Hi, I have a similar setup and I get full 1080p/24 resolution on my tv. you need to go to display settings and select 1080p/24Hz. You will see 3 options for the refresh rate : 60/50/24. On my tv only 1080p/24 works, other two dont, so check to see what works. That should fix it.

BTW I used OS X Lion on my imac which I use as a HTPC running plex. Plex plays all media formats and has an awesome feel to it. Try to enable 24fps on your tv, if there is an option available. Remember movies are shot at 24fps, so try to enable that to enjoy true movie watching experience.

cheers

i did check on mac book pro by changing to 24fps but still there is no full picture, there are black side bars. When i change to 720p i see whole picture.
is there any other way to make it 1080p.

You have the mirroring turned ON. In the System Preferences, uncheck the "Mirror Display" checkbox in "Arrangement" tab.
Refer :

Obviously once you disable mirroring, the TV will act as an extended display. You can drag the toolbar in arrangement tab to the display which you want to use as Primary screen.

Wow...dotMac...you are really an apple expert with whole product line in your shelf. It is working for me now.

Also, pls help me in getting 5.1 surround sound. I bought this Moshi mini display port to HDMI port which passes stereo sound but not getting surround sound. Any idea how do I get that ? Any cables available in India ?

TIA

For getting 5.1 Audio, you need Toslink to Laptop's Headphone jack cable. The slot for headphone jack is capable of passing DD or DTS. You can search eBay, there are plenty available below 500Rs.
I think something like this. Please check it on your laptop what kind of port you have.

I am in no way an expert. Its just that I have been using them for quite sometime. And I love them ;)

If your Macbook Pro(MBP) is 2010 or newer model it must just work. Though make sure that you have set HDMI as your audio output device. You can do so by holding down the Option key and click on the Speaker Icon in the top bar of the OS (where you change the volume). It will give you the list of "Output Device" which would be any of the connected audio device such as internal speakers, headphones, HDMI, etc. Make sure to select HDMI in the above list.
Mac might automatically change that settings if you connect a headphone(though it will revert when you unplug your headphone).

Beware that applications like VLC/Plex that are already running may not get the change in which case you can relaunch the respective application.

Just in case you MBP is pre 2010, you will need an optical cable. The headphone/audio-out port in your MBP is actually a dual port. Connect a optical audio(toslink) cable from headphone port in your MBP to you AVR.

As you mentioned about moshi hdmi adapter, I presume you got a newer MBP with DP. So you may not need optical audio cable.

Yes, I own a new macbook pro bgt last week only. I did try to connect by going to system preferences->sound and select output as my Denon AMP. But with this option, i'm not getting surround sound but only stereo.

I will try as you mentioned and check it. Thanks.

5.1 surround is audible when i change the settings in XBMC to 5.1 instead of stereo and audio output as HDMI. But there is a strange issue...when i play the first video on xbmc it works normally but if i close the first video and play second one the audio settings are changing to inbuilt speakers. So every time i change a video on xbmc i had to rechange the audio settings from inbuilt speakers to HDMI in system preferences.

Frankly I am not very sure. But a wild guess. I use Plex(instead of XMBC; Plex, by the way is a Mac specific port of XMBC). So in Plex, I can setup some settings per video and globally. That is, when the video is playing, I can configure video/audio settings that is applied only to that video. So just a wild guess. Did you set the audio settings when you were playing first video? To globally apply a settings, we need to set it in the "Settings" menu in the home screen of Plex/XMBC. Other than that, I dont see a reason why it might switch back(assuming that you have also set the audio out device as HDMI in Mac OS).

Sorry, nothing else I can think off :(

I did search few forums like macrumors etc and surprisingly this was a major issue with lion OS version 10.6.8 and with an update to 10.7.1 this is resolved. Now i can see no issue with audio while changing video playback.

Thanks dotmac, i learned a lot from you and the forum.

Now that you mentioned, it hit me :)
Yes audio out on HDMI/Optical-out both were broken. But still wondering how it worked for the first video though
