their price and the box does not add any noticeable distortion to the sound at all.

The pictures:

1. AV Setup from the seating area. A bit too far but can be adjusted for critical viewing/listening. The hall is 26.3 by 10. So I am a bit curious to know if sitting at the half way mark for music is a good idea as I have read about nulls at the half way mark.
2. A view from the dining to show the space behind the speakers.
3. The dining. A lot of free space to the left of the left speaker which I was worried would have a negative effect on the sound.
4. The seating as seen from the AV area. The blackout curtains are an absolute must. Without them drawn, the TV is not watchable during the day.
5. Finally, a closeup of the the messy AV area. I need to do some cable management.

I thank all the members of Hifivision whose contribution has enabled me to appreciate sound and music better.

Soundstage. Thought I would give it a try. Ironically, I don't think that I would be able to place instruments if I were to sit in front of a live orchestra, old age and all but audiophile pursuits are fun so I though I will give it a go.

Two pics, both with speakers pulled into the hall, one with a seating close to the triangle, one seated on the sofa.

The chair was a bit too high. The sofa a better place though outside the triangle.

The Music : Golden Voices 101
1. Lanan Lang - schumann: 7 Traumerei Kinderszennen - Music made popular by one of the garment ads I don't remember which. Piano sounds absolutely gorgeous.
2. Andre Rieu : Godfather Waltz Voilen simply stirs my soul.
3. Chris Botti - Caruso - Ah, the lovely Sax
4. Aled Jones - Angel - Voice dead center - Seems to just float in the middle. Could be the speakers, could be the rum, either way, money well spent.

among many others.

Of course, all these antics can only be tried when the good lady of the house is away tending to our 5 month old son who btw listens intently when I sing 'Jack and Jill' off key. Indications of a budding audiophile ? I hope not !!

Latest addition - Velodyne EQ-Max 15 sub. Of the few subs I have heard, I rate this one the best. Plays loud without distortion. Blends nicely with music too if volume levels are correctly adjusted. Overall completely satisfied with the purchase.

Another year or so has gone by and my HT dream is getting closer to realization.

Purchased the Marantz AVR7010. Putting it through it's paces.

So far, in about 3 to 4 years, I am now short of a centre, two good front speakers (I want to enjoy my music too) The quads will be doing the surround duties and then finally 4 ceiling speakers for atmos.

I have realized one thing through all this. I have lots of patience. :)
