My Sony MHC-GNZ7D's disc tray not opening

My Sony MHC-GNZ7D's 3 disc tray does not open. It shows a error message, viz., C 31 00, which is interpreted as 'The disc is not inserted correctly. Restart the system, then re-insert the disc correctly' as per operating instructions book. Somehow, I opened the outer cover and removed all the three discs. Even after the removal, it continues to show the same message. All other components are working fine except the disc tray. Kindly help me in diagnosing the fault. If it is DIY stuff, I want to do it. Otherwise, I prefer to buy a new Blu-ray player instead of spending in getting this repaired.

Strange, but true. Yesterday, when I pressed the 'open' button, instead of showing 'Please wait' message followed by the error code, the disc tray came out after murmuring for sometime. My Sony system decided to end its self-imposed hibernation. Later, I watched a DVD of Client Eastwood's Unforgiven.
