On energy absorption - energy dissipation - and Hi-Fi racks

in my current listening room, the balcony is next to a side wall, so it should make only 2-3 ft of extra wire to move it behind a concrete wall. but remote would stop working, have to open the door and say hello to my neighbors to change a cd or record.

Instead can there be closed designs that prevent the direct impact, but also do not turn up to be sound boxes themselves. How about a closed rack with few (or a lot of) ports on side/ rear or bottom to prevent from air being trapped inside.

this will work - 100% guarantee -

Accurion - Workstations

closed racks do work because the material used for enclosing (glass , wood, metal) will resonate-

what will work is isolation from the energy - and quick dissipation of energy

Your posts/sharp vision :) nudged me into doing something about the 3B SST.I managed to find a similar piece of wood of the right size and now the power amp has a 'floor' and it's resting on the supports pads.
And it's like a major upgrade. The sound is substantially, cleaner and crisper.Really:) I'm not imagining this.
Played the delightful Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev.Am now playing Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue by God.Paradise!

great that it worked for you! congrats.

Music in the dark
One of the reasons why music sounds better at night is that outside noises, both the obvious ones, and the ones which are there but our mind sort of shuts out,die down, and in the silence of the night,it is the music which reigns supreme. For the better part of my youth I lived in Simla.Living in Simla and travelling in Himachal obviously meant a lot of walking. While walking at night, especially in the mountains and forests, you realise that sense of hearing improves as your sense of sight declines. At night, you cannot see much in a jungle, but you can hear a lot more.Precisely this revelation got me into the habit of listening to music in the dark. You can hear a lot more, with the lights off.Pitch darkness,if I was in bed,and in a twilight zone between sleep and awake, but usually I left a dim light burning for company.Along with the constant glow of my Wills Navy Cut(stopped smoking 7-8 years back.No urge now.Only repulsion. But in those days smoking and listening to music, went hand in hand).
Even now I first switch on the music, then I turn off the display of my cdp(recommended by most manufacturers),and then I switch off the main lights and switch on a small light behind my listening position. The backlight casts a friendly and amiable glow and the music sounds so much better in the dark.Does it also have something to do with less sound being reflected from the walls, floors and ceiling?

I am not sure if the 'music sounding so much better' has anything to do with the physics of sound in the room. it could however have a lot to do with your emotions. Currently theories of the brain hold that the part of the brain responsible for hearing is located in the cerebrum. the part responsible for emotions are located in the brain stem. a research effort set out to numb the specific part of the brain responsible for 'recognition and critical evaluation' of sounds. a person thus treated when exposed to music did not 'hear' sound and yet his 'mood' was influenced by the music.
the conclusion being that 'for emotional response to music, the sound, or the conscious experience of sound is not relevant'.
of course the aforementioned fact was quoted by a journalist in another context. he wanted to drive home the point that "You cannot tell what your emotional response to a component's sound will be from a description by a critical listener, because the response is independent of the conscious perception of sound'

I guess SINCE you are giving your eye a rest, the brain is concentrating more on the hearing :)

Hi Ajay 124

Its got to do with power. In the night power does get a little cleaner. Also if you switch off everything in your house, refrigerator included, the sound will further improve as compared to just a few lights being switched off. This is because of less emi/rf riding on your system.

Though a lot is yet to be discovered with regarding to functioning of the brain (AFAIK), it does sound unbelievable that music, seemingly nothing but sound, can influence areas of brain that have nothing to do with perceiving of sound.

-brain controls everything -

stimulate one part of the brain - and the part of it that controls copious tears is stimulated.

stimulate the music center and the part that loosens the bowels is stimulated (now you know why audiophiles sit in that "particular" pose - to help break wind)

I feel it has more to do with less external noise as the neighbourhood quiets down at night.Possibly the power angle too.But even the battery operated SB Boom sounds better at night.
I am listening to the same Bach CD I played last night.I would say that the sound quality and consequently my pleasure in listening to the music has declined by at least 20-30%.
Correction! The SB Boom too is running on power.

One of the hundreds of links/nuggets of advise, received by mail, from an encyclopedic audiophile friend :)
[audio physic] - no loss of fine detail
Along with advise that I have recently put into action:
"two potted plants placed in the far, deep, back corners behind the speakers improve air & high frequency dispersion into the room and also help curb bass resonance build-up in the corner...by breaking the standing waves.
"toe-in speakers towards the center to increase depth & reduce width.
"toe-out speakers away from the center to reduce depth and increase width.

hehehe hehe

since it is the 'brain' that has these pretensions/assumptions of studying the 'brain' it is really a no brainer that things cannot be figured out that way...it is like trying to move in a frictionless environment...friction impedes movement but then you cannot move without friction..

and sometimes, a gentle push by god on your broad shoulders will take you where no other human has reached.

i can imagine myself sitting there and "younging" the night away!

You are welcome anytime!
