Hello everyone,

I am very new to this forum and a novice in the area of sound and music. This is one of the reason for seeking expert opinion rather than auditioning systems as I may not be able to make out the difference

I am attaching the floor plan of my living room and the placement of funiture. My budget is approx 50k but may extend a bit. After reading several posts on this forum for the last 15 days, I have shortlisted the following:

Denon AVR 1713 + Wharfedale MS 100 (I would have preferred DX1 but that is surely out of my budget. I am also conteplating the idea of buying the AVR, front and centre speaker for now and buy the other speakers later. Can the experts suggest some combinations?

One quick question about wiring the speaker - can the cables run along the electrical wiring inside the wall or should I go for external casing? I don't prefer any visible wires.

Lastly, I just want to say that this a great forum and was an eye opener for me (took me away from Bose :))

Regards,
Rikhi

1713 is very good choice..
dont want to confuse you still also consider onkyo/yamaha as well..

but instead of wharfe ms100 i will suggest whardale diamond 10...get step by step if budget is tight..get centre and fronts now..
that will be 25k to 28k...
get sub and rears later..

this idea is for not compromising qialuty..due to budget..ms100 is also fantastic at that price point....

Thank you Prosenjit for the valuable input. I am also thinking about the 2nd option that you suggested but would the experience be compromised a lot by not having a sub? The other part is that my living room is 33'x11' so should I try to cover the enitre area or just focus on the sofa seating area which is 16'x11' and exclude the area where I have the dining table.
The other advantage of not having the rears now is wiring hassles. Do you know the answer to my previous query - can the wiring run with the electrical wiring?

Regards,
Rikhi

Your room is quite large. IMO any HT with small speakers will feel inadequate after the some time. Also, in a family setup, many a times we watch TV from the dining table only. So better keep that area included. IMHO a step by step approach should be better as already suggested by Prosenjit.

Thank you ! I am thinking of starting with Denon 1713 + Diamond 10.1 front speakers for now. I will not utilize the dining area for watching movies so as of now, I am thinking of excluding it...but anyways I am not buying rears in the Phase 1 so it really doesn't matter. Should I buy the centre before the sub or it should be the other way?

I think if you have to consider the entire 33 x 11 room, you're gonna need a higher powered amp and around 200W floorstanders. Denon 1713 would be inadequate. You should be looking at a Denon 2113-2313/ Onkyo 616-717 type amp and something like Polk Audio TSi 500, Jamo S606 or equivalent from Wharfe -type speakers.

All this is going to drive up your costs significantly.

Besides:

1) IMHO, with all due respect to the folks who have suggested otherwise here, though I watch TV while having dinner, I dont necessarily appreciate 5.1 surround while having dinner. Therefore not necessarily do I turn on the HT and watch movies while having dinner.
2) Even if you include the entire 33 x 11 room, while sitting on the dining table, the sound will be distorted because there's a sofa between the speaker locations and the dining area which you cant do anything about regardless of how powerful your speakers are.

So, considering the above 2 points and the cost factor, if I were in your place, I'd have focussed on the 16 x 11 area only. The cost-to-returns ratio for considering the overall room is not very attractive from where I'm looking.

You go in for a good pair of floorstanders with a fairly low minimum frequency, and you can totally survive without a sub for a few months. I can vouch for the TSi 400s from Polk in this regard.

You'll need a bigger sub however, when the time comes. This is because bass response is dependent upon the room dimensions and topology. Unlike speakers, a sub will not sound louder if you sit nearer. A sub will interact with the walls and furniture in the room and produce a bass response. So the overall dimensions (not just the target sitting area) should be considered while going in for a sub.

If you dont want to go in for rears at this point in time, no problem - just identify the locations and lay the wires at this time. You can connect when you buy the rears a few months down the line.

Regarding speaker wires running with power wires, there's a lot of debate on the net on whether it's OK or not - I searched but couldnt get a clear answer.
So I suggest this: Just to be on the safe side, run both concealed, but not through the same conduit. Lay a separate concealed conduit for the speaker wire and another one for the power wire. Go for good quality specialized, shielded speaker wire and you should be fine. MDR Electronics - MX Electronics - Home Theater Cables & Connectors - Computers & Laptop Accessories - Pro Audio / Studio Audio Cables & Connectors - Audio Video Components & Accessories - Fiber Optic Component & Accessories - Cable TV Component & Ac
You should go for AWG 16/ 14/ 12 cables, and the shielded types (the ones which have an external white/ black sheath covering both the leads) through the walls and you should be fine.

I have a similar dimn of your hall 31x11.5 and currently using Denon 1910, 90 rms which i feel is not adequate for the size of room. You may consider 2113 / 2313 model. Also a 12 inch sub would be required to fill the complete hall. You could limit your area of 16X11 for movies but for music you need to consider the complete area. Pl relook at your decision of going for a higher output AVR.

to cover up 30 feet room imho avr is quite incapable...only consider listining area..to cover up 30 feet room very powerful..that is expensive gear is needed

Not really.....It depends on the sensitivity/efficiency of the speaker..... Speaker power handling is only a guide..... You can ignore that specification..

If the speaker has very good sensitivity (90 db +) , you may not need that much powerful amplifier to fill the room..
