One Man, Thirty Thousand Records!

Phew!! that's a lot of listening. I would need to be born into royalty to afford to do that :)

On another note, this is nothing but hoarding (or collecting without the intention of listening). I think one of the episodes of Taboo on National Geographic Channel featured Jerry's records for similar reasons :)

Going by the look of the house, I suspect the 30,000 are treated as much as a huge display piece as a source of audio.

Looks rather amazing, and I thought my fathers ~2000 CD collection was out of hand... (It still is)

I am quite satisfied and happy with my collection of just 400 records in many music genres. My collection almost reaches saturation with the titles, really what I want.
Cheers.
sunder.

V a k ranga rao from chennai who also has a collection of 30000 records.........even in india we have good collectors but mostly related to film music...........

When I moved to the US in 98, I loved visiting garage sales, estate sales etc. where you coudl pick up some decent records at bargains. The kind of stuff that would cost an arm and a leg in Bombay, if you even came across them! But what was equally interesting was to see these huge collections that some folks had amassed over a lifetime.
While 3 mill is excessive by any measure, its not uncommon to find "hoarders" like these....especially here in the US. And unfortunately they are just that, hoarders with a problem of letting go versus collectors who are more objective and discerning.

Over the memorial day weekend I had the urge to relive that experience of hunting for records at a garage sale nearby that listed "thousands of records" in their Craig's list post. And boy they were not kidding! The guy had so many records, in his garage, basement and all over his house, that it was impossible for any normal human being to sift thru them in a single day.
Of the 15 or so boxes I went thru, before being overwhelmed and bored, I may have easily come across duplicates of the same albums, many times over! the guy just kept buying them in his 30 plus years of collecting, but probably never listened to it.

Funnily, I walked out with just 2 records after having spent close to an hour there......... And I come home only to realize, I already have those 2 albums, in better shape.
Yuck! I may be turning into a hoarder too :D

While visiting my cousin in Long Island NY. He offered me all of his (over 1000) records in his basement, I did take around 10 (due to weight), next I knew "Sandy" had struck and all his records were under water.

If one is collecting vinyls, good. But listening to 30,000 vinyls ? Good luck trying to find the album you want. Will need "Ramukaka" from hindi films to search the collection.

Ramukaka jara floyd ka DSTM nikalna.

Ramukaka : ha saab, regular wala ki 180gm wala ?

That's very sad. Of course, the records should survive, if not the covers. CDs should, too. Physical media does have its advantages: Hard Disks wouldn't.

Although, there are many much-more-trivial risks, like being left on or close to a source of heat, that vinyl does not survive. I speak from sad and bitter experience!

with just 5000 plus records iam finding it difficult to maintain..........hats off to all who have collection and maintain it...........
