I guess the budget will go over 1 Lakh esp if buying from showroom mine is restricted to 90k if it's really worth it otherwise will stick to 46" Non 3D or 40" LG 3D.

Try the grey market for Samsung. If you're live in Delhi, Gaffar Market is the place to go.

As already updated earlier my location is Hyderabad which doesn't have a grey market. Atleast not which I'm aware of based on whatever I know.
Can someone please provide some more info on this grey market?

Its like the mother of all grey markets! You'll find anything, and I mean anything in consumer products here. From watches to electronics to clothes to f&b, this market does it all. I'll be going there on 25th March, if you want I can get you the price of the models you're interested in buying...

look for sony 46EX720 its price have been cut and should be in ur budget, its amazing TV with decent 3D, and absulutely stunning 2D

if movies are priority , keep tv at 40inch mark ..
grab WXGA projector in 20k, enjoy in DIY 110inch screen costs just 3k

from my experience it is a must have thingy ..

Need to take final call between Sony 46EX720 and Samsung 46D5500.
One more important thing is will Sony Play mkv format?

What about the price for both? I guess you demo these two models and check.

Sony price has been reduced, format readable supported are very few, colors are bit natural compared to samsung.
Samsung will read most of the movie formats from hdd, color is bit artificial.

All the best for your purchase. After buying, don't think about other models :)

sony wont play mkv but if you like the 2D pictures of sony then do for it and get a samsung blu ray player to play mkv or best get a media player which will play almost all formats

keep the TV for best picture viewing experience and not for playing files and choose the one which you like picture and get a player for media support

Sorry guys have a final list one last time
Sony 46EX720 Rs 87,000 from Sony Center
Samsung 46D6000 from Samsung Plaza
or
Samsung 46D5500from Samsung Plaza

I was ok going with the Sony one but I have a doubt whether it will play mkv files which is important since most of the files for HD available on internet will be mkv.If I buy a Blu Ray Player will it support or will it act like a digital player wherein I can connect an external Hard disk or a pen drive with size of files more than 10 GB? I don't want to invest both in a digital player and Blu Ray Player.

Also with the Samsung will be getting a 21" LCD. This doesn't matter that much.

More inclined towards Samsung.

ak47, Do you think 46D6000 is a good one to opt for? I think it's a startup 3D with no 2D to 3D conversion which I don't think is a big deal.

Please let me know. Right now looks like 46D6600 is out of the picture.

For whatever my opinion is worth, you can get extra 2years warranty with the Sony, which is not possible with samsung unless the dealer offers it to you.
Also samsung still has a panel lottery system for its models, including the D6X00 , it may not matter to the common buyer but you might end up with a inferior panel! This is not the case in the sony though, you will definitely get a SPVA panel!

I have read about this panel thing. But not sure what's this all about? What is this lottery system? Is this a real thing to take into consideration?
have u seen the sony and the samsung 2D picture quality side by side ? which one did u like ?
I didn't see the Sony and Samsung Side by side since in most of the stores they are keeping the 3D TV's separately.

Samsung does not put a particular panel in all its tvs like Sony. They just put any random panel that is available!! So one may get a very good panel like a SPVA, which has good viewing angles and so on or one can get a inferior one like a CN or amva ...
It might not matter to the general crowd(Samsung is the largest tv manufacture by sales!)but if you want perfection then it can get annoying!
Just google 'Samsung panel lottery' or check these links

You are going in wrong direction. Checkout LG Lw6500. It is quite comparable to others, 3D is quite good - no headache at all. Lot of 3D content on either Web or ebay. My daughter loves watching 3D movies. The glasses are quite light and you can also get clip-ons for the people who wear corrective glasses.

Also, LG service is quite good in hyderabad and the TV supports wide variety of formats, NTFS formated disks upto 1Tb.

Think twice before not buying this tv.

try croma or e-zone , they keep all of these side by side, without seeing them side by side it will be confusing, I have been this stage while buying my TV
